Swahili news anchor Kanze Dena is the latest Kenyan media personality to leave her media job and take up a state appointment.
In the last General election, we witnessed former journalists being elected as MP’s, Cabinet Secretaries,MCa’s among other positions.
Here is a list of media personalities who are giving politics a try.
1. Farida Karoney
The laid back Farida came into the lime light after her appointment as the Cabinet Secretary for Lands by President Uhuru Kenyatta. She is the former Chief Operating Officer at Royal Media.
Her appointment came as a surprise to many.
2. Kanze Dena
The soft spoken presenter has been appointed as Deputy State House Spokesperson and Deputy Head, PSCU. Her role includes taking leadership of the core communications teams, including digital, messaging, research, branding and press. With expansive newsroom leadership experience, Ms. Dena has been tasked to focus on the President’s brand positioning, media relations and messaging with respect to the delivery the Big Four agenda.
Kanze Dena is the astute and well-spoken Statehouse Spokesperson who has inspired Kenyans with her life story that can serve as a motivational movie.
One of the reasons that she has been able to grow and thrive the way she has is her faith. How has her new job title affected her, especially when it comes to serving her president and God?
In an interview with a local radio station, Kanze revealed that there were currently no sessions for Bible Study at the president’s residence but that the staff conducted their own fellowships. She added that she wasn’t able to attend the meetings due to the busy nature of her job;
I may not be able to attend the fellowship but I know the topics they discuss and also I brought my Bible to the office for personal reading.
She also added that since she took up the job, the National Anthem became part and parcel of her daily prayers, saying;
Now that I hear it (the National Anthem) over and over again it has become my personal prayer. It is what I actually use to pray for the country. The words are empowering and essentially what we thrive for as a nation.
Kanze is one of those people is a force to reckon with. A woman whose rise from the bottom to the top deserves an ode from us. In an interview with another local radio station “A story a Day”, she revealed that:
I went into some kind of depression. I felt unworthy for almost a year, I was battling self-esteem issues, seeing like God did want me to continue being Natasha’s mother. I was very hurt by the incident, after that, I came back to Nairobi and I was able to get admission to study Mass Communication.
The mother of one has since overcome her depression and today she is proud of who she is. After a lot of soul searching and digging deep into God’s word, she has been able to gain strength.
The past two years have been great for Kanze as she has got the highly desired State House spoke-person job and then got married this year.

Kanze Dena and Lulu Hassan have been the best friends for the 15 years they’ve worked in the media industry.
Lulu Hassan penned a heartwarming message to Kanze on her departure leaving many shading tears of joy.
Kanze got emotional during her send off party at her former place of work when she had to bid her friends good bye .
During the farewell she encouraged her fans with an encouraging post below and the battle is just beginning for her
“The Journey of life…its one that no one knows the destination… No idea where the meanders are… The bumps.. Potholes.. Smooth roads.. Valleys and the rivers… The one thing I know is that you and I just can’t give up now.. We have come tooo far from where we individually started from… No one said the road will be easy…. What I don’t believe my dears is that God has brought you and I this far to leave us. ..#MaryMary..
It’s been a roller coaster of emotions for Lulu Hassan and Kanze Dena.
Kanze Dena left Citizen TV officially yesterday (Sunday 10th) and her pals surprised her with with a cake. She couldn’t hold her tears back, and cried hysterically.
But it’s not all tears of sadness, as Lulu seems o have been hiding some good news all this time.
She gave an emotional speech that paid glowing tribute to Lulu her co-host of 15 years.
Kanze Dena was appointed the deputy head of the President’s Strategic Communication Unit (PSCU) as well as deputy State House spokesperson.
Talk about major moves 2018!
Mercy Masika serenaded Kanze during the farewell, as she also took pictures.
At the background of the picture was a heavily pregnant Lulu Hassan. In their weekend show, Lulu has been sitting in a weird way and if you have noticed they have been not been standing.
Lulu and Kanze always started the show while standing at a cocktail like table. That was the first sign. When they have the kanganga talk on the floor alongside Bi Mswafari, you could tell she was not comfortable.
Babies are a blessing. Lulu Hassan joins her fellow TV Girls such as Lillian Muli who is her colleague at Citizen, Smriti Vidyarthi of NTV and Janet Mbugua who quit Citizen TV. It is a season of babies!
