Filmmaker defends Sauti Sol over suing Azimio

Sauti Sol announced that Azimio leadership infringed on their rights by using their hit Extravaganza in their advertisement clip.

As such they would be seeking regal redress over the matter.

This did not go down well with die hard Azimio fans who rushed to unsubscribe from their YouTube channel.

However, Sauti Sol gained back the subscribers in less than a week.

Azimio’s legal team together with Sauti Sol’s lawyers are in talks to settle the matter that touches on the Synchronisation of their music on the Azimio production posted on various social media.

Creatives showed their support for Sauti Sol, among them was award winning filmmaker Simiyu Baraza.

Simiyu took to social media to advocate for Sauti Sol to be heard and their rights honoured.

He wrote, “Let us forget politics for a while: A very dangerous misinterpretation of the laws has occurred in the MCSK response to Sauti Sol’s complaints.

It sets a precedence where, for example, as a musician, who has used hundreds of thousands at the minimum to compose and market a song, if your music is played by a DJ say at a roadshow, a corprate can then take your music and use it as a soundtrack to an advertisement of one of its products and broadcast it to gain its billions.

The corprate then can say they paid Kshs 25,000 to MSCK for rights to use the music at the roadshow so chill, and you wait for the Kshs 3,000 at the end of the year that is paid to the lucky ones as royalties.

Five or more corporates can do the same the whole year and you just get the same net MCSK royalties if their claim stands. Yet the rights to such usage of the song is squarely the publishers to be granted to the client, where the musicians earn millions of shillings for use of their song in clearly defined, restricted manner.”

Simiyu also critisiced MCSk boss Ezekiel Mutua’s stance on defending Azimio and not the artistes he is mandated to serve.

He explained, “MCSK is a licensing collector and distributors of royalties for public performances and as such can not purport to wield such powers ; as they clearly can be used to disadvantage creators of original works from getting their due compensations.

It is clear in their mandate, and what is more clearer is in the Kenya Copyright Laws. CMOs can not claim and usurp rights that accrue directly to the rights holders who are the publishers/creators of the music. If they do so then they are not worth being part of, on matters Intellectual Property.”

He concluded, “Once the political season is over and artists are back to their regular grinds, this unfortunate debacle will come to bite. We expect more of such complaints from this dangerous precedence. The correct stand as per the law is in the Kenya Copyright Board KECOBO response about what constitutes the rights and limitations in a licensing for public performances.”

Given a chance, I would marry many women, all women – Rema

Visiting Nigerian singer Divine Ikuborv known by the street moniker Rema has officially landed in Kenya ahead of his much-anticipated concert slated for May 7, 2022, at Carnivore grounds.

The Calm Down hit-maker touched down on the Kenyan soil on Tuesday night and has been in the country since visiting various sites.

At a press briefing today, Rema joked about his prowess.

In his song, Women, he intimates that he could marry all the women he has featured in his music videos.

“It actually means I have a preference for all types of women, size, shape and colour,” Rema explained, “The way I placed that lyric and verse is to show that if I had a chance to marry all of them, I would. And if I had the strength as well, I would.”

Rema praised former Camp Mulla vocalist Karun saying he would love to collab with her.

“I know Sauti Sol I have worked with them,” he said, “And Karun is super cool. I listen to her a lot. She is super talented and her vibe is different ai actually want to work with her.”

“Some artists don’t like to work together not because they are not cool but because their fans are different. We should look past that and spend more time together to understand our mind space,” Rema noted about working with any other artiste out there.

Ahead of his concert Rema took to his social media pages, saying, “Kenya I’m here, we up this SATURDAY & bring your friends! 🤪✌🏾🇰🇪.”

At Carnivore grounds, Rema will share stage with Kenya’s Hip Hop group Wakadinali, Wyre and Nazizi – as they make a mega return as Necessary Noize, Lil Maina and Only Rosa among others.

Sauti Sol’s guitarist Polycarp releases his solo project ‘How I Met Your Mama’

Celebrated guitarist Polycarp Otieno from Sauti Sol has officially released his debut solo single “How I Met Your Mama” – off his upcoming debut album Father Studies.

