Sonko promises ‘pregnant’ Anne Waiguru free delivery at Pumwani

Mike Sonko is one politician who knows how to keep his name in the spotlight just like celebrities Vera and Willy Paul. This past weekend, the good governor decided to add onto some of the congratulatory messages that Kirinyaga governor Anne Waiguru was receiving after her nuptials.

And his was probably the best and the most memorable. His message was noteworthy as it was a tongue in cheek blessing by the governor to his Kiringaga colleague about the future child she might have.

Governor Anne Waiguru getting married next month!

Anne Waiguru and her lover Kamotho Waiganjo have settled on July 13, next month as the day they will exchange their vows to officially become husband and wife.

The powerful couple will solemnise their marriage in a Kikuyu traditional wedding ceremony known as Ngurario which will take place at Kiamugumo Primary School in Kirinyaga county.

Waiganjo asked for the governor’s hand in marriage early this year the high-end Lord Erroll hotel. She was surprised at the suddenness of his proposal but did not reject him. She said about the nature of the proposal;

It was a surprise because we had not seriously talked about making things formal. It was his birthday and we were with few close friends as usual. I was irresistibly shy. I said yes because I know he is a man deeply rooted in God.

On February 16, 2019, the two had a colourful ruracio (traditional engagement) ceremony held at her home Kiamungo village, Kirinyaga county.

The dowry negotiation deal went on successfully in a ceremony that was a closely guarded affair with photo access being restricted.

Under the Kikuyu tradition, the ngurario is the final part of the community’s wedding and is meant to formalise the marriage. The woman is usually considered taken and becomes part of her husband’s family once the ceremony is done.

Traditionally, the ceremony, which does not have to take place in a church, happens before the woman can be allowed to go to the man’s place.

Ngurario normally starts with the slaughtering of a goat by the groom and his relatives and friends at the bride’s place. The knife used in slaughtering the animal is provided by the soon-to-be mother-in-law, but there is a twist, the mother-in-law must be enticed with a gift before she can give out the knife. The animal’s meat is then roasted.
