Kenyan TV stations risk loosing digital signals over self-switch off

The African Digital Network consortium risks losing broadcast signal distribution licences for going off air Saturday, ICT Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has said.

Addressing a media briefing Sunday afternoon Mating’i said the decision by Citizen TV, KTN, NTV and QTV to go off air amounts to blackmail and contempt of a court order.

Matiang’i further said that an advert posted by the consortium explaining the reasons for being off air are untrue.
“The three media houses opted to screen inaccurate and misleading messages in an effort to incite the public. Both switching themselves off the digital transmission and screening inaccurate messages is illegal and a breach of their licences,” Matiang’i said.

The Supreme Court on Friday ordered CA to restore digital frequencies to ADN that had been withdrawn following a breach of the terms of the permits. The five-judge bench of justices Kalpana Rawal, Philip Tunoi, Jackton Ojwang, Mohammed Ibrahim and Njoki Ndung’u however gave CAK the authority to switch off analogue broadcast when it saw fit.

Matiang’i said the government will not revert to analogue broadcast and told ADN that they should operate within the law.
“The three media houses like all of us are in Kenya and not above the law. We expect responsibility on their part. We will not go back on digital migration,” Matiang’i said.

This latest incident is the second time the ADN consortium is being put to task over information circulated to the public concerning the status of the digital migration.

ADN was accused of engaging in anti-competitive behaviour when they ran an advert warning viewers not to buy set-top boxes from GoTV and Star Times to access their content. Matiang’i said Kenyans are the beneficiaries of digital migration which will not be hampered by ADN.

CA to repossess all analogue frequencies by midnight

Television viewers in Nairobi and major urban centres have been given up to midnight to acquire set top boxes or be switched off. Communications Authority of Kenya said on Friday that phase one and phase two recipients will be switched off at midnight.

Phase one of the switch off was in Nairobi and environs which took place on December 31,2014, while phase two that covers Mombasa and its environs was to be switched off on February 2,2015. CA asked all media houses to migrate to the digital platform since they were set to repossess all analogue frequencies.

The Authority warned media houses that will not comply with the directive that they will be switched off forcefully. The CA officials were addressing the media on Friday in Nairobi.

The Supreme Court ordered that Citizen TV, NTV and KTN’s digital broadcasting licenses be restored. The court issued a directive for analogue and digital TV platforms to run concurrently.

TV of the future may be a sphere

The TV of the future may not be a rectangle, but a sphere.

Some visitors to the 2015 Consumer Electronics Show got a peek at this new way to view 360-degree video.

The new viewing experience was shown as part of a collaboration among several partners including French video software firm and Ateme, British-based Pufferfish Displays, which makes the spherical projection module.

Although 360-degree video can be viewed on a standard television of tablet, the spherical module adds a new dimension, said Mike Antonovich, the Ateme general manager for the Americas.

This “can augment the experience of viewing a live concert or sporting event,” Antonovich said.

Using the sphere makes the viewing an interactive and collaborative experience, said Geoff Kell of Pufferfish.

“It will be an addition to the viewing experience, but it also has great value as a data visualization tool” for research or other purposes, Kell said.

Ateme and its partners recently produced the first live 360-degree broadcasts using the trademark LiveSphere.

“You can view from different angles, so if you are watching a concert you might want to be part of the audience, and then switch to be part of the band,” Antonovich said.

While 360-degree imaging has been around for several years in services such as Google Maps, Ateme it is far more challenging to produce this for live television.

“This is completely different to do 360 degrees for live TV, and making it seamless,” said Ateme research manager Jerome Vieron.

Other partners in LiveSphere include the Finnish technology group Finwe and France-based Kolor, which specializes in “image-stitching.”

Supreme court suspends digital migration

Your TV set will not be switched off today, 31st December 2014 which was the date set for the switch off in Nairobi and it’s environs. The rest of the country was targeted for switch off by end of March ahead of the global deadline of June 30.

This is after the Supreme Court issued temporary orders Tuesday stopping analog switch off. Deputy Chief Justice Kalpana Rawal issued the orders, and directed that parties in the case appear in court on Monday for further directions.

TV naturalist eaten alive by anaconda lives to tell the tale

The Amazon boasts the world’s greatest variety of wildlife, but no one had ever seen anything quite like this.

Gliding through the dense, waterlogged vegetation was a 20ft long, 18 ½ st green anaconda — one of the world’s most terrifying creatures.

Moving tentatively towards it was a man on his hands and knees pretending to be a wild boar — clad head to toe in a black armoured suit slathered in pig’s blood.

Paul Rosolie was on a terrifying mission: to be eaten alive by the biggest and mightiest snake on Earth.

The 27-year-old wildlife presenter and his ten-strong team had spent 60 days struggling up to the headwaters of the world’s largest river, battling electric eels, floods and poachers.

Finally, they’d found a snake that might be big enough to swallow Rosolie whole as the cameras rolled.

Tomorrow night in America, the Discovery Channel will broadcast the result of his experiment in its show Eaten Alive, despite protests from conservationists on both sides of the Atlantic. The documentary — to be aired in the UK on Friday — will follow his stomach-churning quest into the very belly of the beast.

The channel has refused to say exactly what ensued after the snake wrapped Rosolie in its coils. But he has explained what drove him to such extremes of apparent lunacy — and told of his fear as he realised the snake had accepted his invitation to subject him to one of the natural world’s most lingering deaths.

‘I wanted to do something to grab people’s attention to the plight of the disappearing rainforests, something completely crazy,’ he told me this week. ‘Everything else has been tried.’ Whether his

Bollywood star Veena Malik has been sentenced to 26 years in prison for taking part in a ‘blasphemous’ TV programme.

The offending programme was shown several months ago and involved the couple reenacting their wedding to the tune of a “contemptuous” qawwali, a traditional form of South Asian music.