This marks the start of his individual journey as a solo entertainer and singer.

The new single is a heartfelt dedication to his son and a real-life story, explaining how Polycarp met his wife Lady Mandy

“The song is a fusion of Kenyan and Burundian sounds and optics to show my son his roots. Because that is part of his identity,” adding “We need to tell African stories to our young ones. I chose to start from how I met my son’s mother, my wife. Conversations with my friends also proved that most of us don’t know the full story of how our parents met.”

Good times Thursdays! Pictures of the rugged jeans edition

Fancy Fingers takes his fans through an intimate journey that features his wife Lady Mandy, their son Sulwe and the celebrated Burundian drums, Ingoma.

On the powerful visuals, he reflects on his fatherhood journey.

Being a Father has quickly taught me that it’s not just about me anymore, I have found myself selflessly and effortlessly pouring out love to my little one. At the same he fills me up with so much joy and happiness in ways I have never known, or experienced before – it’s unconditional love.

Earlier on, he shared;

“Father Studies as a concept came to me after the birth of my son, while I was on paternity leave. I realized just how being fully present was impactful to my small family, it gave me the chance to develop a special bond with my son. It’s sad that the Kenyan law only gives two weeks leave to the father, leaving the chunk of the parenting to the mother, which should not be the case,” he said.

Check out the song;

‘They told me to leave Sol Generation, Crystal explains why she stopped working with Sauti sol

Sol Generation first lady Crystal Asige has told her side of the story regarding her exit from the Sauti Sol-owned record label.

Speaking in a TV interview on Switch TV’s ‘Chat Spot’, the talented vocalist said the label’s management kicked her out in November of last year.

“Back in November they told me that they wanted me to leave, they don’t want me to be in the group anymore and so I left. That’s the beginning and the end of the story,” Crystal said.

In a previous interview with Classic 105, Sauti Sol’s Bien Aime that there was a dispute that led to Asige’s exit.

‘I am cancer free,’ Bishop Kiuna narrates how tough it was fighting for his life

Bien added that the break was amicable.

“We are not working with crystal anymore and this came with a lot of complications. The dispute was amicably solved and we are glad we worked together for the one year and at least people know Crystal now,” he said.

“I think she got a platform where she can grow.”

Asige is back on the music scene with her first solo project of 2022, an awe-inspiring gospel song dubbed ‘Safer’.

Inspired by Psalms 119:105, the song seeks to offer acceptance, patience, trust in the process, the audacity to dream big, playing the long game rather than instant gratification, authenticity, and a “we won’t stop” attitude.

Asige was the first female to be signed under Sol Generation. She featured in their hit Extravaganza alongside BenSoul, Kaskazini (a Kenyan urban-fusion trio formed by Chris, Ywaya and Israel) and Nviiri.

Bien then said they are looking for proper artistes and not replacements.

Njugush to Sauti Sol! How your favorite celebrities have been conned

If you have lived in Nairobi or have a friend in Nairobi, then you have a story of how the con men and women of Nairobi have their ways in your life.

Well, Kenyan celebrities have shared a couple of their encounters with conmen and women.

Kuconiwa is just a part of living in Nairobi, right? And there’s nothing you can do about it, but atleast by sharing your story, someone will read and they will be careful not to be in the same situations as yours.

Check out some con stories by our Kenyan celebrities;

Comedian Njugush

Njugush is one of the most hilarious comedians in the 254. He will make fun about all situations. right?

Well, during a live session on his YouTube channel last week, Njugush was sharing stories with his wife Cele and the topic happened to be that of whether he has ever been conned.

Well, laughing Njugush narrated to his audience of his encounter with cons.

Anita Nderu comes out clean that she is a member of LGBTQ community

“Sometimes back, being obedient cost me alot. At OTC, I met some guys. Kulikua hadi na mama wa heshima nikaona kakitu kameroll mbele yangu, so they told me, eei kijana nisaidie kuokota hiyo kitu. Kumbe it was two hundred bob.

