Lupita, Victoria Kimani, Sauti sol Nominated For Africa Entertainment Awards

Lupita Nyong’o, Sauti Sol and Victoria Kimani are on the list of nominees for different categories of the African entertainment awards.

Victoria Kimani has been nominated for the best international artist (Canada edition) up against Tanzania’s Vanessa Mdee, Bucie from SA as well as Yemi Alade and Sheyi Shay from Nigeria.

Guest performances will be by Uganda’s Bebe Cool, Awilo Longomba from Congo and Bow bow from the USA.

The awards will held on the 5th of September at Living Arts Centre Mississauga in Canada.

The USA version of the awards has, Lupita has nominated as the most influential person, while Sauti sol have been nominated for the hottest group

The awards will be on the 31st of October and the voting lines close on the 10th of October.

Africa Entertainment awards are dedicated to honouring achievements in African entertainment and recognizing individuals who have had a positive impact on the African entertainment industry.

Kenyans Named In Africa’s Top 50 Movers And Shakers List

Forbes Africa has come up with a list of top 50 African movers and shakers and a few Kenyans have made it to the list.

According the Forbes the  people on the list personify modern Africa: entrepreneurs and artists, athletes, politicians and activists. They were chosen by a jury under the direction of renowned economic journalist Mfonobong Nsehe .

Here are the Kenyans on the list:

Lupita Nyong’o – Kenyan actress and filmmaker was celebrated in her Hollywood debut in “12 Years a Slave.” She earned the Best Supporting Actress Academy. Award for her role as the slave Patsey.  She is a graduate of Yale University’s School of Drama. She is currently working on “Queen Of Katwe,” a film based on the true story of the rise of a Ugandan chess prodigy.

Ory Okolloh – lawyer Ory Okolloh, 37, first came into the limelight as a blogger and co-founder of Ushahidi, which Kenyans used to report incidences of violence through email, text message and Twitter following the 2007 elections. Ushahidi’s open-source software is now used around the world for similar causes. Okolloh, a passionate advocate of good governance and accountability in Africa, now serves as Managing Director of Omidyar Network Africa, which invests in African for-profit and nonprofit organizations that foster a civil society.

Sauti Sol –  The quartet of Bien-Aimé Baraza, Willis Chimano, Delvin Mudigi and Polycarp Otieno make up Sauti Sol, Kenya’s most popular music export on the African continent. The enormously successful boy band sings in Swahili and blends local and regional dances and music with western-inspired music genres like soul and R’n’B. Sauti means “voice” in Swahili. In 2014, they won the best African Act at the 2014 MTV European Music Awards.


Lupita Nyong’o In Town For Sister’s Wedding

Kenya’s Hollywood sweetheart Lupita Nyong’o is finally in Nairobi. But it seems Kenyan’s may not get a glimpse of the fashion icon because she is here on family duty. In an exclusive revealed by Word Is the 12 Years A Slave star is in the country attending her younger sister Wam’s wedding.

The wedding will take place over the weekend at the plush Naivasha planes.  A source close to the family, told Word Is that “Yes, the Nyong’os’ will be at a wedding this weekend and it is for their daughter, Wam. It will be a purely private family function. No media is permitted.”

Lupita Nyong’o was last spotted in South Africa shooting her latest film Queen of Katwe. The film is based on the life story of  Harriet Mutesi a Ugandan girl’s journey to becoming a chess grandmaster and is the role played by Lupita.

5 Kenyan Actors who have made it in Hollywood

When Kenyans successful in Hollywood are mentioned Lupita nyong’os name is on every ones lips and with good reason. She put Kenya on the map in Hollywood. Before her rise to fame were other great actors. They may not be as big as the oscar winning actress, but they have managed to set a name for themselves in the international market. Here’s a list.

1. Edi Gathegi
Edi is a Kenyan born American based actor who has appeared in severaL TV shows and films. The 36-year old actor was born in Eastlands Nairobi but studied in the USA. He is known for his role in X-Men First Class, Gone Baby, Crank, The Twilight Saga, Beauty and the Beast.


