‘Here is why your wife looks older than your mother,’ Akothee reveals

In an era where filters are the in thing, Akothee has advised Kenya men to learn to appreciate their women with all their flaws.

This is because most of the things we see on Instagram are not real. Most people are living by the mantra ‘fake it till you make it’.

Akothee advises,

  1. Never compare your wife with ladies you see on social media, she is the mother of your child! treat her stretchmarks as a beautiful natural tattoo💪, this is a special sacrifice she made, for you to be called a daddy.
  2.  Your wife’s priority is not to glam up on social media, but to make sure every member of the family is secure.
  3. Your wife looks older than the ladies on social media simply because she is living reality and growing grey hair from thinking of what next with your family including the lubbish you 🤔.

4. The money you spend on ladies you meet out there, would have been good money for a family retreat and see your children jump on a bouncing castle 🤔
5. Having excuses of not being home every weekend hurts and cuts deep into a woman’s heart. If wishes were horses, weekends should be cut off your routine🤔

REVEALED: Here is why women make better doctors than men

A leading former brain surgeon has claimed women make better doctors than men because they’re better at communicating.

Dr Henry Marsh, a neurosurgeon before he retired, made the comments at Stratford-upon-Avon Literary Festival.

He said: ‘Although it’s a reverse sexist comment, in my experience and opinion, the average woman makes a better doctor than the average man.’

Dr Marsh admitted he hasn’t always felt this way and, when he began teaching trainees 20 years ago, he was guilty of ‘chauvinism’ himself.

But decades in the field have corrected the error of his thinking, he said.

The medical community has been beset by claims of sexism and the British Medical Association last month announced an investigation into its members.

‘There’s lots of bad woman doctors and lots of good men doctors,’ the 69-year-old said.

‘But given that such an important part of medicine is communication and teamwork, on the whole, it’s a sexist generalisation but women tend to do it a bit better than men.

‘We (male doctors) are all competitive and driven by testosterone.’

Dr Marsh, who now teaches at the Tooting hospital where he once worked, said women in medicine still face sexism but the situation is improving.

‘I can’t stand my husband’s touch in bed’ he turns me off’ Women confess why they fell out of love with their men (Audio)

The reason behind lack of intimacy in marriage seems to be the question on most people’s minds, especially after men claimed that women lose interest after getting babies.

During the morning show on Classic 105, a woman confessed how she no longer finds her husband attractive, saying

“I feel like I have gone off my husband completely, I don’t love him anymore and I do not know why despite the fact that we sleep in the same bed.

I keep asking myself what I saw in him,we are a young couple because I am just 28.We have two kids the youngest is three years and I cant even fathom him touching me.”

‘we share a soul. Something deeper than love, a friendship that words can only spell but not explain’Maribe on her relationship with Dennis Itumbi

Fans were given a chance to contribute to the topic and below are some of their responses.

“Sometimes this women are complicated, unajaribu kupenda na hapendek. It has happened to me I had to divorce. I got married in 2012 we had our first born in 2013.

After  2 years she completely changed to a point that she could even go out when I try talking to her. When I come in to the house she goes out when I go out she comes back.

Even when I tried initiating intimacy she would turn the other way. The problem was that she would not even tell me what the problem is, and hatukukosana.

After two years I told her that I needed another baby but to my surprise she answered back retorting that hata huyo mmoja nimeshindwa kulea.

I could not understand her given the fact that I was working and we never lacked anything. I ended up divorcing her. My marriage was so young.”

Another adds

“Love diminishes mainly because men stop trying to be romantic, you find her there and before she has even had a chance to get aroused you jump on her like a bicycle.

No romance and before she even realizes what is happening you are done, you do the same for a few more days and she reaches a point and starts getting ‘bored’

Nowadays more men are taking alcohol thus the poor performance between the sheets, the solution is to satisfy your woman that way she will be calling you each and everyday.”

Just when you think things can’t get any worse, another fan  disclosed

“Most women don’t get support from their men during pregnancy, the men prefer going and getting a mpango wa kando, most women do not forgive this thus they find comfort in their kids.”

‘I’ve never forgotten the look on her face’: Men confess to times in the past they have assaulted or harassed women

Eight men have candidly shared stories of their past sexual misconduct while expressing regret for their previous behavior towards women.

In September, the same week Christine Blasey Ford publicly accused then Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexually assaulting her as a teenager, the New York Times asked male readers if they ever treated girls or women in ways that they now regret.

