4 legit reasons why it’s time to ditch the suit

Suits, for a long time, have been made the epitome of sleekness. You have to show up in one during a job interview and any event labelled as official. Do you think suits are overrated in this era of keeping it your own way? That’s a thought to ponder on.

From Jeff Mwangemi to John Karani: Maina Kageni pays homage to golden oldies of radio

Here are reasons why you should reconsider your choice of putting on a suit:

1. Cultural betrayal

Remember when people wore hides? When wearing a hide skin marked authority. When did that change? To be honest we can’t go back to wearing such but we can take up the new African attire. Official suits is a western idea sold to us. Thankfully our honorable president created “Utamaduni day” with an aim for people to celebrate their different cultures and our attire is one of the marks of culture.

2. False impression

Not unless you’re the type that seeks attention, drop that suit! People having a wrong impression about you based on how you dress can be depressing. Suits have a way of making people think you have good money and it ain’t odd when you hear people calling you “mheshimiwa” whenever you rock a good suit.

3. Wrong suit

Most men have issues with picking the right suit. It’s either oversize or wrong color. You don’t want to look like a clown walking through the street. Ditch that suit and find something else to put on. It takes someone who knows how to blend colors to get it right which proves to be a daunting task for most men.

4. Looks boring

bored man

Sometimes a suit looks boring. With most people using it as a mark of officialism, suits tend to feel like a uptight affair. Suits can create a wrong facade about a person. With most men own a few number of suits, it can be boring rotating around the limited choice one has.

BABA WA TAIFA! Check Out Rare Pics Of Mzee Jomo Kenyatta From Back In The Day [PHOTOS]

It is interesting to note that founding father Jomo Kenyatta never knew the exact year of his birth—only that he was born sometime in the 1890s.

While many of us were nowhere near being born by the time of his death, it is always good to take a trip down memory lane whether or not we were around. Can you even try to imagine the world that existed before we were birthed?

From Kenya to the UK, these pics portray a part of the life of a Kenyan legend. It is even said that sometimes, he would walk around the streets of London wearing a leopard skin and carrying a spear to demonstrate he was an authentic representative of those who had sent him before changing into a Western suit for meetings with journalists and sympathetic intellectuals.

Are Sauti Sol The Most Stylish Kenyan Celebrities? (Photos)

We all know the Kenyan pop group Sauti Sol for their good music but their amazing fashion sense that has been evolving over the years is something to take note. Their love for Ankara vintage designs can almost be described as their signature look because it is always present in their outfits. Sauti Sol are fashion conscious and can be described as one of the most stylish celebrities in Kenya.

When they were once asked to describe their style by celebrity red carpet UK Chimano, one of the band members said that their style is, “African avant-garde. Making stuff that looks weird in a good way. We want to look edgy. People expect Africans to look a certain way– showing up in a grass skirt. We wanna look funky and modern with an African touch.”

That interview was back in 2012 but Sauti Sol have still managed to maintain their look. Sauti Sol members are one of the few Kenyan celebrities especially in music who invest in their image. They will have a completely modern outfit but with a hint of African in it. Or they will be found wearing blazers with a hint of African print on red carpet, accessorizing with Maasai jewellery etc.

Anxiously waiting to see what they will wear on the red carpet at the MTV Mamas 2015 on July 18th. In the meantime check out the photos below

Cannes Film Festival ‘turns away women in flat shoes’

Cannes Film Festival has come under fire after reports women were turned away from a red carpet screening for wearing flat shoes instead of heels. The women – some of whom were said to be older with medical conditions – were attending the world premiere of Cate Blanchett’s new film Carol.

Screen Daily said the festival had confirmed heels were obligatory for women at red carpet screenings. However the director of the festival said the “rumors” were “unfounded”.

Thierry Fremaux tweeted: “For the stairs, the regulations have not changed: ‘No smoking, formal wear’. There is no mention of heels.” A note about dress codes on the festival’s website appears to reinforce his point. It says “black tie /evening dress is required for gala screenings” – with no guidance on heel height.

Screen Daily first reported the story, after a “Cannes regular” told them how a woman wearing Rhinestone-encrusted flat shoes was denied entry. The unnamed source said: “Someone I know was turned away for wearing nice flats, nothing you would wear to the beach. They were in their 50’s. They told her she could go and buy appropriate shoes and come back.”

Asif Kapadia, whose Amy Winehouse documentary screened at the festival last weekend, also tweeted that his wife had been challenged over wearing flat shoes, although she was eventually allowed in.

A spokesperson for the festival confirmed to the BBC on email: “Rules have not changed throughout the years (tuxedo, formal dress for gala screenings) and there is no specific mention about the height of the women’s heels as well as for men’s.” She added that hosts and hostesses were reminded of the rules.

The story provoked widespread outrage on Twitter, where the head of film at the SXSW festival, Janet Pierson, tweeted a link to the story with the words: “Why I don’t go to Cannes”.

British writer Caitlin Moran tweeted: “Utterly extraordinary it’s reported that women – including those with disabilities – are being TURNED AWAY at Cannes for not wearing heels.”

Buzzfeed’s film critic Alison Willmore said actress Emily Blunt had been asked about the story at a press conference while promoting her own film, Sicario, at Cannes. “I think everyone should wear flats,” the Devil Wears Prada star said, according to Willmore.

The festival said it had made efforts to address the gender imbalance between male and female directors this year, despite only two female directors being in competition.
