Woman’s body found dumped in cattle dip with stone hanging from waist in Murang’a

A woman’s mutilated body was found dumped in an abandoned cattle dip at Maragi village in Kiharu, Murang’a county on Friday.

The decomposed body was found with the hands chopped off and a stone hanging from its waist. Area chief James Muiruri said the woman’s identity is yet to be established.

He said she may have been from a neighbouring village since nobody had been reported missing in Maragi. Muiruri said abandoned cattle dips in the area have become hazardous.

Resident James Gichangu noted that the villagers use other pest control methods. A man was murdered by unknown people who stabbed his face and throat several times with a knife in Mathioya on January 28. A pastor was also beheaded in Kahuti village, Kiharu.

Residents decried the rising insecurity in the area following the incidents and asked for a thorough probe. Police said investigations have been launched.

Dad who let baby die in hot car as he smoked weed jailed

A dad who let his 10-month-old foster daughter die in a hot car as he smoked weed and watched Game Of Thrones has been jailed for almost three years.

Seth Jackson, 29, admitted the involuntary manslaughter of Kadillak Poe-Jones but begged a judge not to jail him, saying “I’m not a monster”. He had originally been charged with murder.

Police said Jackson left the baby in a vehicle in Wichita, Kansas, for several hours on July 24 as temperatures in the city hovered around 32 degrees Celsius.

Jackson had picked up marijuana from a dealer and then returned home. He started using the drug without taking Kadillak out of the car, prosecutors said.

Jackson told police he forgot the girl was in the car and only realised when he saw a child on the Game Of Thrones episode he was watcing.

The teaching assistant rushed back to the car, but Kadillak was dead.

An autopsy has revealed that Kadillak – who Jackson had been fostering since she was two-weeks-old – died from hypothermia due to heat exposure.

Indian man arrested for trying to bury daughter alive

Indian police have arrested a man for allegedly trying to bury alive his 9-year-old daughter in the northeastern state of Tripura, police said Saturday.

Neighbours alerted the police after they saw Abul Hussain trying to bury his daughter in a pit on Friday in the backyard of his residence in Putia village in Sipahijala district, local police official Uttam Bhaumick said over the phone.

“The neighbour said Abul Hussain tied the girl’s hands, taped her mouth and buried her till her neck,” Bhaumick said.

The man was arrested and charged with attempted murder.

The girl was admitted to hospital and her condition was serious, Bhaumick said.

The girl’s mother was not at home when the incident took place. Police cited neighbours saying Hussain disliked having a girl.

Many Indian families consider girls as economic burdens and sons as breadwinners, which leads to abortions of female foetuses or discrimination against girls by denying them access to education.

South Africa prosecutors win bid to appeal Pistorius conviction

South African prosecutors on Wednesday won their bid to appeal the culpable homicide verdict handed down to athlete Oscar Pistorius for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp and will now seek a murder conviction.

The decision could leave Pistorius open to a prison sentence of at least 15 years if he is convicted of murder.

“I cannot say the prospect of success at the Supreme Court is remote,” Judge Thokozile Masipa said in granting the appeal.

The Olympic and Paralympic track star, aged 28, is currently serving prison time after being convicted in October of culpable homicide after a seven-month trial.

Pistorius lawyers to oppose state leave to appeal

Lawyers for paralympian Oscar Pistorius have filed papers opposing the State’s application to appeal his culpable homicide conviction and sentence.

One of Pistorius’s lawyers Brian Webber confirmed this on Friday but declined to say on what grounds the appeal would be opposed.

“The grounds are contained in the documents,” he said.

On Tuesday, the National Prosecuting Authority announced that it had filed an application for leave to appeal Pistorius’s conviction and sentence.

The appeal against his conviction was based on a question of law, spokesman Nathi Mncube said at the time.

Mother buries alive her one day old child in Migori County

A day-old baby girl miraculously held onto her life on Monday after being pulled out of a shallow grave where she had been buried alive by her mother in Migori County.

