Young Kenyan creatives who are doing the most

Apart from the regular school routine, this is what young Kenyan creatives are doing to survive this harsh economic times. Times are hard leading but these youth have been able to incorporate their talent in contributing to the societies creative industry.

Some of this young creatives include,

 

1. Clint Malik and Moh mckenzie

Clint Malik and Moh McKenzie began their first style collective in Jericho Estate, a working class neighborhood in the Eastlands surbub of Nairobi. They are a group of neighborhood boys with a shared love of fashion.

Earlier this year with the help of their photographer friend Brenon Ochieng Ooro, they started incorporating everyday objects, little relics found around their suburb, into their street style photos on Instagram. Clothespins hang from thrifted trench coat pockets and broken mirror shards are fastened to sunglasses with string. Tailor’s measuring tape and playing cards are safety-pinned onto everything from traditional Kenyan robes to hand-painted jeans and captioned #MadeInKenya.

Malik says,

“We use objects related to our culture, like matchsticks, brooms, and handmade handbags,”

2. Shem Obara

He is an enthusiastic self taught Photographer who has gradually been gaining recognition in the creative industry. He is known for his portraits, creative concepts and editorial images, which have caught the eye of many people through social media. The artistic mind has also captured the attention of some Kenyan celebrities with whom he has worked with. They include, Muthoni Drummer Queen, Kagwe Mungai, Blinky Bill, Antoneosol, Joan Munyi (Yummy mummy) among others.

3. Jebet Navaa

Self-taught artist Jebet Naava effortlessly creates candid, thought-provoking and transcendent art. She is inspired by Nairobi’s vibrant creative scene and by elements of the human condition. Naava is determined to push Africa forward and claim her narrative. As a mother who has battled depression, her work tenderly centers on mental health, self-love, the celebration of the woman and the resilience of humanity. She was the artist behind Blinky Bill’s album cover Mayonde’s ProjectPurple EP.

4. Wabosha Maxine

Maxine Wabosha is a Kenyan makeup and beauty artist who is carving a niche as an “eyebrow” expert. From getting spotted by brands, to working with amazing personalities, Maxine keeps on shining. Her services and YouTube channel, which all go by the name ‘Beauty by Wabosha’, have resonated with a lot of Kenyan youngsters and all who love the art of transformation.

5. Vallerie muthoni

Vallerie Muthoni is a recording and performing artist based in Nairobi, Kenya, currently studying a diploma in Music Production. With roots from her childhood in the USA, her music entails a different assortment of sound. From old-school funk and groove to the modern day RnB & Soul, her sound cannot be put into a box. Also being quite the entertainer from a young age, her live performances are experiences, from the story telling in her lyrics to her relation with the audience incorporating dance, dialogue, prose and energy through it all.

She is also a girl of many traits, she has her own YouTube channel with content varying from Comedy, Music to even Poetry. You can also occasionally find her MC/ hosting events around town. She was recently one of the main performing acts at the Thrift Social-Athleisure edition