In just a few days, the publication received more than 750 responses, ranging from ‘deeply disturbing’ accounts of gang rape to one man who admitted he thought it was ‘funny’ to undo his female classmates’ bras.

The Times made the decision to only publish stories from men who were willing to put their names on their stories, whittling the submissions down to just eight.

‘As much as I want to see this conversation move our country forward, I cannot lose my employment. I cannot lose my reputation,’ one man said of his refusal to go public with his confession.

A majority of the men who agreed to go on record and share their stories were either of retirement age or close to it, including one person who is nearly 82 years old.

I knew that what I was doing was wrong, but I didn’t realize how wrong it was until I saw the young woman’s reaction

Some of the men admitted that they felt their behavior was normal for the time, even though they knew it was wrong. Others said they didn’t realize the scope of what they had done until they were older.

In his essay, Gene Biringer revealed that he and his friends were taking part in a friendly wrestling match when he made the ‘instantaneous calculation’ to grope the breast of a girl he had a crush on.

He admitted that his 16-year-old self thought: ‘Maybe I can get away with this.’

Although he is unaware if the girl knew it was him, he said he immediately felt ashamed when he saw her walk away from the group, ‘clearly upset.’

Here’s A List Of Things That A Good Man Will Never Do

The beauty about being in a relationship is that you get to share things with your partner. While that is great you also need to remember that someone should be with you and accept you for who you are.

You don’t need to be with someone who will make you feel less of a person. There are people who are blessed with words but always remember that words can’t do anything if actions don’t match.

If you are dating a good man here is a list of things that he will not  do to you, and if he does then he’s not a good man.

1. Never pick on your looks You may not be Heidi Klum, Halle Berry etc but a good man will never pick on your looks or ask you to wear make up or dress in a certain way. A good man will never demean you or make you feel any less of a person. Your self esteem is important to him as it is to you.

2. Invade your privacy – In a healthy relationship, there is no need to hide anything. Texts, emails, facebook messages, whatever. But that doesn’t mean your partner has the right to snoop through them if you happen to leave your phone around or your computer open. (Unless you have done something suspicious) Someone who does this is showing massive insecurity on their part and is likely projecting their own infidelities and issues onto you. This should not be ignored.

3. Never discourage you – A sign of a person’s confidence in themselves is how they help to support the ambition of others. A good man will always be willing to help and support those around him and will never be discouraging or insulting.

4. Recognize your value – If you have to constantly prove your worth to someone then they are not worth the time. You should be with someone because they value and appreciate who you are not how well you trace yourself for them.

5. Make you feel like an afterthought – While a relationship shouldn’t be someone’s entire life, it’s certainly a large part of it. I’ve heard too many stories about women who constantly get cast aside for “guy’s night” or something similar. A man should have have a network and individuality, sure. But there is a difference between leading an active social life, and knocking the woman in your life further and further down your priority list. If you feel like you’re waiting for him to come home more than you’re actually with him, it’s time to step back and take another look at where your relationship is going.

Iranian women were allowed into Azadi stadium in Tehran, first time since 1981 on Wednesday.

Iranian women were allowed into the national stadium in Tehran for the first time in 37 years on Wednesday night.

They were part of a crowd of thousands that packed into the Azadi stadium to watch Iran take on former World Cup winners Spain on huge television screens.

Police initially barred women from entering, saying they did not have the ‘infrastructure’ in place to deal with such an event, before the country’s interior minister intervened.

A correspondent, said that many women had already gone home or failed to turn up because of police hostility, but some did make it inside for the historic night.

Also according to Daily Mail, the news was initially reported by Open Stadiums, which describes itself as: ‘A movement of Iranian Women seeking to end discrimination.’

In addiction the twitter account of Iran’s national team even shared an image of the historic moment.

The issue has become increasingly hot in recent years, with female protesters dressing up as men in order to sneak themselves inside the stadium.

Thousands also flocked to watch Iran play in Russia, knowing the Moscow authorities would not stop them, while those back home complained of the ban.

irania

Women were last allowed inside the stadium on October 5, 1981, to watch the Tehran derby before being banned as part of sweeping reforms that took place in the wake of the Iranian revolution.

The revolution saw the pro-Western but largely corrupt monarchy ousted in favour of an Islamist government that immediately declared the country an Islamic republic.

Rights previously granted to women were abolished, conservative forms of Islamic dress enforced, and religious brigades dispatched to patrol the streets to enforce the new order.