Now that the secret is out, we wish her and her husband, Rashid Abdalla all the very best as they have their second child as a couple.
Yesterday was TV girl Kanze Dena’s last day at the Maalim Juma based media station.

Dena and her co-host Lulu Hassan brighten our living rooms while presenting news and their Nipashe Wikendi segment, where they invited relationship expert Bi Msafiri to talk about issues affecting marriage, educated us.
Well, last night Kanze Dena bid farewell to her supporters for being there for her for the last 15 years as a TV presenter.

The mother of one could not hide her joy and she broke into tears.
Kanze took this time to advice Kenyans, urging them to be faithful.
“Ukiwa mwaminifu kwa Mungu naye anakuwa mwaminifu kwako. Anakushika mkono unatembea naye. Wakati ameaanda mpango juu ya maisha yako, mpango huo atautekeleza ikiwa utamruhusu na kutembea naye.
Nimoeona uaminifu wa Mungu kuotka nilipoanza utangazaji wangu mpaka leo hadi kule ninakokwenda najua ni mkono wa Mungu.”
Lulu Hassan wrote a heartwarming letter to Kanze Dena wishing her all the best in her endeavors and she described her co-host as her best friend and prayer warrior.
“WHAT PEOPLE DO NOT KNOW ABOUT YOU IS THAT YOU ARE A PRAYER WARRIOR AND THAT YOU HARDLY DO ANYTHING WITHOUT TELLING ME ‘LULU ACHA NIOMBEE HILI JAMBO’..AND YOU HAD THOSE INSTINCTS LIKE…’ROHO YANGU HAITAKI HUYU RAFIKI YAKO..THERE IS SOMETHING ABOUT THIS PERSON WISH I HAD LISTENED EARLIER ON BUT BLIMEY SHOCK ON ME (STORY FOR ANOTHER DAY). I REMEMBER WHEN WE WERE ALL BEING POACHED FROM OUR RESPECTIVE COMPANIES TO JOIN ANOTHER WHICH WAS OFFERING SOME LOFTY AMOUNT, WE WERE ENTICED TO SAY THE LEAST BUT BOOM! IN YOUR TYPICAL KIND OF WAY YOU SAID ‘’MAMAA DON’T SIGN LET ME GO PRAY FOR THIS LETTER AND BY MORNING I WILL TELL YOU THE WAY FORWARD…AND TRUE TO YOUR WORDS YOU DROPPED THE BOMBSHELL ‘MUNGU AMEKATAA LULU’ …AND SLOWLY WE WENT BACK TO OUR RESPECTIVE COMPANIES BACK IN 2013,” read part of Lulu’s letter.
Kanze Dena has landed a new job at state House and we are so excited for her.
This means she will no longer be working with close pal Lulu Hassan on Citizen Tv Nipashe.
Kanze has a new gig as the deputy head of the President’s Strategic Communication Unit (PSCU) as well as deputy State House spokesperson. Don’t know what that is? Read on.
The Swahili presenter, considered a role model by many has worked for KTN, KBC, and Citizen.
Lulu Hassan has shared an emotional message about the two of them, leaving many wondering if there will be anyone to fill her big shoes.
She has narrated in part her life together with Kanze Dena;
“If you ask me about Gods ways, I will affirm that God works in mysterious ways. God favors his people. I know this to be true because I have seen it through our friendship, which, I think, was more accidental than intentional. Whichever way it came to be, I am grateful that you came along.
I remember us sitting and giggling nervously when the news was broken to us, that we were the top anchors in the country, 4 years in a row. 4 years of holding our breath, perusing through news of the day before going on air, holding frantic conversations and arguing on random things. Nobody knows what it is like to be an anchor like those who have to go through the process, driven, often by a strong desire to deliver nothing but the best. It felt, strongly so, that our audience had done an audit of our job. And they had given us another reason to rise and be the best we could ever be. It is not easy. You know. I know.
We both knew, and you said it over and over again, that it was the favorable hand of God. I cannot agree more.
Yet even with the knowledge, we never at one moment took it for granted. It was not ours to be boastful, or be comfortable. No. There is something about our profession that I cannot quite define, but I think it has to do with the fact that your real boss is the audience. And they have the final say on whether you stay. To meet their standards is hard work. But with you, the journey has been gratifying.
