Former President Daniel Moi’s son Jonathan is dead -Statement

The family of former President Daniel Arap Moi has asked Kenyans to respect the family’s privacy as they mourn their son Jonathan Toroitich.

Through Moi’s Press Secretary Lee Njiru on phone the family has said ‘the family wants Kenyans to respect the family’s privacy during the the mourning period.

It was not immediately clear what caused the death of Jonathan who was a former rally driver.

The deceased’s younger brother and Baringo Senator Gideon Moi  in a statement said his brother will be remembered for being daring.

Jonathan will be remembered for his daring exploits in the racing tracks, in muddy and dusty tracks, during this time of Easter.

He was amiable, social and down – to – earth and industrious human being.

The family said that they will issue a detailed statement tomorrow on the way forward.Adding that

We are distraught as family and we ask for your prayers and seek your understanding and indulgence to allow us mourn privately.
We will continue to inform Kenyans on need basis and further arrangements.

Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui in a statement consoled Moi’s family.

“It is with great sadness and grief that we have learnt of the demise of Jonathan Toroitich Moi.

I express my condolence to former President Daniel Moi, family and friends. May the almighty God
grant them strength during this time of grief,”

He added that Toroitich will be remembered as a great sportsman. He was one of Kenya’s leading rally drivers, and was also a farmer.May the almighty God rest his soul in eternal peace,” said the Governor.

He was a politician and Member of Parliament for Rongai Constituency in Nakuru. He served two terms and has maintained a low media profile thereafter.

4. John Mark Moi

He was twin brother of Doris Moi. He is a government geologist at Kenya ministry of environment and mineral resources.

5. Jennifer Jemutai Kositany

She was a businesswoman and married to a British husband.

Together they owned businesses key among tea farms that  had seen her be in the limelight fighting court battles over the “management” of a tea farm .

She has maintained a low media profile thereafter.

6.June Moi

She is the last born of Moi’s children and was adopted by the former President.

She was active in her father’s 1992 and 1997 political campaigns, before retreating to her businesses in land, property agency and development.

June attended Nairobi Primary, Kenya High School before going to Canada for her university education.

7. Doris Moi

She is the twin sister of John Mark.

Although, she married, against her father’s approval, the son of Moi-era politician Ibrahim Choge, Simon.

Simon, who worked as her brother Jonathan’s rally navigator, died in 1998 in a mysterious road accident.She now lead a private life as a wealthy widow.

8. Gideon Moi

Who is currently the Baringo Senator has been his father’s favorite and an aspiring president in future.

3. Peter Kenneth

Peter Kenneth is a Kenyan politician who served as member of parliament for Gatanga constituency for a decade.

Kenneth was a goalkeeper when he was still in school and he even went on to play for former Kenya Premier League side Reunion FC.


49-year-old Peter Kenneth, once led the then Kenyan Football Federation (KFF) from 1996 to 2000. Kenneth also served in the ministry of planning and national development.

4. Daniel Wanyama

Wanyama is a Veteran international volleyball player and former long-serving national team captain. According to News24,  Wanyama won the Webuye West parliamentary seat during his second attempt by trouncing his rival after commanding 11,145 votes against his closest rival’s 10,176.

Popularly known as “Amboseli” during his heyday, Wanyama turned out for Kenya Airways and Co-operative Bank teams at club level and was also the overall team captain for the Kenyan contingent to the 1999.

All Africa Games in Johannesburg, South Africa before he later joined sports management as Secretary General of the Kenya volleyball Federation.

5. Gideon Moi

Gideon Moi, who is the youngest son of Kenya’s second president Daniel arap Moi, has served in the senate, representing Baringo County since 2013 general election.

Moi, who is a professional polo player, made history when he became one of the first African players in the Kenya Polo Association.