However, Iran has been undergoing change in recent years, with women allowed back into stadium to watch some – but not all – sports.

If February this year, women were admitted to watch a basketball match at the Azadi sports complex, though not inside the main stadium itself.

Women will be allowed to drive for the first time in the Arab kingdom from this month, while they have already been allowed into cinemas and sports stadiums.

Women who wake up early are less likely to get depressed than late risers, claim scientists

Women who wake up early as they get older are less likely to develop depression than those who love a lie-in, according to research.

Scientists say exposure to daylight affects a person’s risk of becoming depressed, and women who wake up early have a 12 to 27 per cent lower chance.

A study of more than 32,000 women with an average age of 55 found those who describe themselves as evening or intermediate types are more likely to end up with the mental illness.

It is not a curse, however, and the scientists say people who like to sleep late can help reduce their risk by getting up earlier and seeing more daylight.

The research also found night owls are less likely to be married and more likely to live alone, be smokers, and have erratic sleep patterns – all of which could increase depression risk.

But the link between sleeping preference and depression still remains even when those factors are accounted for.

The research was done by scientists at the University of Colorado Boulder, and Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.

It is the largest ever study of its kind and studied the effect of a woman’s chronotype – what times a person prefers to sleep and wake up – on her risk of depression.

Researchers claim chronotype affects depression risk even when exposure to daylight and working schedules are taken out of the equation.

Depression thought to affect one in ten people

‘There might be an effect of chronotype on depression risk that is not driven by environmental and lifestyle factors,’ said lead study author and director of the university’s sleep lab, Céline Vetter.

Depression is a fairly common mental health problem which can affect anyone at any age.

Around one in ten people are thought to experience it at some point in their life, and it can cause people to feel upset and to lose interest in things they used to enjoy.

What is depression?

While it is normal to feel down from time to time, people with depression may feel persistently unhappy for weeks or months on end.

Depression can affect anyone at any age and is fairly common – approximately one in ten people are likely to experience at some point in their life.

Depression is a genuine health condition which people cannot just ignore or ‘snap out of it’.

Symptoms and effects vary, but can include constantly feeling upset or hopeless, or losing interest in things you used to enjoy.

It can also cause physical symptoms such as problems sleeping, tiredness, having a low appetite or sex drive, and even feeling physical pain.

In extreme cases it can lead to suicidal thoughts.

Traumatic events can trigger it, and people with a family history may be more at risk.

It is important to see a doctor if you think you or someone you know has depression, as it can be managed with lifestyle changes, therapy or medication.

Are You Attracted To Smoke? Study Reveals Most women Find Smokers Unattractive

Women are more likely to find smoking unattractive than men are, a new survey has found.

Around 56 percent of women said they would not date someone who smokes with nearly 70 percent saying they find it unattractive.

There was a lesser degree of unwillingness to date someone who vapes, often marketed as a ‘risk-free’ alternative to traditional cigarettes.

Among the participants, 46 percent of women said they would not date a vaper with about 55 percent saying it was unattractive.

The survey, conducted by Inogen, a supplemental oxygen company, looked at 1,006 single people between the ages of 18 and 76.

The participants were then asked if they were nonsmokers (57 percent), smokers (24.3 percent) or vapers (18.7 percent).

They were asked questions about if they would date someone who smokes, if they would date someone who vapes, and if either of those traits made someone more or less attractive.

Overall, 69.6 percent of women said they found that smoking made someone less attractive while only 55.1 percent said they found vaping to be unattractive.

Perhaps it is for these reasons why smokers are less likely to be upfront about their habit on online dating platforms. About 44 percent of men and 42 percent of women responded that they don’t include that detail on their profiles.

When asked what features of smoking and vaping turned people away, some contrasts appeared in the complaints about each habit.

Ninety-one percent of people said they wouldn’t date a smoker because of the smell compared to 53 percent who said they wouldn’t date a vaper due to the odor of vape ‘clouds’.

Study Shows Long-term antibiotics increase women’s risk of death by 27%

Antibiotics increase women’s risk of an early death from heart disease by inflicting irreparable damage on their gut lining, new research warns.

Those who are prescribed a dose that spans two months or more are 58 percent more likely to succumb to terminal heart issues, the study found.

In fact, their risk of premature death from all causes bumps up 27 percent.

