Why not your late lovers brother? Ann Thumbi supports Mariga

Ken Okoth’s death unearthed one of the biggest secrets a politician can ever leave behind. The bombshell was that the late Ken not only had an affair with a woman called Ann Thumbi but that they also had a son together.

The paternity of Thumbi’s son was confirmed last week after DNA tests taken proved that Ken had indeed sired Ann’s son. As if that wasn’t enough, Ann shocked many this week after she decided to support Mcdonald Mariga for the Kibra by-election, a seat that her late lover vacated with his death.

Ann Thumbi was spotted with Mariga when he presented his documents at the IEBC offices. The photos and video, which went viral, had tongues wagging with questions been asked as to why she wasn’t supporting Ken’s brother, Imran Okoth, who is also contesting the Kibra seat on an ODM ticket.

Observers online argued that since she had been in a relationship with Okoth who was in ODM, there would be no harm in supporting Imran.

In an interview with K24, Ann placed her relationship with the footballer in the proper context saying that considering her position as an MCA allied to Jubilee, it only made political sense for her to support a fellow party member.

I was nominated to the Nairobi County Assembly under the Jubilee Party. I, therefore, am obligated to stick with the party’s choice in the race for Kibra parliamentary seat. Jubilee’s choice, as of today, is Mariga, and I needed to show him my support.

She, however, declined to answer questions pertaining to her relationship with Ken’s brother and whether she would support his candidature, in the event Mariga is locked out.

The mystery of whether Ken Okoth and Ann Thumbi had a son has finally been solved. The DNA analysis has revealed that the boy is the late Ken Okoth’s son.

This news will come as a relief to Ann Thumbi Muthoni who went to court and sued on behalf of her son who she said was Okoth’s son.

4 reasons why wife-sharing was practiced by many African communities

Ken Okoth’s death late last month opened a can of worms about some African traditions that the Luo community and some other African communities used to practice in the past.

One of those practices was wife inheritance. What were the reasons for this practice that seems to have been passed by time and age? The practice is closely tied to polygamy and where polygamy was practiced it was common to find wife-inheritance as a by-product.

The reasons why wife inheritance was practiced are below;

Extending the bloodline of the departed kin through the brother’s lineage

This was done as a way of preserving the identity and bloodline of the departed kin and that the man’s memory would be remembered.

Ken Okoth cremation stopped after woman files court case

A way of taking care of widows and children

It is a widely held African belief that levirate marriage constitutes a means of taking care of widows. Levirate marriage is seen as a way of protecting both the widow and her children, who will be taken care of by the younger brother of the deceased.

At the time it was initiated, women were responsible for the house chores and men were the providers, therefore if the woman lost her husband, she would have no one to provide for the remaining family.

Keep wealth within the family

The practice was meant as a means for the widow to have someone to support her and her children financially and to keep her late husband’s wealth within the family bloodline. Because her in-laws would not want someone outside of the family’s bloodline to inherit her late husband’s estate, she was required to marry within the family.

A remedy against social exclusion

In many African cultures, it is the norm for an adult to be married and to have children, with marriage been termed as the backbone of African society. Single status in African cultures has a number of negative associations – one being witchcraft.

Single women have always been suspected of many evils, such as lack of feeling and a desire to break up other people’s marriages.

The difference between wills written by Kenyan men and women

It’s been quite a week, from Kenyans learning that the late Kibra MP Ken Okoth has a secret wife and son, who has been included in his will.

To Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko encouraging ladies to expose politicians they have children with. This has proved quite a tricky issue.

Maina and Mwalimu debated this topic, after Mwalimu accused women of deliberately leaving men out of their wills, while expecting to be beneficiaries in their husbands.

Women called in to challenge Mwalimu, and brought out the stark differences between a man and a woman’s will.

The only listed beneficiary in a woman’s will is her children, while in a husbands last testament comprises of side chicks, secret children and countless other people.

Do you agree with this?

Read the confessions below:

Maina started with his advise to women while answering Mwalimu’s question.

He said

A man who makes you cry, a man who cheats on you girls if he is in your will, remove him today shouted maina.

A woman narrated

heheeh I have four kids, I’m a manager, my kids are beneficiaries, weuh if I die he will use my wealth with another woman. Then my kids are left suffering, let him get his own wealth, and leave mine alone to my children, ati make him a beneficiary?NEVER, he is only next of kin, let him hustle for his, you know in the event that he dies I will be left taking care of these kids, plus mimi nikikufa I am very sure one month atatafuta mtu, so awachie zangu kwa watoto

Another woman concurred saying

How now tuwaongeze kwa will how now? Look here you can give him money alafu aende kufurahisha mwingine ! That’s why my money is for my kids only..

