Moses Otieno Kajwang named Homabay ODM candidate

After much anxiety and debate, the ODM board   finally announced the much awaited announcement today, ending days of speculation and anxiety among eight candidates gunning for the ODM ticket.

They named the Late Otieno Kajwang’s brother Moses Otieno as the preferred flag bearer for the Homabay seat.

A member of the elections board told the Star in confidence, “It has been no easy task to identify a successful candidate” for the senatorial race, given the roles each has played for the party.

“We are all set to go. After analysing several items on the table and consulting widely, we shall unveil Moses tomorrow [Tuesday] as the ODM candidate for the Homa Bay by-election,” the commissioner confided to the Star.

“All the candidates are equally qualified. Remember each of them has in one way or the other contributed in great ways to the party or its leader. We had to make a hard decision.”

Homa Bay ODM official attacked by youths for endorsing Raila for senate seat

A section of Homa Bay youths attacked acting county ODM chair Monica Amollo on Monday as she tried to endorse Raila for the Senate seat.

The youths attacked Amollo at Homa Bay Tourist hotel where she led several delegates in the botched endorsement.

Amollo however denied that the incident occurred at a press briefing at the ODM office in Homa Bay town.

“Looking at me, do you think I can be chased from a hotel? I just went for breakfast but I do not know about the incident,” posed Amollo.

Amollo and the delegates endorsed Raila as a suitable candidate for the seat during the press briefing.

In a statement read by ODM’s Kasipul Kabondo branch secretary general, Ronix Odida, the delegates argued that Raila as senator would protect the devolution he championed.

Raila however declined to vie for the seat at a press conference in Nairobi on Monday, saying he wants to concentrate on “the bigger task” of revamping ODM.

Kajwang’s brother seeks to take over as Homa Bay Senator

Otieno Kajwang’s 35-year-old younger brother has declared interest in the Homa Bay County senatorial seat.

“My community has requested me to represent them to complete my late brother’s development projects,” Moses Otieno told the Star on phone on Wednesday,

Otieno said he is currently finalising consultations with the people of the county and that he will soon make a public announcement.

“I have been involved in political mobilization during the 1997, 2002 and 2007 elections in Mbita Constituency and the 2012 elections in Ruaraka Constituency,” he said of his qualifications.

“Like the late Senator Kajwang’, I am a strong believer in education and religion and I continue to provide personal support and contributions to churches and schools across the country,” he continued.

ODM MPs propose Raila should succeed Kajwang’

Homa Bay leaders want Cord leader Raila Odinga to fill the vacant county senatorial seat following Otieno Kajwang’s death.

Nyatike MP Omondi Anyanga, speaking on behalf of the MPs, said Raila is the only politician who is capable of replacing Kajwang who died two weeks ago.

“We as the leaders of Homa Bay county want former Prime Minister Raila Odinga to honour Kajwang by contesting for the Homa Bay Senatorial seat,” Anyanga said at a press conference in Nairobi on Wednesday.

“My first choice for Homa Bay senator is the former prime minister Raila Odinga,” Kibera MP Kenneth Okoth posted on his Twitter account.

This comes after the IEBC on Monday set February 2 as the day for the Senate seat by-election.

The law of Kenya requires that a by-election be held within 90 days from when a seat is declared vacant.
