Its been weeks since the late Sharon Otieno was laid to rest after her gruesome murder along side her unborn baby leaving Kenyans in shock.
The Rongo University student was expectant with Okoth Obado’s child and it is alleged that he had demanded that she terminate it something she was not willing to do.
Before her murder it had emerged that the slain Rongo University student, Sharon Otieno had to flee to Tanzania to escape constant harassment and stalking by people who wanted her to abort her pregnancy.
The family claims that her tormentors were aggressive to a point where she feared for her life.
“She travelled to Mwanza by road. While there, she switched off her phones to prevent anyone from reaching her,” her mother Hellen Auma told the media.
Detectives claim that plans to kill Sharon may have been hatched months before the killers struck earlier this month. According to the Standard, it has been alleged that the plan to eliminate her had aborted on at least two occasions.
Sharon’s mum, Hellen confirmed that her worried daughter left hurriedly for Mwanza in early August and stayed away for about a week.
“Sharon woke up one morning and told me she wanted to go to Tanzania because she was no longer safe in Kenya. She didn’t tell me who was threatening her life.”
Sharon returned a week before she fell into the hands of her killers.
She met her death in the most horrifying of ways. Sharon was stabbed 8 times. 3 times at the back of the neck, 4 back, 1 left side of the stomach.
She had many bruises and strangulation marks on her neck. Her abdomen was stabbed from the back to the front, killing the baby in her womb.
It has emerged that another woman was in a similar situation as Sharon.
Rhoda Odie Nyakwaka also had to abort her pregnancy after a reported affair with Governor Okoth Obado.
She happens to be Okoth Obado’s sister-in-law.
The First Lady, Hellen Okoth and Rhoda are born of the same father who got the latter after inheriting her widowed mother in Kadika village of Suna Central sub-county.
According to the Nairobian, when Hellen discovered the shenanigans of her beloved husband with Rhoda, she is said to have gone bonkers even as Obado, lawyer, Cliff Ombeta, insists they have never been an item.
But a member of the Kadika clan from Hellen’s side of the family told The Nairobian that Obado’s affair with Rhoda has remained an open secret for a long time.
There were allegations Obado even got Rhoda pregnant but the pregnancy was allegedly terminated at the behest of angry relatives who accused her of crossing the blood line.
The tabloid further reports that the man claimed the affair started three years back when the governor employed Rhoda at the county head-quarters in the catering department.
“He even gifted her a house in Nyasare estate within Migori town,” the relative added.
Before her untimely death Sharon Otieno, a second year student had plans with Migori Governor Okoth Obado to buy her a house in Nairobi .
The two did not get to come to a final agreement as Sharon’s body was found dumped in Kodera forest with eight stab woods. She was 7 months pregnant and the Governor has finally taken responsibility and admitted that the pregnancy was his.
The Governor declined, citing exorbitant prices, and promised to build her one in Migori County instead, this seems to have frustrated the late Sharon who opted to reach out to Obado’s wife Hellen and son Daniel.
The detectives revealed that the messages included
“Plans for travel together to a romantic getaway, whereto meet, certain items the Governor was to buy as well as as discussions on the future of the baby being carried by Sharon Otieno.”
Detectives claim Sharon forwaded the lovey dovey messages and conversation about the baby and the house to the wife and son. Obado recently came out to distance himself from Sharons murder.
In his first media conference since Sharon’s death he said
“We have come here as a family that has been devastated, ridiculed and embarrassed by the sad news of the demise of Sharon. We are indeed at our very lowest moment in life. Hata usingizi hakuna, hata appetite hakuna [loosely translated as, ‘We have lost sleep and appetite.”
Sending condolences to the friends and family of the deceased, Obado denied involvement in the murder that has seen so far his aide charged afresh in Nairobi and held in remand for fourteen more days.
“Yesterday (Tuesday), I recorded a statement in Kisumu with the DCIO. I would like to say here that I am still ready and willing to give further statements so that real killers of Sharon can be brought to book. As a law abiding citizen, I have nothing, and absolutely nothing, to do with the cruel death of Sharon.”
3. He is not to discuss any issues regarding the Sharon Otieno murder story. This means that even if he goes back to his job as a governor, he cannot justify his innocence to the public who elected him given most of them argue he is innocent.
4. He cannot travel 20kms away from Homa Bay County.
A group of women rights activists from across the country have condemned the murder of the 26-year-old.
Mr Abuor called for an amendment of the Constitution to have murder suspects denied bail. “This will help victims get justice. The suspects should remain in custody until proven innocent,” said Mr Abuor.
