William Ruto and his wife have one of the most fascinating relationships among the political elite, only comparable to that of the Raila’s and the Uhuru’s.
As with many leaders, mythos and legend surround the courtship process among these people that many adore and respect.
The deputy president, William and his wife have been married for close to 30 years with Ruto marrying Rachel Chebet in 1991.
Their romance didn’t start on solid ground as Rachel wasn’t so sure that William was the right man.
In a 2014 interview on Woman Without Limits, Rachel told Kathy Kiuna that she knew DP William Ruto from when they were children – but she wasn’t romantically involved with him until they got to campus.
I would see him in the youth camps and he was active in the youth choir and in acting in the church as well.
Rachel disclosed that it was when she joined campus that she started dating Ruto. The DP was then studying at the University of Nairobi as she pursued her teaching practice in Eldoret. While praying for a husband she received the two name-William Ruto from God.
The next after the divine revelation her future husband travelled to Eldoret with the intention of getting her to marry him. She told Kathy,
He didn’t beat around the bush. He asked me the question.
But she still didn’t acquiesce to Ruto’s proposal despite the revelation. She told Kathy that she still needed to pray more about it,
As much as in the previous night, God had assured me of the man I was going to marry, I told him (Ruto) ‘I’ll pray about it and get back to you’. I did want to show him that I was just waiting.
Immediately she finished her teaching practice, she went to Nairobi and told Ruto that she was ready for marriage. She concluded,
We got married immediately after graduation at 23 years and we have six children.
