Why #EtanaReturns concert was worth every penny!

All roads led to Nairobi’s Uhuru Gardens on Saturday night where Kenyans turned up in thousands for the Etana returns concert.

Unlike many recent shows in Kenya, the Etana returns concert lived up to the hype which was created from as early as January.

The beautiful, bubbly and energetic Etana returned to a place she calls home and surely did not disappoint her adoring fans.

Young and old, single or taken, Kenyans were not letting the chance to be serenaded by Jamaica’s finest pass them by.

The event kicked off with DJ performances before the talented Gravity band left fans begging for more by the time their time on stage was up.

Wyre the love child, reminded us of the good ‘ol days with Necessary Noiz and at times had to let the fans sing along to his popular jams.

By the time Etana took to stage some minutes past 1am, the crowd was ready to party with the ‘Weakness in me’ hit maker.

Accompanied by her band which was largely made of Kenyan artists, Etana gave an electric performance for close to three hours.

The Grammy awards nominee was left in awe as Kenyans sang along to her songs from the classics to the very latest collections.

It was however a disappointing night for the singles since they had no one to turn to the moment she performed ‘My man’ and ‘Love song’.

At a certain moment, Etana invited a few Kenyans on stage to showcase their dancing abilities and my, she had to take a step back and marvel at the raw talents.

The energy from the crowd was thrilling and no one even walked out after she was done performing at around 3:30.

Super MC Tear gas popularly known as ‘Baba Dede’ kept the crowd on their feet till dawn.

All I can say is that was one of the best concerts I have ever attended.

The money was totally worth it, the set up was crazy and I would do it again if Etana plans to show up again!

All for love: Watch as Wyre renews his vows

Wyre The Love Child, is one of the most celebrated and loved artistes in the 254. His sound is unique and we’ve managed to go with the flow and feel every moment.

Wyre is a very secretive man, who doesn’t mix family business with his music career. Many of us have never even seen his family, while others are often surprised when they learn that he is a husband and a father.

He prefers keeping his private life just that and he’s among the few Kenyan celebrities who are rarely linked to any scandals or controversies.

Wyre has been married to his wife for approximately ten years now. Even when the wedding took place, not many knew he was officially off the market.

Well, Wyre has decided to renew his vows with the love of his life Hanifa. In an invite only ceremony that was held at Lerruat Log Resort in Kajiado County, Wyre made sure that his wife felt as loved as the first day they said ‘I Do’ to each other.

Damian Marley Nails Street Fusion Performance At Carnivore Grounds

Jamaican reggae star Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley stunned fans on Wednesday when he gave one of the most electric performances of the year at the Carnivore Grounds.

The reggae artist seemed to have gotten past Chiko Lawi’s verbal attack that was unleashed on his arrival at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport as he gave the crowd an extraordinary show.

The show kicked off late with our very own rapper Khaligraph Jones who bragged hard about being among curtain-raisers of the reggae legend. He performed tracks such as “Julius Yego,” “Mazishi” and didn’t fail to give a taste of his latest hit “Toa Tint”.

Next on stage was Juacali who was then shortly followed by Jah Lyric backed by The Connection Band.

The final local act to grace the stage was Wyre The Love Child who ensured the throng was hyped and ready for the headlining act.

The 38-year old star headlined the concert with a terrific performance from several of his hits to the admiration of his fans who sang along.

He performed some of his favorite tracks such as “Affairs of the Heart,” “Set Up Shop,” “Road to Zion,” “Patience” and ” “Welcome to Jamrock”.

Damian also paid tribute to his father reggae legend Bob Marley by performing “Could You Be Loved”, “Is This Love” and “No More Trouble”.

He brought the house down and delivered a thrilling performance to match the massive turnout.

Even as he left the stage, partygoers continued chanting his rhythms, showing that they wanted more of his fired-up performance.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Music Icon Suzanne Gachukia Opens Up About Her Marriage To A Diplomat

We all know her as the music icon who dropped some of the euphoric sounds we grew up listening to. The soundtracks of most people’s youth. The Kenyan music industry credits some of it’s success to the hardwork and hustle of Suzanne Gachukia among other industry greats.

Well, she has been on a musical hiatus and that is because she got married a Kenyan diplomat, Richard Opembe, the Kenyan Ambassador to Ireland.

So, how is life as a diplomat’s wife?

“It’s had its challenges. After being a self employed business woman, waking up and not having the studio to go to every morning was – different!” Suzanna told The Star’s Word Is.

Richard Opembe and Suzanna Gachukia

Adding, “In many ways, it has similarities to the entertainment world – you always have to be aware that people are watching you and judging your brand – in this case Kenya – by your behavior.”

Suzanna has a new music project dubbed Zannaziki AllStars VOL I. set to be released on March 28.

She described is as “a retrospective album of songs I’d composed or co- composed/ arranged, sung by other artistes. I actually started it 5 years ago! I thought – this happens all the time in other countries. So why not start that culture here? So that we continue to bring good music to our audiences. I’d also love to do that with the music of other Kenyan composers e.g. Mzee Ngala, Kamaru, the late Habel Kifoto, among others.”

So, what does hubby think about this? Laughing she responded, “Let’s just say – he challenged me to finish this project.”

You have a cushy comfy life, why go back to hectic tour dates, interviews, hustling for air play the whole shebang? “Okay, so women who are married shouldn’t work? I’m not sure how to answer that question…,” Suzanna said.

Suzanna has already released Kondo Gakwa featuring Wyre to rave reviews.

“It’s a children’s game,” she described the single, “I found my auntie Jei teaching it to kindergarten kids where I was teaching music. It caused so much excitement with the kids, I went home and put the chant to music. I couldn’t get the lyrics to work, so I asked my friend, the late David Ohingo, to help me. He re- worked the lyrics to the verses in the original. Wyre also reworked the lyrics in his version. That’s one of the things I love about working with artistes – when they bring their individual flavor to a track.”

This Is The Reason Why Suzanna Gachukia Is Back In The Limelight

The album is full of remakes o popular songs by various artistes. Full of euphoric moments. Asked about this, the music star said, “Interesting you say that because I do want people to feel a sense of “where was I when this came out?” A young girl who interviewed Wyre and I at the video shoot said she remembers her grandmother singing Kondo Gakwa to her! That was priceless! Some of the songs though will feel like they’re new, because the artistes have taken them, and made them, their own. That’s really nice too!”

She concluded, “Hope to see everyone at the launch – we’ll have some great performances. So far confirmed – Hellen Mtawali, June Gachui, Chris Adwar, Abbi, Neema. It’s going to be an all star line up!”

#FlashBackFriday Necessary Noize