The findings come a month after the FDA warned people against a particularly common antibiotic sold under the brand name Biaxin – which is used to treat many skin, ear, sinus and lung infections – for its link to potentially fatal heart issues.

The study is one of the first to quantify how much antibiotics affect the gut lining and heart health.

While previous studies have found antibiotic use is associated with long-lasting changes to gut microbiota, no study had examined how significant this damage would be for relatively healthy people.

‘Gut microbiota alterations have been associated with a variety of life-threatening disorders, such as cardiovascular diseases and certain types of cancer,’ said lead author Dr Lu Qi, professor of epidemiology at Tulane University.

‘Antibiotic exposure affects balance and composition of the gut microbiome, even after one stops taking antibiotics.

‘So, it is important to better understand how taking antibiotics might impact risks for chronic diseases and death.’

In a collaborative study with Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, Qi led a team studying 37,510 women over the age of 60 who did not have heart disease or cancer at the start of the program, which spanned from 2004 until summer 2012.

Assessing each woman’s antibiotic use, they put them into four groups – not at all; fewer than 15 days; between 15 days and two months; or two or more months.

By the end, they found a clear correlation between antibiotic use and premature death risk, particularly if the course was longer.

This was true even after accounting for other factors such as diet, obesity, other medications and lifestyle.

The women who took antibiotics for two months or longer were 27 percent more likely to die from any cause, except cancer, than those who took no antibiotics at all.

In particular, a prescription for longer than two months increased risk of death from heart disease by 58 percent.

Death risk was higher still if these women had a history of antibiotic use in their middle age too.

‘Although we observed a notable association between long-term antibiotic use and risk of death, it isn’t yet clear whether long-term antibiotic use is the specific cause of the association,’ Dr Qi said.

‘For example, women who reported antibiotic use might be sicker in other unmeasured ways.

‘These results, however, contribute to a better understanding of risk factors for all-cause and cardiovascular death.

‘We now have good evidence that people who take antibiotics for long periods during adulthood may be a high-risk group to target for risk-factor modification to prevent heart disease and death.’

Why women should lie to their partners about their bank balance

Everyone is guilty of telling the odd white lie now and again, but when it comes to relationships which should be built on trust, is it ever acceptable to lie to your partner?

According to London-based psychologist and novelist Hélene Fermont even in the healthiest relationships, there are some things that you other half just doesn’t need to know about.

And the writer, who explores themes of lying in her latest novel, insists that every woman should make a point of having her own bank account – and not disclosing the balance to her partner.

‘Not being financially independent leaves you in danger of feeling trapped with someone that’s not right for you,’ she told FEMAIL. ‘Lying to protect your own freedom and safety when necessary is acceptable.

‘It’s not necessary to reveal the exact amount in the account. As long as both parties know the other is financially independent and they are honest about the important things, having funds to yourself is not an issue.

‘Even the most well-meaning and healthy relationships can fall apart, and it is important to have that ‘rainy day’ fund just in case it comes to an end. And if you don’t end up using it – at least you can feel proud that you’re not dependent on someone else.’

Helen added:  ‘Having your own financial independence and not depending on someone for a roof over your head is fundamental to being in a healthy and loving relationship. For a balanced relationship, both parties should contribute towards bills and expenditure.’

However, she added that if your partner finding out about your bank balance is an overwhelming worry, you might want to question whether or not it’s really a healthy relationship.

Another lie Helene says it’s acceptable to tell without fundamentally putting your partnership at risk is anything to do with past relationships.

THE UPS AND DOWNS OF LYING

· A few white lies here and there are usually innocent

· You are not obligated to reveal everything to your partner

· But repeated lying can lead to relationship breakdown

· Lying frequently snowballs into more lying

· Why do you feel the need to lie? Feeling you need to keep secrets can be a warning sign of a controlling or abusive relationship

‘When you first begin dating someone, and you are still getting to know the person – you are not obligated to disclose all information from your past relationships and the reasons they didn’t work out,’ she explained.

‘These reasons can often be very personal and you should never feel obligated to tell all. Sometimes the past is better left in the past.’

Another instance where it’s fine to tell a white lie is when someone asks for your opinion on their appearance or needs reassurance.

‘We are all guilty of paying someone we love a compliment that we don’t mean, saying something looks nice when it doesn’t, or laughing at a joke we don’t find funny. This is often because we don’t want to hurt their feelings,’ she said.

‘These small lies are generally harmless, especially when they are well meant. It is when people deliberately lie about fundamental issues that the foundations begin to crack.’