Then came your appointment yesterday by the President and the reaction that has followed….as we perused through the comments and congratulatory messages and the never ending calls and what was coming from your mouth was ASANTE MUNGU.
We have been friends for long for me to know what this comes down to. HUMILITY….. and never letting the “celebrity syndrome” be the driving force …See what has transpired now ?
We kept this news all under wraps for some time because our WHAT NEXT was haunting us as days passed by and yesterday it just dawned on me that woooahh this thing is real …after working together for about 5 years and a few months …I say thank you God for you know what we have been through and how our past looked like…
Lulu went ahead to narrate and even revealed how prayerful her partner has been. She will surely miss working with her.
“…pairing with you has been a blessing just as you always rightfully put it ..it worked both ways and I for sure knew your time is coming and that you are headed for greatness..Many would ask you ‘why aren’t you into the film industry like your friend and you would graciously tell them that that is not your calling and that God had plans for you but in different avenues….Alas!!…it came to pass
What people do not know about you is that you are a prayer worrior and that you hardly do anything without telling me ‘Lulu acha niombee hili jambo’..and you had those instincts like…’roho yangu haitaki huyu rafiki yako..there is something about this person wish I had listened earlier on but blimey shock on me (story for another day)I remember when we were all being poached from our respective companies to join another which was offering some lofty amount, we were enticed to say the least but BOOM ! In your typical kind of way you said ‘’mamaa don’t sign let me go pray for this letter and by morning I will tell you the way forward…and true to your words you dropped the bomb shell ‘MUNGU AMEKATAA LULU’ …And slowly we went back to our respective companies back in 2013. And trully God works in mysterious ways. A few days later ..I would receive a call from my mentor and boss Farida Karoney..’wewe Lulu uko wapi ?..hii ni story gani nasikia unaenda …?.tukutane hapo Nairobi West..and the next minute am with you as a colleague ..news that you did not believe until you saw me at Maalim Juma Road..at first adapting was not easy……but you made me feel welcome but at no point did any of us think that two females would be paired to do news together.. I recall vividly that election day we were thrown huko kwa deep end after realising that there were no intros on the autocue and no proper autocue…we prayed and said lets do this !!!!Good Lord for 3hrs we stood there talking to Kenyans and we personally did not know about the impact and chemistry we exhibited..but i remember Willis Raburu telling me that ..eeeh dada mmesalimiwa na watu wa Kisumu wamewapenda sana.”
“It would be followed by Waruru Wachira’s strong feeling that we were a good pair on screen. And just like that, that was the birth of the dynamic duo which I will forever be grateful to the entire RMS fraternity… The journey here has not been an easy one. You and I know that. I remember us having a hard time since we use the same tailor so obviously we would have dresses that were of the same shade and we would end up being matchy matchy and stuff and bosses were not so comfortable with it. What people did not know is that at no point would we decide what color to spot…etc but whatever we would carry from home would end up being matchy matchy… our makeup artists can attest to this… I celebrate you in so many ways. I will always remember how cautious you were about the length of your dress. How you would change many times over so that you had the right length on…’dadaa hii sitaki inanionyesha magoti…dadaa hii imenishika sana..dadaa hii nguo leo itabidi tumwambie director tukae kwa viti’That is Kanze for you !! She is the person who would go to great lengths to make sure that whenever am not well she is always there for me ..A case in point is when I gave birth to my second born who is 4years now she would do the daily visits.
You would bring your cousin Zakia Nzai and leave her with me for a while and you would come back and pick her up ..all this was just to make sure that I was well attended to..that’s sisterhood!!!… During Ramadhan you would fast with me na tufunguwe pamoja just when we are about to read our weekend bulletin still puzzles many….. Mine is a celebration of our friendship, urafiki wa dhati, the kind that is far beyond good chemistry on air.
But you know what as always we have each others back and we prepared well on the WHAT NEXT…And i can proudly say am in good hands...😚😚😚😚😚😚”
Citizen TV’s Kanze Dena is one proud mother who doesn’t shy away from sharing her family life with her adoring fans on social media.
The beautiful TV siren wowed her followers when she took to Instagram to share a list of conditions which her son, Amani laid down to her as he turned twelve years old.