The toddler, who is now recovering at Migori referral hospital, was rescued by boys herding animals just a few minutes after her mother wrapped her delicate live body in a carton and buried in a shallow grave in a nearby thicket.

According to Kawere Two sub-location assistant chief Joseph Migoya, the suspect, identified as Alice Ong’ola, 35, has been arrested and will be arraigned in a Migori court on Tuesday to answer charges arising from the offence.

Chief Migoya said the boys alerted him of the bizarre discovery leading to the rescue of the child in a freshly dug shallow grave at Rombe Village at around 5pm.

“The child is now recuperating in the incubator at the Migori referral hospital where doctors immediately resuscitated her moments after she was delivered to the hospital,” said chief Migoya.

Mother drowns self and three children in Bureti river

A woman and her three children drowned last Friday in Chemosit River, Buret subcounty, Kericho county.

Kishiara location chief Richard Ngeno said Lillian Chelangat, 26, had been complaining of neglect by her husband. Ng’eno said Chelangat complained that at times the family slept hungry for lack of food.

Chelangat had left her husband’s Kapkelei home in Belgut subcounty for her matrimonial home in Kishiara. Speaking to the press in Kishiara on Friday, Ngeno told the press that Chelangat threw her children into the river before drowning herself.

“She also quickly turned against the second born boy and as she struggled to toss him into the river somebody spotted her but efforts to restrain her from drowning the boy were too late and she managed to push the boy into the fast-flowing river,” Ngeno said. He said the bodies had not been retrieved by Sunday.

Son beheads mom in Long Island then commits suicide

A college professor has been brutally beheaded by her mentally-ill son, who left her body in the middle of the street before taking his own life by jumping in front of a train.

The decapitated body of Patricia Ward, a 66-year-old associate professor of language arts at Farmingdale State College, was found outside her complex by neighbours and onlookers who thought it was a Halloween prank.

She had broken ribs and had been stabbed repeatedly; her head was found 5 feet from where her body lay in the street.

Horrified onlookers told the New York Post they were traumatised by the incident and said they may need therapy as a result of seeing a beheaded body on the street.

A cab driver said he “got sick” after seeing the woman’s disembodied head and quickly sped away.

Migori woman killed by husband on matrimonial bed

A woman was on Wednesday morning found dead on her matrimonial bed in Migori town.

It is alleged that the 29 year-old was killed by her husband who then escaped a few hours after he was seen escorting their two children to school.

The body was discovered by neighbours at around 8am. The neighbours said the couple had spent most of the previous night quarreling.

“We found the body lying on the bed after we went to check on what might have happened in the house. We became suspicious when the door remained closed for long hours,” one of them said.

A man-hunt had been launched to arrest the woman’s husband who is the suspect in the case.

The killing comes soon after two other murder cases in Migori town. A few days ago, a woman hacked her co-wife to death and a man suspected to be a serial killer last month murdered a 19 year-old university student girl he had checked into a lodging with.

Mother who killed and froze her newborn babies gets 35 years

A woman convicted of killing two of her newborn babies and keeping their bodies in freezers received a 35-year jail sentence in Spain on Wednesday, her lawyer said.

The 37-year-old mother, named by Spanish newspapers as Sara Lopez Hernandez, “denied killing the babies”, her lawyer Manuel Caballero told AFP.

A court in the southern city of Seville handed her a 35-year jail term, after a jury had found her guilty on September 17.

The court also ordered her to pay 300,000 euros ($384,000) in compensation to her ex-husband and her three living children.

Lopez went on trial after her husband found the babies in freezers in their home near Seville in 2012. Autopsies showed they had died by suffocation.

State prosecutors had demanded a 40-year jail term, branding her “a monster of a mother”.

My husband killed our son to save him from demons – Esther Arunga

During Esther Arunga’s bail hearing on Friday, the Brisbane Magistrates Court was informed  she changed her story to investigators. She sent faxes saying she believed her husband was mentally ill and had attacked their child,  Sergeant Scott Pearson a prosecutor told the court.
