When Kenyans successful in Hollywood are mentioned Lupita nyong’os name is on every ones lips and with good reason. She put Kenya on the map in Hollywood. Before her rise to fame were other great actors. They may not be as big as the oscar winning actress, but they have managed to set a name for themselves in the international market. Here’s a list.
1. Edi Gathegi
Edi is a Kenyan born American based actor who has appeared in severaL TV shows and films. The 36-year old actor was born in Eastlands Nairobi but studied in the USA. He is known for his role in X-Men First Class, Gone Baby, Crank, The Twilight Saga, Beauty and the Beast.
2. Oliver Litondo
Oliver is a Kenyan actor born in Kakamega. He studied in the United States and was a tv presenter before venturing into acting. Litondo is known majorly for his role starring Kimani Maruge in the movie The First Grader. He has also starred in Sheen: Queen of the Jungle, Ivory Hunters, The Search for the Nile and The Bush Trackers.
3. Charles Gitonga Maina
He is best known for his co-starring role in The Air Up There where he plays Saleh. He has also made guest appearances in the series Lost land.
4. Benjamin Ochieng’
He was born and raised in Nairobi but went to study computer science in USA. He ventured into music and art later and finally got into acting. His most notable works are playing Reverend Jude in the movie God’s not dead and in his role is the movie Kwame and the 2003 film Tears of the sun. He has also starred in the movie Default.
5. Lupita Nyong’o
Nyong’os debut in Hollywood was through Steve McQueen’s historical drama 12 Years a Slave in 2013. She won an Oscar for the best supporting actress in 2014. Her rise to fame has not stalled since, she was voted by People magazine as the most beautiful woman and her featured in several other magazine covers. In Kenya, Lupita is remembered in the sex, money and party TV series Shuga. She is currently in Kampala shooting her next film ‘Queen of Katwe’.
