All eyes on Kanye West at Britain’s Glastonbury festival

Glastonbury, one of the world’s biggest music festivals, is facing angry criticism from some fans after rapper Kanye West was booked for the prime Saturday night headline slot.

Highlighting the five-day event’s popularity, 150,000 tickets costing £225 (315 euros, $360) each sold out in just 26 minutes when they went on sale in October before the line-up at Worthy Farm in Somerset, southwest England, was announced.

In total, 175,000 people will attend Glastonbury, which started in 1970 — when admission was £1, including free milk from the farm — and features hundreds of performances on dozens of stages from the mainstream to the downright bizarre.

But the presence of outspoken “Gold Digger” star West, who is married to reality TV star Kim Kardashian, has sparked controversy at an event known for its hippie roots.

Nearly 135,000 people have signed a petition to get him dropped.

The online petition against West — who has sold over 100 million downloads and albums worldwide and won 21 Grammy Awards, but is often criticised for self-aggrandising comments — says he should be kicked off the bill and replaced by “a rock band”.

“Kanye West is an insult to music fans all over the world,” the petition reads. “We spend hundreds of pounds to attend Glasto (the festival’s nickname), and by doing so, expect a certain level of entertainment.”

Emily Eavis, Glastonbury’s co-organiser and daughter of founder Michael Eavis, said she had even received death threats over the booking, adding the abuse had been “just horrible”.

“Kanye West is making the most exciting music at the moment,” she said last month.

“He is an amazing force as a performer. For us, getting the biggest star in the world was an amazing coup.”

West is not the first US hip-hop star to headline Glastonbury. In 2008, Jay-Z attracted similar objections but drew one of the festival’s largest-ever crowds and won rave reviews for a set which riffed on the opposition he had faced from some fans.

Preparations for the festival were hit last week by the withdrawal of Foo Fighters from the Friday night headline slot after frontman Dave Grohl broke his leg by falling off stage while performing in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Florence + The Machine were swiftly promoted up the bill to replace them.

Emily Eavis said: “There was only one person we wanted to call and that was Florence.”

Other big names set to perform include The Who, Pharrell Williams, Motorhead, Mary J. Blige, Mark Ronson, Lionel Richie, Patti Smith, The Chemical Brothers, Alabama Shakes and Hozier.

For many people, Glastonbury is about more than just the music, with a wealth of areas on the 900-acre (four square kilometre) site devoted to everything from circus to cabaret and even a “free university”.

“There will be enlightenments, awakenings, surreal happenings, Damascene epiphanies and people doing the strangest things in public,” the organisers promise on the festival website.

Glastonbury has kept its traditional political activist tinge even as it has evolved into a major business over the years.

Russian punk protest band Pussy Riot will be holding a discussion event on one of the stages, while charities Greenpeace, Oxfam and WaterAid receive a donation from organisers and have volunteers on site.

The festival is also family friendly and many older fans bring their children to camp with them on site.

This year, youngsters will be treated to a special guest appearance by physicist and mathematician Professor Stephen Hawking in the Kidz Field area.

Glastonbury — whose site is a working farm for the rest of the year — often descends into a mudbath thanks to the heavy rainfall which can persist into the British summertime.

Festival goers this year will be relieved to note that conditions are forecast to be mostly dry.

Kanye West’s daughter gets baptised in Jerusalem

North West has been given a highly traditional baptism in Jerusalem by her otherwise boundary-pushing parents.

The ceremony took place at St. James Cathedral, a 12th century Armenian Church in the old walled city, which is decorated with blue and white tiles made by Armenian artists in the 18th century.

Dozens of fans had gathered outside the ornate building to catch a glimpse of the well-heeled family.

West, Kardashian and their 22-month-old toddler were joined by the reality star’s sister Khloe Kardashian in the church.

North and her father dressed in matching white outfits, while Kardashian wore a long crinkle pleated beige and peach coloured dress.

Their trip to Israel followed a five-day trip around Armenia, where the Kardashians’ ancestors are from.

Kanye west also held a free show in Armenia that was later cancelled as he decided to jump into water and some of the attendees joined him.

He was later taken out by the police who then shut down the venue.

Jay Z launches music streaming service – Tidal

Jay Z has officially launched his new music streaming service, named Tidal, with the help of some of the biggest names in entertainment.

Madonna, Rihanna, Beyonce, Kanye West and Alicia Keys are among the A-list celebrities who co-own Jay Z’s new venture.

Tidal is the first artist-owned platform for music and video.

It hopes to address musicians’ concerns that they are losing out financially in an age of music downloads and booming streaming services.