Might this words from an earlier post by Sharon Otieno hint that she might have know what might happen to her?
“At times mimi huchoka na human beings. It’s not right to ruin someone’s reputation for no apparent reason, aki you mean you really say **** about someone mpaka uone tu umemharibia. You will be judged someday because nothing bad goes unpunished, good morning guys.”
True to her words those who killed her and her unborn baby will not go unpunished because Psalms 140:12 states that
“I know that the Lord secures justice for the poor and upholds cause for the needy.”
Proverbs 28:17 also says that “A man burdened by bloodguilt will be a fugitive until death; let no one support him.”
According to EACC documents filed in court, Obado and his associates registered about 30 companies soon after he became governor through which they have pocketed Sh2.5 billion in “fictitious” contracts.
It has also newly built palatial home estimated to be worth more than Sh100 million located at Uriri.
The Rongo University student’s body arrived at their Magare home at 4pm. Friends, relatives and other mourners had travelled for over 50 kilometres to Med25 International-Kenya Hospital Mortuary in Mbita constituency to pick the body.
The body was transferred from Rachuonyo Level Four Hospital in Oyugis over security concerns about a month ago.
At the mortuary he said that
“This is heavy for us. We will bury our daughter, but nothing will make us forget this pain. Every time I view her body and see what her killers did, it angers me. They were merciless,”
He added that words cannot express the family’s agony, no wailing can heal their hearts and no amount of tears can describe their loss.
Some of the items in the fake budget include Sh300, 000 for hiring professional mourners from Migori and Ghana, catering services from Mwanza, Tanzania at Sh200, 000 and importing a coffin from England at Sh120, 000.
The total budget in the alleged fake budget is Sh2.5 million.
Funeral committee chairman Elijah Opiyo yesterday told journalists in Homa Bay that Sharon’s burial budget was Sh1.1 million.
Mr Opiyo said the social media users were out to portray the family as being obsessed with luxuries. He said they planned to buy a Sh50, 000 coffin.
Sharon was found murdered in Oyugis in September, she was seven months pregnant at the time of her murder,Migori governor Okoth Obado was responsible for the pregnancy.
Migori governor Okoth Obado is still being remanded at Industrial Area Prison after being arrested for the gruesome murder of Rongo university student Sharon Otieno and her unborn baby.
Sharon was killed and raped and her body dumped at Kodera forest after being abducted alongside Nation journalist Barrack Oduor who managed to escape.
Obado publicly accepted responsibility over Sharon Otieno’s death but since his arrest things have not been easy for the county boss.
For a man who was used to the best things life has to offer he now has to be contented with the little food that jail has to offer. From holding meetings with international leaders here is Okoth Obado’s itinerary while in jail.
1.Initially he was in a separate room but has now been moved to a room where he has to share with two or three other people.
2.From eating buffet and five course meals Obado now survives on kawaida jail food which includes rice and beans, ugali sukuma among other ‘delicacies’ the only difference is that his food is cooked a little better.
3.Wakes up to a head count, the police cannot risk any remandee escaping thus they do this every single day.
4.11.am Lunch is served, the liberty of eating when you feel like is no longer available for Mr Governor as he has to adhere to the set rules.
The mother of four told The Nairobian how she had a conversation with Sharon through the dream in which she received her warmly, but she was shortly disappointed when Sharon told her that she was going back to where she came from.
But not before mentioning the name of the person who killed her and the manner in which the heinous act was committed.
With sorrow written all over her face Melida recalls
“Sharon came to me through a dream. Our discussion was mainly cantered on the person who caused her death.”
Melida, however, is hesitant to mention the name of the killer “because police are conducting investigations into the matter. I assure you that I know the person who killed my daughter.”
Migori governor Okoth Obado is to spend 12 more days in remand at the Industrial Area Prison after a judge denied him bail in Sharon Otieno’s murder.
He will be remanded at the Industrial Area Prison until October 8 when the court will hear afresh his bail application, delivering her judgement High Court Judge Jessie Lessit said that She concurred with the prosecution a likelihood to tamper with the evidence, endanger national security.
“At this juncture, I’m disallowing the application and he will appear with the others on October 8. The nature of the case has been changing, more suspects are being charged.”
Senior investigation officer Clement Mwangi said there is a high likelihood of Obado interfering with or intimidating prosecution witnesses if released on bail.
But Obado’s lawyer Cliff Ombeta said Article 49 is clear that any accused person brought to the court shall be entitled to bail. Earlier on, Justice Lessit ordered the prosecution to consolidate all the cases surrounding the murder of Sharon.
