“I walked out of the relationship immediately. If he was cheating on me with a woman, maybe I could have understood. But that my husband was the ‘woman’ in our own bedroom no way!”

This is the confession of Jane Muigai (not her real name).

Jane (37) discovered that her husband was a closet homosexual after 15 years and three lovely children.

“It was in 2015  when a missed flight at the airport saw me returning home. On arrival, I  was confronted by the reality of my man’s double life,” she recounts.

She said her seeing her then  ‘love of her life’ having a romp with another man left her speechless, sick and confused.

Asked whether she had her suspicions before?

“Well, most of his phone conversations were with men. We also had not had intercourse in years but it did not occur to me he would be gay,” she said.

Jane said her husband was a ‘staunch’ Christian who strongly condemned any hint of homosexuality.

Four years after the breakup, Jane boasts of a better relationship.

“I am happily remarried. This time I am very keen. Once bitten twice shy,” she said.

OLDER WOMEN

The revelation can be particularly difficult for older women who imagined a peaceful retirement, spending their golden years alongside their partner, enjoying visits from grandchildren.

For Mary Akinyi (not her real name) she decided to stay in the relationship.

Akinyi (57) discovered his husband was gay in 2013 after 22 years in marriage.

“We have not had sex in years, but I cannot leave him. I also love my children and I can never think of telling them that their father, whom they look up to and love, is gay,” she said.

Despite an outward display of being a happy family woman, deep inside Akinyi is afraid he may never find real love.

As a 57-year-old straight woman in a heterosexual marriage, she has resigned himself to meeting people who want to blackmail her with threats of exposing her husband’s secret something which she says has happened on three occasions.

MEN VICTIMS TOO

It is not just married women who discover their spouses playing for the wrong team. Men too have caught their wives red-handed with women lovers.

Mark Mutiso (not his real name), discovered that the woman he was cohabiting with and considering tying the knot with was actually turned on by other women.

“We had to call it quits since I  did not want drama in my life. Where I am fighting fellow ladies for a woman,” Mutiso said.

ONE BIG HAPPY FAMILY

Whereas Mutiso could not share his woman with another woman, Kevin (not real name), a chef, does not mind a three-way relationship with his Burundian wife, Diana.

Kevin who runs a restaurant in one of Nairobi’s leafy suburbs has no qualms when his wife brings women to their matrimonial bed.

“It spices up our intercourse life and besides, which man would resist two women in his bed,” poses Francis.

“I don’t think this is cheating because my wife does the hunting,” he adds.

Moving forward

As partners ‘come out’, many partners find themselves shoved in the closet. Experts advise that one should seek immediate counselling services.

That being said, if you are hoping for a boy, there are some ways to improve your odds. Here are five ways to improve your chances of having a boy:

  • The Billings method
  • A diet to help you conceive a boy
  • The Shettles method
  • Avoiding intercourse before ovulation
  • Sperm spinning and genetic testing

1. Conceiving a Boy Using the Billings Method

This method involves becoming very familiar with the way your cervical mucus feels in the days leading up to ovulation and then after ovulation. While the mucus is generally dry and sticky during most of a woman’s menstrual cycle, it gradually changes as ovulation nears.

The method was shown in a study to help couples pre-select the gender of their baby when they timed intercourse based on mucus texture.

To use the Billings method to conceive a boy, follow these steps:

  1. Check your mucus. Take notice of how your va**nal area feels throughout a menstrual cycle. When do you feel wetter, with more watery mucus? When your vagina feels wetter and the mucus has the texture of egg whites, ovulation is about to happen.
  2. Find your peak day. Your most fertile day is your “peak” day. This is the last day that you will have fertile (i.e., egg white or watery) cervical fluid or a wet or slippery vaj. Identify this day in your cycle.
  3. Have bedminton on or after your peak day. Avoid having intercourse before your peak day. Have intercourse on or after your peak day.