So girls, is your husband a beneficiary in your will?

Ladies, would you add your husband as a beneficiary in your will asks Maina

Ladies, should anything happen to you would your husband be a beneficiary in your will?

The death of Kibra MP Ken Okoth has caused a storm.

His side chick and their son emerged, bringing about the issue of wills and inheritance.

The ‘secret’ wife wanted her son recognized in his will and went to court to delay the burial.

The five-year-old son, whose pictures with Okoth have been shared online, is well known among Okoth’s close circle and family members.

Family sources corroborated to the Star that Okoth had been taking care of the child’s upkeep, including paying for his school fees at a high-end school in Nairobi.

Maina and Kingangi debated this highly emotive issue on Tuesday morning.

Mwalimu wanted to know if husbands are beneficiary’s in men’s will, just like they demand of husbands.

This was based on a male callers thoughts who asked

Why is it that women, and even a rich one at that don’t write us in wills? Why is it that when these women die, you never hear disputes over their wills? If we love each other, why can’t you include me in your will? They have money, have built homes, who are they leaving this wealth to?

Mwalimu excitedly played his Kayamba, as the man continued ranting.

Mwalimu says nowadays women have more money than men, practically

so in that case can we now say comfortably in the spirit of equality ata yeye aandike something for me as the loving husband, first of all wao huandikia nani?

Ask them where do they take their money, who do they write?

Maina asked the question that in turn generated a heated discussion.

My man has nine ‘secret’ children, woman confesses to Maina

The debate on why Kenyan men never reveal the kids they have had outside their marriage is trending in Kenya and for the wrong reasons.

This is after Governor Sonko revealed to the entire world that it’s indeed true that Ken Okoth had sired a son outside marriage.

Kenyans contributed on the topic and here is what one man had to say

I have a kid out of wedlock and my wife does not know.

Telling her would be a problem.

You just find yourself in this situations, the son is 7years.

I can never tell my wife, even if the other woman decides to pop up after I die well and good.

I won’t  be there to witness the drama.

A Kenyan woman goes in to confess that she is a victim of a man who is a womanizer.

I met him after high school and we got babies,my kids are 16-19.

We however did not get married.

woman crying.

He went ahead and got kids with 5 other women and the family knows.

If he was to die today atleast I will be recognized as the first wife.

She adds

I know all the kids and he takes care of them.

Even now I know the woman he is living with, out of all the six women I am the only one who has given him a girl.

That is why he can’t bear to leave me.

Another adds

I was dating this man and only found out he was married while I was pregnant.

The shocking thing is despite that he made me feel like I was the only woman I’m his life.

Shock on me,I came to find out he had 9 other kids.

when I was called and told he had died I just decided to keep off next I knew there would be drama.

In conclusion she advises

As a woman it’s up to you to decide how to react once you find out you are not the only one one.

‘He did the right thing’ Maina Kageni on Sonko revealing Ken Okoths ‘secret’

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko caught many by surprise during the memorial service of the late Kibra MP Ken Okoth, after announcing Ken had a ‘secret’ son.

Sonko, who seemed determined to let the cat out of the bag, stated that the son to Okoth was also named Okoth.

Adding it was only fit for his immediate family to stop pretending he does not exist.

Prominent radio personality Maina Kageni is however not impressed with Sonko’s outburst, arguing that that was not the right platform.

Was that the right platform to ropoka,

That is information the family had tried to keep away from the public.

Plus Okoth’s mother was also present.

Maina goes on to ask if Sonko did the right thing given that.

The outburst was not on the program .

No one expected thata his outburst hit peoPLE between the eyes.

In conclusion Maina says

People like Sonko have no reverse gear not brakes. I cannot keep a friend like him.

According to word on the street, Ken and his wife Monicah had trouble siring a child of their own.

The two had met while in college more than 20 years ago.

Okoth’s cremation/burial has been temporarily stopped until a decision is made by the court on the paternity of the child alleged to have been sired by Okoth.

Ken Okoth cremation stopped after woman files court case

Ken Okoth’s cremation will not be going as planned after a court-ordered that a case that had been filed by Ann Muthoni first be heard.

The court has stopped any burial or cremation until the case is heard and determined. Ann Thumbi Muthoni has sued on behalf of her son who she says is Okoth’s son.