“As a pastors child, I did that respectifully and gave a guy who appreciated me for being ‘good’. He gave me the money. As I was about to go, he calls me and asked if I wanted to win so the money would double. They were playing ‘Kamare’. I joined in and tried the first time with their two hundred but nikakuliwa. They asked me how much I had. I was in high school and so, during the term, nilikua nimejinyima kabisa and had save five hundred bob to buy a radio. So I had five hundred in my pocket.”

Njugush says he does not understand how he removed his money and all of it was ‘eaten’ including his bus fare of a hundred bob.

Njugush was left begging people to contribute money for fare to get back home.

That was his con story.

Is Nameless’s advice to young girls to keep off men with 6-packs sound? (opinion)

Sauti Sol

Bien narrated how they were swindled out of their earnings following a show they did in Congo years ago.

Speaking on the Janjaruka series, Bien said the promoter put together a disappointing show in a small venue with a very small audience, to which they still gave their best performance.

“On the day of the show, we went to the venue at like 10 in the night! The venue was a ghost town, there were like 15 people in that place, and the sound was whack,” he said.

“We gave them a stadium show still and after the show, he was supposed to give us about $10,000 (Sh 1 million) as a way of finishing off the payment.

“He was like, ‘I’ll finish off in the morning before you guys go to the airport, I need to go to the bank’,” Bien recalls.

The following day, they woke up to find their hotel room hadn’t been paid for and it took some back-and-forth phone calls between the hotel manager and their promoter to get the matter settled.

The band were desperate to leave as it was December 24 and they wanted to be home for Christmas.

“So, manze, everyone is so desperate at that point because at that point I don’t even care about the money, I just want to leave. I just want to go,” he says.

They had to decide whether to chase their money with someone who already proved to be flaky or to just abscond and walk away.

At the end of the day, they were forced to make the difficult decision to walk away from the money and catch the bus that crossed the border into Kigali, where they managed to catch their flight back to Nairobi.

Bien advised artistes before performing anywhere to make sure of 90 per cent deposit, 10 per cent negotiable or before performing because once you’re on stage, it’s in God’s hands.

‘My firstborn daughter is 19 years old,’ Ben Githae opens up about his family

Janet Mbugua

Media personality Janet Mbugua has narrated how she was conned while on duty.

Janet recalled how she went to the home of an alleged serial killer’s victim in Nairobi’s Lenana area to interview the family about the alleged crime.

Janet was working for a South African media and had come to Kenya for work. “It was in 2010, there was a trending story on Onyancha, who was allegedly a serial killer carrying out some gruesome murders in Nairobi,” she said.

“We finally identified a man who said his son was allegedly a victim and we decided and agreed to go but asked to be provided with extra security as we had very expensive equipment with us.

“All I remember is we went deep into the hearts of Lenana to capture his story.”

On reaching there, the alleged victim’s father tricked her and her cameraman to trust a group of men that he called in to help offer more security and protection for them and their expensive equipment.

He then went ahead to invite Janet to his home for tea, leaving the cameraman and driver, a group of four people, and they seemed legit.

“It was almost 5pm. The distance where I was going to record was short. I went to the house and got to know the family as I wait for the videographer to come so he films us,” she said.

“It took long, 10, 20 minutes and I was like, it’s taking long, why hasn’t he come back? It is almost 6pm, so I told them, we need to go check what was happening.

“The man who had led us to the house says lemme go check to make sure they are okay. He left the house and 10 minutes later, he ran into the house, saying, ‘Wameibiwa! Gari imeenda.

She says she was confused and all of a sudden, she remembered her handbag with her passport were all in the car.

She managed to locate a police officer who helped her go back to the hotel she was living in.

Janet and her cameraman were later that evening reunited with her cameraman with no shoes on, shaken and all their equipment gone!

“Everthing we had filmed in Mombasa was gone with the equipment, worth half a million. We just cried and we could not continue with our work, but we were alive,” she said.

“The man we were going to interview is behind this whole thing. He basically set us up!” Janet recalls her cameraman telling him upon his return.