2. A Diet to Help You Conceive a Boy

Since male sperm prefer a more alkaline environment, it’s important to make sure you get plenty of the right foods in your diet when trying to conceive. Here are some suggested foods and other ideas.

  1. Eat alkaline foods-Some great ones are apricots, figs, cantaloupe, cherries, fresh lemons,hulled wheat bread, lentils, avocado, royal jelly, pine nuts, almonds, carrots, orange juice, red radish, fresh red beets, alfalfa grass, barley grass, sprouted seeds, and tomato sauce, wheat grass.
  2. Eat a good breakfast-Higher calorie diets that provide more energy have been shown to increase the odds of conceiving a boy. Specifically, eating breakfast cereal appears to boost energy and boost the chances of having a boy.
  3. Eat more sodium and potassium-When used in combination with timing intercourse after ovulation, eating saltier and potassium-rich foods, but less calcium and magnesium may help with the chances of conceiving a boy.
  4. Increase potassium-rich foods-The best one is bananas! Be careful though, bananas are one of the worst fruits for carbohydrate content (meaning it will spike blood sugar levels). If you have diabetes, or want to avoid gestational diabetes, go easy on the fruit. Stick to berries instead.
  5. Reduce foods that are high in calcium-This includes dairy products and supplements.

3. The Shettles Method

This method was developed by Dr. Landrum Shettles and is based on the notion that male sperm are smaller, lighter, and quicker than their female counterparts. If it were true, this would mean that male sperm can reach the egg more quickly than female sperm. Female sperm, the theory also holds, are bigger and stronger, so they can survive for longer periods of time but they are also significantly slower.

How to have a boy using the Shettles method:

  1. Try to have bedminton close to the time of ovulation. The window for conceiving a boy is from about 24 hours prior to ovulation to no more than 12 hours past ovulation. You should closely monitor your cycle using one or more methods of ovulation prediction. These methods are charting cervical mucus, charting basal body temperature (BBT), and/or using ovulation predictor kits (OPK).
  2. Use an ovulation predictor kit. If you have not been charting your cervical mucus or basal body temperature, then using an OPK may be easiest for you. Ovulation kits work by detecting when your luteinizing hormone (LH) levels increase. The LH levels surge about 12-48 hours prior to ovulation, so the optimal time to have intercourse would be about 12 hours after the LH surge. As you get close to ovulation, do the OPK test two times a day to catch the surge as soon as it happens.
  3. Go deep. You should try to have it in positions that allow for maximum penetration. Some of the positions are; doggy style, standing up and straddling. This will increase the chances of survival for male sperm on the way through the vaj opening, where the environment is more acidic and less friendly to the male sperm.
  4. Get off! Another factor is a woman’s orgasm, which can affect the vaj PH. If the woman has an orgasm, it creates an alkaline environment in the vaj that is more favorable to boys.

4. Avoid Intercourse Before Ovulation

If you really want a boy, minimize your chances of conceiving a girl by avoiding bedminton in the few days just prior to ovulation, or as soon as your fertile cervical mucus appears. (If you do, use some sort of birth control.) It is more likely you will conceive a girl if you have intercourse during that time.

5. “Sperm Spinning” and Pre-Implant Genetic Testing

The approach has been in practice since the 1970s. In a lab, sperm are placed on top of albumin, which gets gradually thicker toward the bottom. The sperm swim down into the solution and are then separated by faster and slower swimmers. Behind this method is the belief that female sperm swim slower than male sperm. So if a woman wants a boy the doctor will collect the fastest swimming sperm and use them to artificially inseminate her.

Some fertility doctors offer pre-implantation genetic testing after an IVF procedure. This testing determines the chromosome content of the embryos before any are transferred to the mother’s uterus.

Wash your dish towel daily to avoid food poisoning

Tea towels are a kitchen essential. Mopping up spills, drying our dishes and wiping our hands.

But despite being a household must, we’re probably not washing them nearly enough times.

 Go on, can you remember the last time you washed your tea towel? Can you? Don’t worry, neither can we.