As every teen growing up, there are things that our parents do out of love and care but back then we used to find them annoying or ’embarrassing’ since we thought we had outgrown them. For Amani, nothing is different.
According to Dena, her son woke up all excited after turning 12 and as a pre teen, he did not feel the need of being hugged severally, his mom being in control of his wardrobe as well as he no longer saw the need of being called baba or baby.
Read Kanze Dena’s post below.
Amani: ” Mum am officially 12 today a ‘PRE TEEN’ and some things need to change.. 1. No hugging hugging all the time.
2. Don’t call me baba/baby etc call me by name
3. I would like to have Control of my wardrobe… 4. Please allow me to have opinions and make decisions…. Am your son …but not a baby… Me: Sigh!
How fast he has grown… I can only thank God for thus far we have come…and I continue to profess Isaiah 11: 2 – 5 upon your life
HAPPY BIRTHDAY MWANAGU.
Kanze later posted a photo of the duo together thanking her online family for the positive birthday messages showered to his loving son.
The post read,

Many including Uhuru Kenyatta have condoled with Kanze Dena’s family and in his message, the president eulogized the late as a great man of this nation.
“IT IS WITH GRIEF AND A DEEP SENSE OF LOSS THAT I LEARNT OF THE DEATH OF MR. HARRY KITAO STEPHENS AND I CONVEY MY DEEP SYMPATHIES AND HEARTFELT CONDOLENCES TO HIS FAMILY, RELATIVES, AND FRIENDS. THE LATE MR. STEPHENS WAS FATHER TO KANZE DENA, ANCHOR OF ‘NIPASHE’ ON CITIZEN TV.”
Citizen TV’s Kanze Dena has for the first time introduced her ex-lover, the father of her son, Amani.
The multi-talented media personality together with her son and baby daddy went for a road trip in Nyeri county last weekend and she shared photos on social media, just to give us a sneak peek of what happened.
“Good morning from mama amani.. Amani and my co parent… .. Kibaridi jamani kitaniua mwanangwa wa jane Mebunda.. Interview manenoz for the ‘adolescent ‘ as he calls himself. Just wanna say Co-parenting works …unaweka Mungu Kwanzaa… Mtoto Mbele na tofauti zenu Kando. Ila najua Kwa wengine najua napigia mbuzi guitar!!😂😂
Haidhuru langu nishasema,” Kanze wrote.
The Swahili news anchor gave birth to two children; a son and a daughter but unfortunately the daughter passed away at a very tender age.
“THE SAD MEMORIES OF THE DEATH OF MY DAUGHTER REOCCURRED. CONSEQUENTLY, I WAS BURIED IN DEEP THOUGHTS. I WONDERED IF I’D MAKE A GOOD MOTHER, AND IF I’D GET MARRIED AFTERWARDS. MY RELATIONSHIP WITH MY BABY DADDY WASN’T GOOD AT THAT TIME. THE PERIOD WAS A TURBULENT ONE FOR ME.
MY MOTHER ALSO FELL SICK AROUND THAT TIME. SHE WAS DIAGNOSED WITH COLON CANCER, AND SHE NEEDED FINANCIAL SUPPORT. I WAS UNABLE TO SUPPORT HER AS I HAD JUST DELIVERED AMANI. SADLY MUM PASSED AWAY ON AUGUST 8, 2007. IT WAS A BIG BLOW! I WISH SHE WAS ALIVE TO SEE ME READ NEWS ON TV TODAY.”
Kanze Dena is a loving and caring mother to her 11-year-old son and she revealed that the young boy is her main source of strength.
“HE TELLS ME: “MUMMY, YOU ARE THE BEST MUM EVER!”
“THAT STATEMENT MELTS MY HEART! WHEN HE WAKES UP, HE COMES TO MY ROOM, GREETS ME AND INQUIRES ABOUT MY HEALTH. AMANI THEN HUGS ME AND TELLS ME HE LOVES ME. THAT HAS MADE ME FEEL STRENGTHENED.”
Is citizen TV’s Kanze Dena getting together with her ex-husband? This is what many are asking and we hope she will answer soon.
Other screen celebrities who enjoy co-parenting include sexy screen siren Lilian Muli, Stylish pastor Robert Burale among others.
