Sonko, Kidero supporters clash at County Assembly as senator names graft suspects

Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko’s supporters faced off with Senator Mike Sonko’s outside City Hall on Tuesday. The crowds sang songs in praise of their preferred leader and in mockery of the other, and teased each other.

Sonko’s supporters had gathered ahead of his address to city MCAs following their return to work after the December holidays. Kidero’s supporters also showed up. Two trucks of anti-riot police were deployed to maintain order.

Sonko arrived from a shop on Mama Ngina Street where he had gone to photocopy a bundle of documents. He said the documents support his claims that corruption is rampant at City Hall.

Sonko claimed that Sh252 million was embezzled during Kidero’s transition into office. He said officials did not bank the money as required.
He further accused Chief of Staff George Wainaina of corruption and one Peter Hongo of fraudulently awarding a garbage collection tender.

“Poverty and unemployment are affecting our people. The county government needs to create wealth. I will support the county in formulating laws but the Executive should address issues of accountability. We can only make Nairobi great if individuals do not steal public money,” he said.

Sonko said he has played an oversight role in administration. He said the county chief finance officer Jimmy Kiamba was sent on compulsory leave over corruption following his intervention.

“I have ensured public land is not grabbed, I intervened in the cases of Buruburu Girls and Kamukunji high schools whose grabbed land has been returned,” he added.

Sonko condemned Wainaina for leasing Bowling Green Restaurant along Limuru road to a private company saying the decision was rushed while Kidero was new in office. He asked the governor to clean up the procurement process which he said is flawed.

Jubilee to back Kidero against impeachment motion

Jubilee MCAs in Nairobi county yesterday said they will not support a motion to impeach Governor Evans Kidero.

Cord MCAs plan to impeach Kidero on grounds that he is not performing and he is disloyal to ODM.

Minority leader Abdi Guyo said, however, Jubilee will seek dialogue to iron out contentious issues.

‘We will not be party to that. We will root for dialogue as President Uhuru has always said. We will not agree to be used as a rubber stamp,” he told the Star on the phone yesterday.

Karen MCA David Mberia said once the assembly reconvenes on Tuesday, they will table an impeachment motion against Kidero.

“Kidero has done nothing for the county. When the Lang’ata Road Primary School land was grabbed, the governor kept mum and only spoke after everybody else had spoken,” he said.

“Kidero is actually disinterested in serving Nairobians and it’s time we got serious as MCAs and removed him from office.”

Last week, majority leader Elias Otieno, a close ally of Kidero, asked him to resign from ODM and seek reelection on a different party ticket.

Kidero supports Philip Okundi of Maendeleo Democratic Party against Moses Kajwang’ of ODM in the Homa Bay senator by-election to be held on Thursday next week.

Guyo said, however, Kidero is free to support whoever he wants in Homa Bay.

MCA in suicide attempt after alleged split with girlfriend

A Baringo member of the county assembly is recuperating at a private hospital in Nakuru following a suicide attempt at his home in Kabarnet town on Thursday.

20 year old Kibiwott Munge who is the youngest MCA in the country after he was elected to represent Perkera Lembus ward when he was just 19 years old was rushed to the Kabarnet district hospital on Thursday before he was transferred to Nakuru early Friday.

It was not immediately known the reason the young legislator wanted to end his life but sources intimated that he took a bottle of poison following difficulties in his personal life.

There was no immediate confirmation from the police or county government officials about the matter. Baringo County Chief Officer for Health Services Dr Gideon Toromo however confirmed that the young MCA was indeed admitted in hospital.

“We cannot talk on the reason of his hospitalization. These are not matters to be addressed in the press,” Toromo said when contacted.

“We only receive between Sh5,000 and Sh6,000 on Sunday which is too minimal to do tangible work,” Ogonyo said.

He said the decline is because MPs and MCAs in the region do not attend church services.

“If our MPs and MCAs do not attend church services, where will we get money?” Ogonyo asked wananchi at the Jomo Kenyatta Sports Ground during Mashujaa Day celebrations.

Ogonyo urged the area leaders to take after their Rift Valley counterparts “who flock to their churches during Sunday services.”

The bishop singled out Kisumu East MP Shakeel Shabbir saying the MP only attended service at his church once “during the campaign period.”