Obado was arrested after recording his second statement at DCI headquarters in Kiambu he has denied any link to the murder of the 26-year-old student but admitted they were lovers.
He had earlier on told the police in Kisumu that he was equally interested in knowing Sharon’s killers
Obado who was spent the weekend in police custody appeared calm but pensive in the face of accusations of murdering his lover, Sharon.
He denied the charge and immediately his lawyers urged the court to release him on bail on grounds that his family solely depends on him and will suffer if he is detained.
But Justice Jesse Lessit directed that Obado be remanded at the Industrial Area prison and scheduled the bail application for hearing today.
Renown for her strictness in court, the presiding judge of the criminal division of the High Court in Nairobi is a jurist of few words,
Among the prominent cases she has handled include murder case against businessman Kamlesh Pattni and recently the murder case against prison beauty queen Ruth Kamande.
While she freed Pattni for lack of evidence, she sentenced Kamande to death for killing her boyfriend in cold blood.
Obado was accused of murdering Sharon between September 3-4, 2018, in Rachuonyo sub county within Homa Bay county jointly with others not before court.
Obado’s defence lawyers included former judge Nicholas Ombija, Evans Ondieki, Cliff Ombeta and Rodgers Sagana,Ombija told Justice Lessit that his client is not a flight risk and will attend court whenever required to do so.
On behalf of his client Nicholas Ombija says
“I shall abide by all conditions that shall be set by the court as a prerequisite for being granted bail. I shall not interfere with witnesses in this matter or investigations should any be carried out.”
In his affidavit, Obado says he is married to Hellen Obado and they have six school going children who depend on him for all their financial needs.
“The offence of murder like all other offences is bailable under the law. The said allegations however grave cannot deny me my basic fundamental rights and freedoms as enshrined in the constitution.”
The vehicle was intercepted on 16 September within Migori town and its driver, Jackson Otieno Gombe, arrested.
Nameless reveals the reason he is planning on buying a gun
When Gombe was questioned, it emerged that the vehicle operates as a taxi within Migori county and is registered in the name of Olivia Oloo Adhiambo, an employee of the Migori county government.
Olivia is married to Caspal Ojwang Obiero who also works at the county as PA to the governor. The DPP stated that Sharon’s murder was calculated
“The car track system in the vehicle was deactivated on September 3 –the date of the incident and reactivated the following day. This clearly was a well calculated move by the killers to conceal the movement of the vehicle in question,”
The First Lady and Rhoda are born of the same father who got the latter after inheriting her widowed mother in Itadika village of Suna Central sub-county.
When Hellen discovered the shenanigans of her beloved husband with Rhoda, she is said to have gone bonkers even as Obado, lawyer, Cliff Ombeta, insists they have never been an item.
But a member of the Kadika clan from Hellen’s side of the family told The Nairobian that Obado’s affair with Rhoda has remained an open secret for a long time.
The man claimed the affair started three years back when the governor employed Rhoda at the county head-quarters in the catering department. “He even gifted her a house in Nyasare estate within Migori town,” the relative added.
There were allegations that Obado had been accused her of crossing the blood line. The paternal relatives who were against the affair reportedly summoned Rhoda and exerted Pressure that she terminate the pregnancy when she was five months down the maternal path,
The meeting also resolved to have Rhoda relieved off her duties at the county as a cook in an acrimonious family fallout that left Hellen and Rhoda as bitter enemies.
A source at the county said Rhoda, name was still on the payroll though despite being relieved of her duties. The First Lady is said to have been very hurt by the affair and wanted nothing to do with Rhoda.
Rhoda is allegedly not welcome at the governors Rapongi home in Uriri sub-county.
Contacted by The Nairobian, Rhoda denied the allegations that she is intimately involved with the governor. She insisted that this was the first time she was hearing of the allegations and stated that she into not enemies with Hellen.
She also denied t hat the governor had bought her a house
“Those are lies Hellen is my sister and I have never had an affair with the governor.”
Rhoda said. She has a child she got with a different man after high school in 2011. The governor’s aide, remained cagey about the matter.
One of Obado’s associate distancing himself from the mater adding that
“0n that issue, I am sorry, but I won’t talk for the governor,”
Its been almost two weeks since the gruesome murder of second year student Sharon Otieno and her unborn baby but Kenyans are still in shock.
As new information emerges each day on what transpired before the body of Sharon was found in Kodera Forest it is clear that Obado and his family were in communication all along.