Through lawyer Elkana  Mogaka Thumbi, Ann has sued Okoth’s mum Angeline Okoth and wife Monica Okoth along with Lee funeral home.

The order has been issued by Senior Principal Magistrate G.A. Mmasi. The case will be heard on August 9. At the moment the lawyers are going to serve Lee Funeral Home with the order.

Earlier today, The Star had established that the woman, a Jubilee-nominated MCA, approached Okoth’s family on Tuesday evening and demanded that her son be recognised before his ‘father’ is interred.

The MP’s European widow, Monica, is said to have got wind of the boy and opposed the idea of publicly recognising him. She and Okoth had no biological children but adopted three.

The widow is said to have protested attempts to have him mentioned in the MP’s funeral advertisement.

The advert was to be published in Wednesday’s dailies, but the push and pull on whether the child should be listed delayed the plan.

Sonko claims he witnessed Ken Okoth dating ‘other’ woman

Mike Sonko has the flair for the dramatic.

The Nairobi governor never ceases to amaze and today was no different.

He spoke today at the memorial service for Ken Okoth that took place at Moi Girls High School that is located near Woodley, where he dropped a bombshell.

Ken Okoth
Ken Okoth

He said that he knew and had witnessed Ken Okoth and nominated Jubilee MCA Ann Thumbi, dating. He told the cheering crowd that;

Mimi ni shahidi na walikuwa wanaenda out pamoja. (I am a witness that Ken and that woman were going out together…She is a widow and I sympathise with her at the moment.

He then added;

Let me talk the truth. Ken ameacha mtoto pia anaitwa Okoth…

That last remark resulted in rousing jubilation from the crowd that had attended the service.

The late Ken Okoths ‘other secret’ wife emerges

He has even released a full statement. It is below;

We all want to mourn our late Bro Hon. Ken Okoth and respect his family especially the mother. Ken was a diligent leader who did everything to uplift the lives of Kibra constituents and Nairobi in general.

However, even as we mourn, we are cognizant of the fact that Ken had a son with one of the nominated Nairobi County Assembly (MCA) members by the name Ann Thumbi alias Anita.

The two love birds did not hide the fact that they shared a son. Unfortunately today, Anita was stopped at the Lee funeral home as she took their son to pay last respect to his father. Who does that ?!.

In spite of denials from some members of the family, it’s clear that Ken recognised and was there for his son as demonstrated by pictures and various documented correspondences.

On 5th of July 2019, as the Governor of Nairobi, I received a text from one of Anita’s colleagues who said Anita was emotionally down and worried about the health of her son’s father, Hon. Ken Okoth.

The MP out of paternal love of his son had reportedly called her to ask her to take care of their son.

She then appealed to me to help them fly to Paris to visit the ailing Ken after ambassador Judy Wakhungu posted a picture of the late MP in a Paris hospital.

On the 6th I obliged to her appeal and asked them to send me copies of their passports. I proceeded to pay two tickets for the two to travel and also booked a hotel in Paris.

Fortunately, A few days later, as we waited for their Visa processing, MCA Doris, a colleague of Anita, sent me a text saying Hon. Okoth had returned to Kenya but appeared very weak. Thus the Paris trip aborted.

My humble appeal is that even as we prepare to bury Ken, let’s not forget his son.

He too needs and has a RIGHT to participate in the send-off of his beloved dad.

As such, it’s our duty to protect the right of the child.

As a leader, I offer my support to the family of the late Ken as they undergo a difficult moment of mourning a husband, a father, a son, a brother.

The family should accept
Hon. Okoth’s son enjoys legal protection and recognition #RIP Ken Okoth.

The late Ken Okoths ‘other secret’ wife emerges

A fresh controversy has rocked Ken Okoth’s family as a second ‘wife’ emerged with his five-year-old son.

The Star has established that the woman, a Jubilee-nominated MCA, approached Okoth’s family on Tuesday evening and demanded that her son be recognised before his ‘father’ is interred.

The family was meeting on Tuesday at Silver Springs Hotel along Vallely Road with the ODM leadership to give funeral details.

The son, whose pictures with Okoth have been shared online, is well known among Okoth’s close circle and family members.

The details of the ‘second family’ emerged as the controversy persisted over whether the lawmaker’s remains will be cremated or buried.

Opposition chief Raila Odinga on Wednesday chaired a crisis meeting with the family but only told the press, “The body will be handled in the same way as that of Kenneth Matiba.”

