16 year old Khadija who was forced into marriage in 2014 aged only 14 is currently admitted at the Mandera General hospital with serious burn injuries inflicted on her by her so called husband.

Sharif Issack Abdulla beat her unconscious then burnt her using charcoal from a fire on January 7, 2015. He then kept her locked up in the house since then so that no one could see her.

However a relative went to visit and discovered her condition. They then asked for help to get her to hospital on 2nd May 2015 almost five months later.

The suspect had gone into hiding but has since been arrested.

Khadija’s chest and right hand are completely burnt. Still traumatized, she couldn’t say a word to journalists and broke into tears. Doctors said she urgently needs reconstructive surgery stating that the procedure will be very expensive.

The county government is said to be organizing for her to be airlifted to Nairobi for further treatment which includes reconstructive surgery.

Her transfer to Nairobi had initially been blocked by the county government which said the patient lacked proper documentation. This led to uproar from human rights officials and other Kenyans online.