They never got a chance to ascertain if the man’s son was an actual victim to the serial killer’s crime or if the whole thing was a fake set-up from the get-go.

The couple was given three hard copies of the marriage certificate for them and their witnesses to sign.

A celebration was held at Pallet Cafe in Lavington thereafter. A close source to Classic 105 said it was an invite-only garden wedding of around 150-200 people.

“Only close friends and family were there. Bien’s mum and dad attended the wedding. Chiki’s parents and other family members were also present.”

Bien and Chiki met soon after she came into the country from the UK, where her family is based, and they hit it off almost immediately.

“We dated for a whole year before we decided to go public about our love affair,” Chiki said in a past interview.

“The only reason we decided to go public was for people to see that what we have is real. We did not want to go into stories of cheating, neither did we want to let people start suggesting either of us had gotten a ‘sponsor’.”

Finally! Sauti Sol’s Bien introduces his loving dad

Sauti Sol’s Bien has for the first time introduced his father to the world.

He has pointed it out severely that when he told his parents he is up for music as a career they questioned it. Okay, most artistes have the same narrative.

Sauti Sol’s Bien and Chimano/ Photo By Douglas

Many parents believe that anything other than formal employment is a waste of their children’s time, because they don’t earn money. If you don’t have an office job, then they (parents) are unhappy.

Bien took to social media to share a picture of his father and captioned:

My dad has finally reconciled with the fact that I’ll never get a real job. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Bien-Sauti Sol age

Thank God it finally happened because let us be honest Bien under Sauti Sol is one of the most successful Kenyan artistes. Together with his team, Savara, Chimano and Polycarp, they have traveled the world to release their songs.

Bruh, haven’t they made it? Considering the fact that the west has so many artistes, it is a privilege to have a Kenyan musician known there and their music played.

Music has made Bien money and now he is a fiancé to a beautiful lady, Chiki and they are ready to get married. You know weddings are just expensive but out of music, he can afford it now.

We have seen Bien’s mum during the birthday he celebrated in Rongai. She came on to the stage to just appreciate her son for who he turned out to be.

So now meet Bien’s dad. A picture just after he finally accepted the fact that music is his sons means of earning a living.

‘You ain’t loyal’ Nyashinski slams media personalities for not promoting Kenyan music

Mzazi Willy M Tuva and Nyashinski have started 2019 on  a bad note after the later accused the TV host of not doing enough to promote Kenyan music.

The spat was stirred up by an online video by Tuva that had a governor responding to his interview on what music he supports to which he responded ‘Kwangwaru’ by Harmonize.

Nyashinki then went online and hit out at Tuva in a widely shared comment viewed by many Kenyan artistes.

Willy even went head to state that he had hosted Nyash both on TV and radio.

Nyash wrote

“@mzaziwillytuva mbona hiyo video inaishia hapo? Hakuwa anajua msanii wa Kenya hata mmoja? 🤔 kuna utiaji flani hapa. Bado home ni Kenya 🇰🇪 boss. Utarudi tu. Shout out to @thenaiboi @sautisol @khaligraph_jones @thekingkaka @octopizzo @otilebrown and all other Kenyan artists who made major moves in 2018. The fans see y’all working. #love 🇰🇪”

Below are some of the comments from the fans and other artistes

ej_stunna: I have thought about this for the longest time, @mzaziwillytuva ukuaga mtiaji. the guy claims “Kulea Vipaji” but on the contrary i don’t think so. We should send him straight to Diamond’s WCB which he worships

dmhanjy01: bongo makes sense…Kenyan artist are all about the bang. ..nothing to sing along!

misssamoh: Try helping out a struggling talented Kenyan artist as well even if it’s just a collabo. I think that will go a long way. I’ve never seen you introduce a new artist.

dianaliboso: We blame @mzaziwillytuva for nothing this guy has done enough to support the crapy kenyan music we have. Useless lyrics and content from MOST of our so called kenyan artists. We have a very LONG way to go even to get to Tanzanian level. Now guys Hang me for that 😂