But if we’re not careful about how often we’re washing them, our tea towels could become a breeding ground for atrocious germs leading to poten tial food poisoning.

A recent study found that dirty tea towels can harbor bacteria that make you ill and even cause serious infections like E.coli.

That’s because unwashed kitchen towels provide the perfect place for dangerous pathogens to thrive, especially when the towels stay damp, or have come into contact with meat.

For the study, researchers have 100 fresh tea towels to participants to use for a month.

Those taking part were allowed to wash the towels as often as they wanted during the month, and there was no special protocol they had to follow for keeping the towels clean.

After the study, the researchers collected the towels and analysed what was growing in the fabric and the results weren’t pleasant at all.

The scientists found that roughly half of the 100 towels were growing dangerous microbes, including Staphylococcus (also known as “staph”) and E. coli.

A further study, revealed that coli-form bacteria were detected in 89.0% of all towels tested and E. coli in a fifth of all kitchen towels (25.6%).

So why are our kitchen towels always full of bacteria?

Roxanna Pelka, cleaning expert at helpling.co.uk says the reason for the rapid spread of germs is because tea towels are always slightly moist and contain food leftovers or other germs.

“Light moisture is a perfect breeding ground for bacteria, which can spread abruptly,” she says.

Thankfully the remedy for all this nastiness is pretty simple. Give your tea towels a wash, regularly.

While some expert advocate washing your towels daily, Roxanna suggests every 2-3 days is sufficient.

“But you must wash at 60 degrees,” she warns. “This is the only reliable way to kill all germs.”

 Roxanna also suggests putting some vinegar in the softener compartment while washing your tea towels as the vinegar will act as a natural disinfectant.

“The odour disappears when you dry it – don’t worry,” she adds.

It’s also best not to cross-contaminate by washing your tea towels separately from other non-kitchen items.

And there’s some other kitchen rules you should follow if you want to ensure your tea towels remain germ-free.

“Never use a dish towel to dry your hands!” Roxanna warns. “This will transfer even more germs to the towel.”

Instead she suggests using a hand towel for drying hands and a tea towel, purely for drying dishes in the kitchen.

Here Is The Bitter Truth About E-cigarettes

E-cigarettes are everywhere with many smokers relying on so-called vaping to satisfy their nicotine cravings.

Although e-cigarettes do not produce smoke, their nicotine content has left some users worried as to whether their vapour may damage DNA and lead to tumours.

Yet, a new study has revealed e-cigarettes do not cause cancer.

The finding re-enforces claims that e-cigs are a safer alternative to tobacco, the study claims.

According to Action on Smoking and Health, around 2.8 million adults in the UK use e-cigarettes.

Researchers from London-based British American Tobacco exposed laboratory cells to the emissions of an electronic or standard cigarette.

The study, published in the journal of Environmental and Molecular Mutagenesis, revealed that only traces of the normal cigarette collected in the cells and promoted tumour development.

The e-cigarette caused no cancer-related toxicity at any nicotine dose.

Following these findings, the researchers plan to use similar methods to their laboratory cell technique, known as a Bhas 42 assay, to continue to compare conventional and electronic cigarettes.

Study author Dr Damien Breheny said: ‘This is the first time this particular test, the Bhas 42 assay, has been used to compare tobacco and nicotine products.

‘It is one of a series of tests being developed and refined by British American Tobacco to compare the relative biological effects of e-cigarettes and tobacco-heating products with conventional cigarettes.’

This comes after an investigation by the Royal Society of Public Health found nine out of 10 e-cigarette retailers sell the products to customers who had never smoked.

This contravenes retail guidelines.

The investigation looked into 100 of the UK’s specialist vape shops and found 87 per cent of stores were knowingly or unwittingly prepared to sell e-cigarettes to non-historic smokers.

Results also revealed that 45 per cent of stores did not check whether new customers were current or former smokers.

Of those that did check, 76 per cent continued to encourage the customer to start vaping, even once they knew they were a non-smoker.