2. Oliver Litondo
Oliver is a Kenyan actor born in Kakamega. He studied in the United States and was a tv presenter before venturing into acting. Litondo is known majorly for his role starring Kimani Maruge in the movie The First Grader. He has also starred in Sheen: Queen of the Jungle, Ivory Hunters, The Search for the Nile and The Bush Trackers.



3. Charles Gitonga Maina
He is best known for his co-starring role in The Air Up There where he plays Saleh. He has also made guest appearances in the series Lost land.


4. Benjamin Ochieng’
He was born and raised in Nairobi but went to study computer science in USA. He ventured into music and art later and finally got into acting. His most notable works are playing Reverend Jude in the movie God’s not dead and in his role is the movie Kwame and the 2003 film Tears of the sun. He has also starred in the movie Default.


5. Lupita Nyong’o
Nyong’os debut in Hollywood was through Steve McQueen’s historical drama 12 Years a Slave in 2013. She won an Oscar for the best supporting actress in 2014. Her rise to fame has not stalled since, she was voted by People magazine as the most beautiful woman and her featured in several other magazine covers. In Kenya, Lupita is remembered in the sex, money and party TV series Shuga. She is currently in Kampala shooting her next film ‘Queen of Katwe’. Lupita Nyong’o’s Sh13 million Pearl Oscar Dress Stolen

According to reports by TMZ, Lupita’s Sh13million Oscar dress was stolen from her hotel room at the London West Hollywood on Tuesday. Lupita Nyong’o made it to our list of the best dressed celebrities at the Oscars in her 6,000 pearls dress which was a custom made Calvin Klein gown.

The 31-year old Nyong’o has become a darling of the red carpet and even made it to our top dressed celebrity HERE at the 87th Annual Academy Awards.

Lupita, Ory Okolloh, Jacqueline Mugo among Africa’s 50 most influential women

Kenyan award winning actress Lupita Nyong’o has been named amongst Africa’s 50 most influential women by french magazine Juene Afrique. Also in the list is Ory Okolloh who is a Kenyan activist, lawyer, and blogger and Jacqueline Mugo who is the Executive Director of the Federation of Kenya Employers.

Nyong’o has been recognized for her impact in the film industry after receiving several accolades for her role in the film 12 years a slave. She won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, becoming the sixth black actress to win the award, the first African actress to win the award, the first Kenyan actress to win an Oscar.

Ory Okolloh who is an activist and a co-founder of Mzalendo website and Ushahidi forums which according to forbes is a forum which combines mapping with eye-witness reports, has been used to monitor elections in Kenya, Mexico and India, track violence in the Eastern Congo and map post-earthquake crisis in Haiti.

Jacqueline Mugo who is the Federation of Kenya Employers Executive Director was also recognized for the role she plays in leader of african managers. According to business forum Jacqueline has quite a lot of tasks under her leadership she is the Secretary General of Business Africa, the Employers regional body and voice in the continent. She is also Executive Director of the Federation of Kenya Employers, Chairperson of the East African Employer’s Organisation and board member of the Governing Body of the International Organization of Employers and the National Social Security Fund. She maintains roles as Deputy Secretary General of the Pan-African Employers Confederation and Member of the ILO Governing Body.

Fans defend Lupita against Kenya Moore diss

Fans of Kenyan actor and Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o took down reality show star Kenya Moore for alluding that she has a “big head”.

Page Six reports that the Real Housewives of Atlanta star Kenya Moore was displeased when Lupita did not consider her request for a snapshot. On her Twitter, Kenya claimed that there were a lot of cool people at the Golden Globes after party, but Lupita was not one of them.

When a fan asked her who she hang out with during the party, the reality star answered, “Lots of people who were so cool @taylorswift13 was so sweet but @Lupita_Nyongo refused 2 take pics After 2 movies.” This tweet however, has since been deleted after it was posted on Monday.

