Obama to send 1,500 more troops to Iraq as campaign expands

President Barack Obama has approved sending up to 1,500 more troops to Iraq, roughly doubling the number of U.S. forces on the ground helping Iraqi and Kurdish forces battle the militant group Islamic State, U.S. officials said on Friday.

Obama’s decision greatly expands the scope of the U.S. campaign and the geographic distribution of American forces, some of whom will head into Iraq’s fiercely contested western Anbar province for the first time to act as advisers.

It also raises the stakes in Obama’s first interactions with Congress after his Democratic Party was thumped by Republicans in mid-term elections this week. The White House said it would ask Congress for $1.6 billion for a new “Iraq Train and Equip Fund” and billions more for operations to battle the group.

Is Mia Love, first black Republican woman elected to congress, the Obama of the Republican Party?

Even her name is media friendly. Mia Love instantly became the darling of the Republican Party on Wednesday, after being elected as its first black female member of Congress — and she is a Mormon to boot.

She has also rapidly drawn comparisons with Barack Obama, not least since she wowed her party’s 2012 national convention with a tale of rags-to-political-riches, much like the young Senator Obama did in 2004.

“Many of the naysayers out there said that Utah would never elect a black Republican LDS woman to Congress,” she said at her victory rally, referring to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or Mormons.

“Not only did we do it, we were the first to do it,” said the 38-year-old, who was previously mayor of Saratoga Springs, a city 35 miles (56 kilometers) south of Salt Lake City.

Republicans win senate control, ready to confront Obama

A Republican tide ripped the Senate away from Democrats Tuesday, according to CNN projections, giving the GOP full control of Congress and the power to pin down President Barack Obama during his last two years in office.

The thumping win upends the balance of power between the White House and Capitol Hill only six years after Obama’s Democrats swept to power and marginalized Republicans in a rush to reform health care, Wall Street and pass a huge stimulus package.

Now, it’s Democrats who will take the back seat on Capitol Hill, relying mostly on the power of the filibuster to stymie Republicans and keep Obama’s legacy intact.

US televangelist blames Obama for Ebola

Televangelist and founder of Christians United for Israel John Hagee claims that Ebola is God’s judgement on US President Barack Obama for trying to divide Jerusalem.

“God says that when any nation divides up the land of Israel, they are subject to judgement, and dividing Jerusalem is dividing the land,” Hagee said according to the Jerusalem Post.

“There are grounds to say that judgement has already begun, because he, the president, has been fighting to divide Jerusalem for years now. We are now experiencing the crisis of Ebola,” Hagee said.

According to the report he also cited Matthew 24:7, claiming that Ebola counts as a pestilence.

“Pestilence is an illness for which there seems to be no cure,” Hagee said. “That would certainly describe Ebola.”

The latest Ebola outbreak was first reported in Guinea, before spreading in West Africa.

Oh! Where is The President’s left hand?

For the second time in a matter of months, President Uhuru Kenyatta has been hosted at the White House, at the invitation of US President Barrack Obama.

Nothing gets Kenyans more excited than seeing our President, and our ‘cousin’ President on the same photo. It is always something to talk about. The latest such photo has created so much buzz on social media with the position of President Kenyatta’s left hand in the frame the main point of discussion.

The two heads of state are pictured together with their wives. But while President Obama who is standing next to Margaret Kenyatta seems to have kept his distance,  Kenyatta has his hands wrapped around Michelle’s waist.

The photo has elicited mixed reactions on twitter and facebook with many pointing out to another photo taken at the White House last month, where President Kenyatta strikes a similar pose. I guess it is safe to conclude that our President is friendlier than most, including Obama.

President Kenyatta and First lady Margaret are in the US for The UN General Assembly.

Anti-Obama Ad Compares US President to a Bad Online Date

Critics are saying the Republican group is capitalizing on NFL news by comparing Obama to an abusive boyfriend

An outside Republican group, Americans for Shared Prosperity, is running a new ad that compares President Obama to a bad boyfriend. The 60-second spot features a woman talking about a man she met online in 2008 with a seemingly perfect profile: “smart, handsome, charming articulate.” But since, their relationship has soured.

AFSP bashes Obama for recent NSA spying scandals and the president’s foreign policy as if they were personal transgressions. “He’s in my emails and text messages, spying on me but ignoring real threats,” the woman says. The ad goes on to critique Obamacare: “He thinks the only thing I care about is free birth control, but he won’t even let me keep my doctor.”

Some have slammed the spot for seemingly comparing Obama to an abusive partner. The woman says her relationship with “Barack” was on the rocks in 2008 but she “stuck with him because he promised he’d be better.

He’s great at promises.” Critics say the ad’s language echoes too closely that of the recent #WhyIStayed movement in which domestic abuse victims explained why they remained with their abuser.

Many listed false promises of change among the reasons for staying.

President Obama to Unveil Expanded Ebola Response

President Obama plans to unveil an expanded U.S. response to the Ebola outbreak in West Africa, the worst outbreak of the disease in history.

Obama, who has called the outbreak a national security priority, will outline new steps to address the crisis during a visit to the Centers for Disease Control and prevention in Atlanta.

According to senior administration officials, the ramped up military effort centers on command and control, logistics, training and engineering support.

With the new measures the United States is significantly ramping up its response, and the next steps will focus on command and control, logistics, training and engineering support.

They include:

  • Creating a joint force command headquarters in Monrovia, Liberia. By end of the week, the U.S. will have general officer in place to lead the effort, known as “Operation United Assistance.”
  • Providing engineers to build treatment units. Up to 17 separate facilities with 100 beds each.
  • Training support for health care workers, up to 500 health care workers per week, for as long as needed (although budgeting plans for a six-month period). Training will come from U.S. military medical personnel. The administration hopes to have force on the ground in a couple of weeks. After this scaling up is done, the expectation is for there to be up to 3,000 Defense Department personnel on the ground in support of the joint force command.

Obama’s suit gets more attention than his words at presser

On Thursday afternoon Barack Obama delivered some stern words toward the Islamic State and Russia.

This meant, of course, that Twitter was abuzz with talk about the beige suit the president was sporting.

The last time tan togs were this discussed in Washington, Vice President Al Gore had started wearing earth tones after feminist author and political consultant Naomi Wolf reportedly told him it would make him look more like an “alpha male”.

“Obama’s suit gets more attention than his words? Welcome to every day in the first lady’s life” – Laura Basset The HuffingtonPost

Here is an unofficial list of the 10 best lines on Twitter during the president’s speech:

“The emperor has no taste in suits.” – Mark Hemmingway, the Weekly Standard.

“Who will have the first ‘Potus Suit History’ piece? Even money on BuzzFeed, but could also see Slate on it.” – Josh Sternberg, the Washington Post.

“Obama vows to defeat whoever made him wear this suit.” – Josh Barro, the New York Times.

“Missed Obama’s remarks, but from the pictures I’ve seen, the main problems with his suit are the lapels and that it doesn’t fit very well.” – Brian Beutler, the New Republic.

Russian deputy PM mocks Obama by tweeting ‘unmanly’ photo of president

One Russian leader has made it very clear what the Kremlin thinks of the US in a tweet mocking their president’s masculinity.

In a strange display of one upmanship, deputy prime minister Dmitry Rogozin posted a picture on his Twitter account of President Vladimir Putin petting a leopard next to one of Mr Obama holding a fluffy poodle, with the caption “we have different values and allies.”

The post, which was meant as a dig at the US President’s unequal manly status, was re-tweeted more than 600 times in two hours.