Speaking at the launch event in New York, Keys said Tidal aims to “forever change the course of music history”.

The co-owners – who also include Daft Punk and Jack White – lined up on stage to sign a declaration of a “whole new era”.

“Our mission goes beyond commerce, it goes beyond technology. Our intent is to preserve music’s importance in our lives,” Keys said.

Tidal is likely to face tough competition from existing streaming services like Spotify. Both Spotify and Tidal are membership-based services.

For $19.99 (Sh 1,800) a month, subscribers are able to access to millions of songs and videos which users can stream or listen to offline.

Tidal is available in 35 countries around the world.

Amber Rose set to tell secrets about Kim Kardashian in new book

Amber Rose has kept quite over the years regarding her ex-beau Kanye West.

The model is not planning on being so kind to his wife  Kim Kardashian.

Amber apparently knows a lot of the reality star’s dirty laundry, and plans to air it out in her upcoming memoir, How To Be A Bad Bitch! .

The vixen had a public spat on twitter with Khloe Kardashian over her younger sister’s relationship with rapper Tyga.

The twitter row went on to a point of name calling and the use of graphic images from  their past lives.

We’ll just have to wait and see what will be in the book.

Kanye, Beckham mourn tutor as London Fashion Week opens

London Fashion Week opened Friday on a sombre note, as Kanye West and Victoria Beckham joined some of the leading lights of the British industry at a memorial to inspirational tutor Louise Wilson.

In honour of Wilson’s passion for riding, a model wearing a black top hat, veil, jacket and trailing skirt by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen stood guard on a horse outside St Paul’s Cathedral as 1,300 guests mourned inside.

The catwalk schedule was suspended for the morning to remember the straight-talking 52-year-old, who was director of the fashion course Central Saint Martins (CSM) college for 12 years until her death last May.

Wilson’s alumni read like a roll call of London’s most talented designers, from the late McQueen to Stella McCartney, and many joined the family and friends in paying tribute.

Former students Christopher Kane, Louise Goldin, Simone Rocha and Roksanda Illincic all spoke at the ceremony, which was also attended by designer Roland Mouret, milliner Stephen Jones and Net-a-Porter founder Natalie Massenet.

Beckham, the former Spice Girl turned fashion designer, was among the guests as was West, the US rapper and Wilson’s friend who wore a white jacket over black jeans.

As well as those who launched their own labels, countless other Wilson graduates went on to staff the studios of the world’s big fashion houses.

Alber Elbaz, the creative director of Lanvin who said the students Wilson sent him were “always the best”, gave an address at the service.

“The wonderful thing about Louise was her ability to pick people and to train them,” Suzy Menkes, international editor of Vogue, told AFP.

“She was tough, she wasn’t an easy person, but the designers now say they were so pleased that she brought them out and made them themselves.”

In the evening many of the guests will head to the graduate show by current Central Saint Martins students.

“These are the last we’ll ever see that have been picked by Louise Wilson herself so I think that will also be a very emotional moment,” Menkes said.

– Avant-garde designer returns –

Central Saint Martins, which also counts John Galliano among its alumni, is the only college to have a London Fashion Week show and is crucial to the city’s reputation as the place to find new talent.

Many of the graduates leave as they grow more successful but more and more are returning as London’s reputation as a commercial as well as creative centre grows.

Fashion now contributes £26 billion ($40 billion, 35 billion euros) directly to the UK economy, according to new figures from the British Fashion Council, up from £21 billion in 2009.

About 5,000 buyers and journalists are expected for the five-day event, which falls between New York and Milan fashion weeks, and kicked off with shows by South Korean-born designers J. JS Lee and Eudon Choi.

This season will see the hotly anticipated return of Wilson graduate Gareth Pugh, the avant-garde designer famed for his conceptual, otherworldly clothes, often inspired by clubwear.

He normally shows in Paris but is returning to his native country to mark 10 years since he launched his eponymous label.

A retrospective of his work is currently running at an exhibition space in Covent Garden.

After last season’s one-off presentation in New York, which saw dancers writhing in a cavernous, fog-filled space, much is expected of Pugh’s show on Saturday night at the V&A museum.

He is among 78 designers showing this season, including J.W. Anderson on Saturday, Topshop Unique, Paul Smith and Vivienne Westwood Red Label on Sunday and Burberry Prorsum and Christopher Kane on Monday.

Elegance at Ralph Lauren, with Kanye in front row

American design royalty Ralph Lauren headlined the last day of New York Fashion Week on Thursday with brown and gray elegance in cashmere and shearling, and menswear-inspired tuxedo suiting for evening.