A close Okoth confidant, who requested anonymity, told the Star of the existence of the ‘second’ family and how the MP never shied from making it known that he is the father of the boy.

The source, who accompanied Okoth to Tetu, Nyeri county, to meet the woman’s parents, said the existence of the boy was an open secret known to both Okoth’s and the woman’s parents.

“Both the paternal and maternal grandparents have met the child and have lived with him for days. Ken loved the son very much and there is nothing in question,” the MP’s confidant said.

Okoth and his secret lover are said to have met in 2011 while the woman was working as a nurse at the Aga Khan Hospital, Nairobi, before she was nominated to the county assembly during the 2017 General Election.

At one time, the MP is said to have stayed together with the woman at a house along Ngong Road in Nairobi.

The revelations came just hours after Okoth’s mother Angelina Ajwang’ warned that her son did not father any child outside of her marriage with Monica.

“Ken did not sire any child. I know many women will come out to claim they have at least a child with Ken,” she told a local television station on Tuesday.

But the Star is in possession of an exclusive picture of Angelina with the five-year-old son at her Kibra home. Close family friends confirmed that the child is a  regular visitor to her home.

In the picture, Angelina is seen in a jovial mood showing her ‘grandson’ a story in a newspaper as the child kneels on the chair and looks on.

The source — who has been part of all funeral arrangement meetings — dismissed Angelina’s claim alleging she might have been coerced into making the statement.

“We are not in any way disputing whether the child will be given anything. What we want is that the family should not push this child into the background as if Ken never left any child. Let it be known that Ken left a son whom he loved very much,” he said.

He disclosed that the late MP included the child in his will and the family should respect his wishes.

“Ken has put that in the will. Ken has a will, and as I told you, I am Ken’s confidant. I am privy to the will. And the child is catered for in that will,” he added.

Another family source corroborated to the Star that Okoth had been taking care of the child’s upkeep, including paying for his school fees at a high-end school in Nairobi.

War On Cancer: List of prominent Kenyans who’ve died of Cancer

In a short time span, Kenya has lost two leaders – Kibra MP Ken Okoth and Bomet Governor Joyce Laboso – to cancer.

The two have joined a growing list of prominent Kenyans who have died of the disease that has no cure.

Some are also receiving treatment for various strains of the disease.

Over the seven weeks that Juja MP Francis Munyua was successfully treated for brain cancer in India early this year, he met 13 lawmakers also receiving chemotherapy for various cancers.

“So many people are suffering in silence from cancer. Nobody wants to talk about it because of the stigma,” Munyua said when he returned in March.

“In India, I met hundreds of cancer patients from Kenya alone. Among them were nine of my fellow MPs and four Senators,” he said.

Munyua was successfully treated, joining a small group of prominent Kenyans to go public about their cancer diagnosis and treatment.

Others were not lucky and went silently.

Since 2010, at least 10 prominent Kenyans have succumbed to various types of cancer, making it the main killer among leaders in that period.

1. One such prominent leader was Prof Wangari Maathai, who left quietly at night on Sunday, September 25, 2011, at the Nairobi Hospital Cancer Centre.

2. After Maathai’s death, former minister and MP for Kiambaa Njenga Karume followed. He died on Friday, February 24, 2012.

Karume’s death was caused by prostate cancer which had spread and had become impossible to manage.

3. Five years later, former Nyeri Governor Nderitu Gachagua was killed by pancreatic cancer at 64 years in February 2017.

4. Other well-known Kenyans include former TV presenter Janet Kanini who succumbed to lung cancer in March 2017 after a two-year battle.

5. Former Kitui West MP Francis Nyenze, 60, passed away in December 2017 after a 10-year battle with colon cancer.

6. In December the same year, Harvard professor Calestous Juma died after a two-year battle with cancer.

7. Former Baringo South MP Grace Kipchoim, 49, also passed away in April last year after succumbing to acute colon cancer.

Okoth was himself undergoing treatment for colorectal cancer in Paris and sent Tuju money after he had heard that his brother has passed away. He said;

Something very touching for me is that he suffered so long from cancer and he was very brave. When he heard that my own brother was suffering from cancer he reached out to me. When I lost my brother towards the end of last year, he even still had the strength and sacrifice to send me his own donation yet he was also suffering and paying for the expensive treatment.

He added that Ken lived to serve others, saying;

I have only good memories of him especially for what he did for the people of Kibra. He had personal knowledge of poverty. When his situation in life changed for the better, he spent a lot of life working and helping others.
