Jonathan Mueke, the Principal Secretary for Livestock, was the guest today on the Maina and King'ang'i morning show, where he shared tips on milk safety for Kenyan consumers.

Mr. Mueke explained that all milk sold in shops is tested by the Kenya Dairy Board at the processor level to ensure its safety.

He assured listeners that the Kenya Dairy Board checks all milk before it is sold to consumers as a precautionary measure for safe milk consumption.

He urged people not to buy milk directly from farmers, as it might contain bacteria and aflatoxin, and instead to buy already processed milk.

"Tafadhali msinunue maziwa kutoka kwa mkulima direct kwa sababu mkulima hana uwezo wa kupima kama maziwa ikona ugonjwa, bacteria na kama ikona kitu inaeza fanya mwananchi akue mgonjwa," he said, stressing that farmers lack the capacity to test for these contaminants, unlike processors and cooperatives who have the necessary testing capabilities.

"The Kenya Dairy Board does enforcements and spot checks," he added.

However, he acknowledged that even processed milk might occasionally escape contamination detection.

To address this, they conduct additional tests in shops. If any milk is found to be faulty, they initiate a recall and traceability process.

This involves tracing the producer, returning the faulty milk, and helping the producer ensure the milk is safe in the future.

Mr. Mueke also mentioned the upcoming Dairy Bill, which aims to ensure the utmost safety of milk for consumers.