Rapper Kanye West was the self-invited guest of honor, mobbed by photographers as he took his seat to watch the study in classic American beauty — while dressed in cargo pants and a bomber jacket, and chewing gum.

But he looked delighted to be there, greeting a star-struck Chirlane McCray, wife of the New York mayor, posing for photographs and getting a picture on his own cell phone with Lauren and his wife after the show.

Lauren presented a long, refined silhouette in brown and gray, with dashes of black, white and cream. The designer, who refuses to use real fur, sent models down the runway in shearling hats, coats, stoles and cuffs.

Cashmere was ubiquitous — in turtlenecks, cable-knit skirts and sweaters.

Feminine touches came in an embroidered chiffon skirt with feathers, and beaded georgette, and there were cowboy influences in wide-brimmed hats, fringes and tassels.

For evening, Lauren offered tuxedo-inspired trouser suits, tailored to trace the contours of a woman’s body, complete with watch-chains and dress shirts, and georgette or tulle-beaded evening gowns.

The 75-year-old designer came out to rapturous applause at the end, kissed his wife and shook West’s hand, and walked the length of the runway dressed in his own label’s jeans and a plaid shirt.

West has been one of the major celebrity attractions at Fashion Week, grabbing headlines one day by unveiling a collection for Adidas, and then when his 20-month-old daughter North erupted in tears in the front row.

But there was no sign of his reality star wife Kim Kardashian or their daughter at Ralph Lauren, a sophisticated affair and one that is done twice to reach as many fashionistas as possible.

Lauren told AFP after the show that West had wanted to come.

“He asked to come and I’ve met him before and I was glad to have him,” he said. He smiled when asked if he had caught West’s Fashion Week debut for Adidas. “No I didn’t get a chance, busy working,” he said politely.

Lauren told reporters that it was a “very sexy” collection that emphasized “very sharp black silhouettes.”

Unlike some younger designers at Fashion Week, Lauren kitted out his woman for fall/winter 2015 in warm fabrics, and he stressed the use of cashmere and fur-like hats made from shearling as practical in cold weather.

The Ralph Lauren show is one of the last before Fashion Week ends on Thursday. Here is a look at other highlights:

– 1940s –

Uber-cool American label Proenza Schouler sought to create clothes with freedom, unveiling a collection inspired by the late 1940s in the former Whitney Museum building on Madison Avenue.

“That was very much our approach this season, going into our fittings just working with some classic kind of shapes,” said designer Jack McCollough.

“Going in, cutting things and adding panels, let them fall, kind of let them do their thing. Taking dresses that would seem otherwise quite constricted and going and slashing,” he added.

– Hippy chic –

Anna Sui sent a beautifully choreographed collection down the runway with a 1970s hippy vibe, a riot of color and texture with quirky sunglasses, diver-style goggles and knitted Viking hats.

The models strutted down the catwalk to the tunes of Abba and the “Queen of the Night” aria from Mozart’s “The Magic Flute.”

Kanye West’s Ex hits out at his wife and sisters

Kanye West’s ex Amber Rose said that  rapper Tyga ,25, should be “ashamed of himself” for dating a 17 year old girl who happens to be Kylie Jenner .

This statement was reportedly made during an interview and she was quoted saying “[Kylie’s] a baby, she needs to go to bed at 7 o’clock and relax.”

Amber, continued: “That’s ridiculous, Tyga should be ashamed of himself. That’s how I feel. For sure. He has a beautiful woman and a baby and left that for a 16-year-old who just turned 17.” This was in reference to Blac Chyna who is Tyga’s ex.

The comments brought a heated exchange between Amber and Kylie’s sister Khloe on twitter.

The Most Liked Instagram Photo Of 2014 Was…

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s first kiss as man and wife was the most liked Instagram photo of 2014. Accruing a whopping 2.4 million likes, Kimye’s smooch at their wedding in Italy has proved to be the most popular Insta snap of the year. We can’t say we’re surprised – the rapper admitted that he and his new wife spent a good chunk of their honeymoon editing the photo.

He said: ‘Let me tell you something about that kiss photo that my girl put up … this was pissing my girl off during the honeymoon, she was exhausted because we worked on the photo so much because Annie Leibovitz pulled out right before the wedding. I think that she was, like, scared of the idea of celebrity’.

‘Because Annie pulled out, I was like, “Okay, I still want my wedding photos to look like Annie Leibovitz,” and we sat there and worked on that photo for, like, four days because the flowers were off-color.’