While telling a few white lies now and again may not have any dangerous impact, there can be consequences.

‘There are a few instances where it might be necessary to keep things from your loved ones – for your own health and safety – but this doesn’t come without risks,’ she explained.

‘The danger of lying is that it can frequently lead to more lying. You are stuck with an added pressure of keeping up with the lie to save yourself from being found out. It becomes a vicious cycle and cause a relationship to breakdown.

‘Consistent lying can be very destructive to both parties.’

Hélene Fermont’s new novel explores the theme of lying in relationships. His Guilty Secret is out now, available from Amazon, priced £9.99 in paperback and £3.99 as an e-book. For more information see helenefermont.com

Women who miscarry ‘more likely to conceive second time’

Women who experience a miscarriage during their first round of IVF are more likely to have a baby with further treatment than those who did not become pregnant, a study shows.

Experts said the findings could offer hope to couples considering whether to continue treatment after the devastating loss of an unborn child.

Around 1.5 per cent of babies born in Britain each year are conceived through IVF. More than 52,000 women had the treatment in 2014.

Although 27 per cent of IVF pregnancies result in a live birth, 22 per cent end in miscarriage.

But the latest study, by Aberdeen University, found the odds of having a live birth were 39 per cent higher in women who miscarried in their first round of IVF than those who did not conceive at all.

Study author Natalie Cameron said: ‘Miscarriage can be a devastating experience for any couple, but especially for those who have already struggled with infertility.

‘This, coupled with the emotional and financial burden of multiple cycles of treatment, can make many couples give up. We hope our findings will provide reassurance to these couples as they consider their options for continuing treatment.’

Researchers examined the records of more than 112,000 women who started IVF over a ten-year period from 1999.

The records, which are held by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority, showed 112,549 women had IVF, of which 62.3 per cent did not get pregnant, 8.3 per cent conceived but miscarried and 29.5 per cent had a live birth.

The researchers found that after a second round of treatment, 31.7 per cent of women who miscarried in the first round had a live baby, compared to 22.8 per cent of women who had not got pregnant in the first round.

When couples had three rounds of treatment, 40.9 per cent of women who had originally had a miscarriage had a baby, compared to 30.1 per cent of those who had not conceived first time.

Women who had a live baby through their first round of IVF were much more likely than other women to have another through subsequent rounds, with nearly half having a second baby within two more cycles.

Dr David McLernon, another author of the study, which is published today in the journal Human Reproduction, said it was possible miscarriage helped prepare the body for future pregnancies.

He said: ‘Miscarriage shows couples they can get pregnant, that an embryo will implant in the womb. If you keep trying you are more likely to succeed.’ He said the findings showed three cycles appeared to be the ‘optimum’ number to maximise the chances of having a baby.

Women live longer than men and here’s why

Assuming there’s such a thing as a battle of the sexes, then women have won it hands down by the time they get to 100.

In almost every country, most centenarians are female. On average, they outnumber men by four or five to one.

Males may be stronger. They may be taller. They may be better at hand-to-hand combat, more likely to earn better wages and are far more numerous in the boardroom. But when all is said and done, they do appear to be the weaker sex.

So why do so few of them make a century? And what have women got — beyond the obvious — that leaves the male sex trailing in their wake? There’s no single answer, of course, but there are many surprising reasons why.

A man¿s risk of dying was six times higher than normal in the year following the death of a spouse or partner, according to investigators at London¿s Cass Business School

Three decades ago, the view was that men’s lifestyle was to blame. Young men took more risks on the road, did more dangerous jobs, got into more fights, and were more likely to go to war. This could lead to life-shortening trauma or death.

Also, men smoked and drank more and subsequently built up health problems that killed them in greater numbers after their mid-50s. But were these the only reasons that women began to outnumber men really significantly around retirement age?

In the Eighties, British physician and geneticist Sir Cyril Clarke suggested another theory: once men start drawing their pensions, they tend to adopt an unhealthy lifestyle.

They run to fat because they start sitting around, watching TV and eating too much. And they’re not only less active physically but also mentally.

Meanwhile, most retired women carry on much as usual: cleaning the house, going shopping, cooking, doing the dishes and the weekly washing. There’s no real retirement for them — but keeping active helps them live longer.