According to the governor, Sharon had sent a couple of text messages to him after last year’s election prompting him to invite her to Migori for a first meeting. However on that day, Obado was not able to see her as he had other engagements on county matters.
This move angered the late Sharon who sent a text to the County boss complaining about the bounced date and as the gentleman he is Obado apologized.
Later in the day, the county boss called to apologise and asked Sharon to reschedule a meeting to another day as he was to leave for Nairobi that evening. Coincidentally Sharon told Obado she wanted to ‘see him’ on her way to the city too, a development which led to the pair having their first meeting in Nairobi.
The next day, the two met at the Intercontinental Hotel for a drink. In Obado’s words, one thing led to another as the two began a romantic relationship. The Governor would then see Sharon regularly and most of their dates were either in Kisumu or Nairobi until one day she told the Governor of her pregnancy.
Obado recalled that in April during the Devolution Conference in Kakamega, he and other county bosses were booked at Acacia Hotel when Sharon travelled to Kisumu and checked in at Imperial hotel, in his name.
The Imperial hotel manager then called him saying ‘welcome your excellency to our hotel’ but he could not understand what he was talking about as he had already checked into the other hotel.
The manager then informed him that Sharon had checked in to ‘your usual room’. Late that evening, Sharon called the governor asking him to go to Imperial hotel. As he contemplated whether to go or not, he received a call from his wife Helen who inquired about his whereabouts. She then dropped a bombshell.
Hellen asked her husband whether he sure that he was at Acacia hotel but when he insisted that he was she demanded to know who Sharon Otieno was.
According to the statement, the Governor got confused and struggled to explain to his wife that there was no mischief involved and even asked her to come to Acacia.
The wife then warned Obado against going to Imperial saying if he dared, she would get the entire episode on camera as she had a team monitoring him. Scared by the warning, Obado called Sharon to say he can’t make it for the night since madam was around.
Ironically, Sharon was infuriated, Obado said and accused him of being with another woman and using madam’s name as an excuse.
Sharon told Obado that she knew where the wife was, telling him ‘every time I want to see you I first monitor madam’s movements’. He asked Sharon to plan and meet him later in Nairobi after the conference. Sharon, who had at this point not revealed to Obado that she had other children from previous relationships, wanted the Governor to move her to Nairobi.
The county boss linked her with an estate agent who found a Sh10 million apartment but she declined the house. She instead got another house in Westlands worth Sh35 million. Obado declined to buy the house and following further negotiations, Sharon said she was willing to settle for a Sh25 million house. This too, was declined.
This was in May this year. After this disagreement, the Governor then cut communication with Sharon and blocked her calls. Perhaps out of desperation, the student began sending texts to the governor’s close aides even family members.
Obado told police at one time, Sharon sent a picture of her baby bump to his eldest son who upon inquiring what the picture was for, was told “I am carrying your brother, send it to your mother.” As the texts intensified, his wife one day called him and asked that they talk as a family.
She asked the governor to hand over his phones to his security so that they can have uninterrupted discussion. Having sensed the issue at hand, Obado spoke first.
He confessed to his wife about ‘that Sharon that you had warned me about sometime back’, who was now pregnant. The two later called their children and explained the same to them. Read more
The Homa Bay government requested the family to postpone the ceremony for a day. Sharon’s mother Melida Auma said,
“We realised the cost of preserving the foetus is higher so we decided to bury it.”The foetus will be ferried from Kirindo Hospital mortuary in Suba North. It will be buried before afternoon as local tradition dictates.”
Auma said the county government wanted the burial postponed to give it time to help with the funeral. Adding that she could not confirm Sharon’s burial date.
“Homa Bay Water executive Dickson Nyawinda requested us to postpone the burial to enable them to offer aid.”
It was during one of Sharon’s visits that she opened communication with Dan Acho-la Toto, the governor’s son. Dan allegedly promised to ensure that Sharon is given a tender at the county government.
According to the Nairobian, a source who is close to Obado’s family says
“They started dating in April this year and were spotted together in Kisumu and Migori. Sharon feared for her life. She was worried the relative was plotting something bad after realising that she was being monitored and trailed,”
The source also added that the poisoning of Sharon was even considered. The source claims that Michael Oyamo was close to Obado’s wife, allegations lawyer Ombeta denied. It is claimed the official personal assistant to the governor is a man known as Kaspal Obiero.
“There was no communication between the wife and all those people mentioned in the saga. The governor’s wife did not have Oyamo’s mobile number and she was less concerned about Sharon.”