The fan also asked Moore if she has just dissed Lupita with her response and the reality star was quick to defend her comment. The reality star said she was a “huge fan” of the Oscar winner; however, she was disappointed that even though there 1,000 A-listers on the event, Lupita chose to act that way. “I want 2 always stay humble,” she tweeted.

Lupita’s fans went ham on Kenya calling her a “desperate”, “attention seeker” who is trying to “remain relevant”.

David Oyelowo to Star With Lupita Nyong’o in ‘Americanah’

Having already secured a Golden Globe nomination for his work in “Selma,” David Oyelowo is looking to set up his future slate.  Oyelowo is set to co-star with Lupita Nyong’o in the indie drama “Americanah.”

Based on the Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie novel, the story follows a pair of young Nigerian immigrants who face a lifetime of struggle while their relationship endures.

Brad Pitt is producing through his Plan B production banner along with Nyong’o and Andrea Calderwood. Plan B produced “Selma,” and after having such a good experience working with them, Oyelowo jumped at the opportunity to board another project they were producing.

The film is now looking to attach a writer and director, with no production start date set yet.

Oyelowo has a busy end of the year, with “Interstellar,” “Selma” and “A Most Violent Year” all bowing in the last month. He is expected to be in the Oscars conversation for his performance in “Selma,” and he can be seen next in the indie “Captive” opposite Kate Mara.

Lupita Nyong’o set to feature in a Ugandan movie

Rumour has it that Lupita Nyong’o is set to appear  in a  film, which will be based on the book “Queen of Katwe,” by Tim Crothers.

Award winning Kenyan actress Lupita Nyong’o is to be cast as Ugandan chess prodigy Phiona Mutesi, in a new film about Mustesi’s life called “Queen of Katwe” that is being produced and directed by the likewise acclaimed film director Mira Nair.

Mutesi’s story was the inspiration for a book by Tim Crothers, similarly titled, The Queen of Katwe: A Story of Life, Chess, and One Extraordinary Girl’s Dream of Becoming a Grandmaster.

She’s also been the subject of short documentaries and news reports, capturing her inspiring story. Lupita Nyong’o is a Kenyan-Mexican actress, who was born in Mexico City, Mexico and is best remembered for her role in “12 years a Slave” earning her an Oscar award for best supporting actress.

Actress Lupita Nyongo last night received her Glamour Woman of the Year Award 2014 at a colorful ceremony in New York.

She was honored together with a host of women celebrities,entrepreneurs among others Chelsea Clinton, Sylvia Earle, Robin Roberts, Mindy Kaling and Samantha Power.

Nyong’o won a supporting-actress Oscar for her performance in “Twelve Years a Slave,” capping her swift rise to the top ranks of Hollywood and the fashion world.

She was also named a new face of Lancome and appeared on the cover of People magazine’s Most Beautiful issue. She will be appearing in the new “Star Wars” movie.

KikoRomeo took the runway at the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Africa in Johannesburg recently. The Kenyan fashion line opened with Sanele, a model with albinism, wearing a sweatshirt with the slogan “It’s in my DNA” emblazoned on the front.

Speaking about this, head designer Ann McCreath said: “Many years ago I was challenged by Lupita Nyong’o to put people with albinism on the runway, so that they could be viewed as beautiful just like anyone else. After watching her movie ‘In My Genes’ I really wanted to contribute to the reduction of stigmatism around albinism, and tonight I have been given that opportunity.”

Oscar winner Lupita is known for championing the rights of people with albinism in Kenya. She pushed the message further through her documentary titled In My Genes.

Lupita Nyong’o is “undressed”on Glamour magazine

Lupita Nyong’o was interviewed by one of the worlds largest magazine Glamour.

Digging into her childhood, her journey to success, her skin colour and the effect it has had , her popularity, challenges, he fashion sense etc.

On the interview she says that the fact that her image and colour has brought a positive change in that there has been n increase in the number of dark skinned models on the run way, means that the world has slowly started to see beyond “colour”.

She also talks about her experience with a teacher who once commented on her  dark skin and asked where she would find someone darker than her.

She also says she hasn’t learnt how to be a celebrity.