But, unfortunately for men, there seemed to be far more to it than that. In the three decades since Sir Cyril’s findings, scientists have discovered that boys have an uphill struggle right from birth. They’re 14 per cent more likely to be born prematurely than girls, and twice as likely to suffer immature lung development.

By the time they reach their mid-teens, a ¿testosterone storm¿ takes control, as hormone levels peak. This, says longevity researcher Tom Perls, ¿can induce some pretty dangerous behaviour among young men.' (File photo)

They’re also more prone to perinatal brain damage, cerebral palsy and congenital deformities.

In addition, girls develop faster in the womb, so a newborn girl can be the physiological equivalent of a four to six-week-old boy. Later, they walk and talk before boys.

It gets worse. Boys are about 25 per cent more likely to die in the first year of life. Even if they survive, they’re three to four times more at risk than girls of finding their development hindered by hyperactivity, autism, Tourette’s syndrome, stammering or being slow at picking up reading.

At least there’s one area in which boys are ahead: they’re much quicker to expose themselves to danger.

By the time they reach their mid-teens, a ‘testosterone storm’ takes control, as hormone levels peak. This, says longevity researcher Tom Perls, ‘can induce some pretty dangerous behaviour among young men. They don’t wear their seatbelts; they drink too much alcohol; they can be aggressive with weapons and so on.’

But there may be another reason for this volatile behaviour. Some scientists put it down to slower development of the frontal lobes of the male brain, which deal with responsibility and evaluating risk.

Men are also three times more likely to take illegal drugs than women, according to official figures for England and Wales. Plus they’re three times more likely to kill themselves; between 2001 and 2011, more than 38,600 males over the age of 15 committed suicide.

The upshot of all this is that, between the ages of 15 and 30, the death rate for males is more than twice that of females. So, by age 30, women are already starting to outnumber men.

That trend continues throughout the rest of their lives, with fewer women than men dying at almost all ages.

The workplace is more dangerous for men. From 2013–14, 20 times as many men as women were killed at work. Men also tend to get exposed more to hazardous substances that can damage their long-term health. But it’s from the age of 55 or 60 that the gap starts to widen.

That’s when the unhealthy lifestyle of some men starts to take its toll, particularly through heart disease and strokes.

While these killers claim men in significant numbers in their 50s and 60s, women don’t usually fall victim for at least another ten years. Yet, if something’s worrying her, a woman is more likely to go to a doctor than a man and get the condition treated.

Dr Marianne Legato, director of America’s Foundation for Gender-specific Medicine, says: ‘Men often deny illness. They minimise symptoms because they don’t want to go to a doctor and find out something is wrong.’

Women are not only more pragmatic, but they often nurse and support each other when they’re ill — looking after other women’s children, laughing and crying together, and boosting each other’s confidence. So they’re much more social in the way they cope with stress or things going wrong in their lives.

Men, on the other hand, are more likely to have a ‘fight or flight’ mentality — reacting to problems with aggression or withdrawal, both of which can negatively affect their health. This difference alone, say scientists, is a significant part of the reason why women generally live longer than men — and are more likely to become centenarians.

Other researchers looked again at the male sex hormone testosterone — this time in older men. And they realised that it increased levels of harmful cholesterol and raised the risk of heart disease or stroke.

By contrast, the female hormone oestrogen lowers harmful cholesterol and raises ‘good’ cholesterol levels.

Evidence is also emerging to suggest that male immune systems are weaker. The inflammation that raises our temperature when we’re unwell is the body’s first line of defence against infection, because heat can often kill off the invading agent. But humans carry an enzyme that can block the inflammation process.

Experiments on mice seemed to show that the female sex hormone oestrogen prevents this enzyme from interfering with inflammation. Hence females have a more powerful inflammatory response — which means they have a stronger immune system.

And that’s not all. Research in Tokyo found that ‘T-cells’ — which protect us from infection — decline faster in men than in women. Two other types of cell in the body’s defence armoury become more numerous as we get older — but the increase is bigger in women.

Japanese scientists concluded that these findings were ‘consistent with the fact that women live longer than men’.

In the UK, researchers at Imperial College of Medicine came to a similar conclusion. Moreover, they discovered that from 1993-1998, more men than women died from influenza and pneumonia.

The bad news for men kept coming: an American study of 12,000 men and women revealed that the more muscular men were, and the more sexual partners they’d had, the weaker their immune systems tended to be.

However, women have a slower metabolism than men, and scientists became convinced that this extended their lifespan. Even women’s monthly periods seemed to confer an advantage.
