Comfort food: How to make homemade chicken fried rice

– The chicken MUST be thin to be cooked throughout in a timely manner. If the chicken is not thin enough the breading will begin to burn.

– Do not add the lemon slices until the last 5 minutes of cook time or they will end up burnt as well. Timing is everything!

– For crisp chicken serve immediately. Serve with any of your favourite accompanyment.

My ex preferred food to me! Cries distraught woman

An ex-fiancé of the former world’s fattest man has said that sex with him was ‘great’ – and that they split up because he chose food over her.

Rebecca Mountain, from Massachusetts, started dating Paul Mason, now 58, in 2013 when she messaged him after seeing him in the documentary Eating To Death: The World’s Fattest Man.

Then 19st, he moved across the pond to be with her in 2014, where they enjoyed a great sex life – despite her weighing just eight stone, reports the Sun.

At the time, Mr Mason’s excess skin alone weighed the same amount at Ms Mountain.

Rebecca Mountain, pictured with her then-boyfriend Paul Mason in 2013, has said the pair's sex life was 'great'

The pair were together until October 2015, when Mr Mason returned to his old habits and began piling on the pounds.

Ms Mountain said of their relationship – and s3x life: ‘I date guys I’m emotionally attracted to and that translates into physical attraction. With Paul we clicked right off the bat. It was really easy to be with him.’

She told the Sun: ‘I remember asking him: “What’s it going to be like to be a thin person again?” In his optimist way he said: “I think it will be good”. But he said he would see pictures of himself as a thin person and he didn’t recognise that person.’

The couple rekindled their relationship in 2017, when they both agreed to try out the paleo diet, which involves eating just meat and vegetables.

But soon enough Mr Mason was eating bread – and it was the final straw for Ms Mountain, who left him for good in July that year.

Now Mr Mason has returned to the UK for treatment on the NHS – including surgery to replace his knees, repair eight stomach hernias and adjust his bypass.

Before he left the UK Mr Mason’s care was costing UK taxpayers £100,000-a-year and an estimated £1.5million in total.

Parents Open Up On Top 10 Things They Wish They Knew Before Having Children

You can read all the books you like before having your first baby, but within a few weeks, you’ll realise that the information within was just the tip of the parental iceberg.

Until you have a sleepless newborn, a six year old refusing to eat anything but pizza, or a teenager who needs more sleep than a hibernating hamster, you haven’t understood tiredness, frustration or extreme happiness and pride.

Here is our round-up of the top ten things every parent wishes they had known – in advance!

You may never have a night’s sleep again. Ever

Most babies refuse to sleep more than a few hours without issuing noisy demands. Toddlers also prefer being awake to being asleep, and after that stage is passed, children like to stay awake reading with a torch til way too late.

You aren’t the only person to influence your kids

Much as you nurture and love them, and show it every day, kids are individuals, and you cannot control their emotions or how others affect them.

You will never be alone again

Whether you’re trying to have a bath with a toddler peering over the edge, or waiting for your 15 year old to ask for a lift home from a party, they are always with you. In some ways this is glorious. In others….well, let’s just say that if you’re offered a spa break, take it.

They learn at their own speed

You cannot force children to walk, talk or – later – read and write. Everything happens at their own pace.

You have to remember impossible amounts of information

When you are in charge of one or more small people, you’re expected to remember all sorts of stuff, from doctor’s appointments to homework, vaccinations and their friends’ birthdays.  Add in chronic sleep deprivation, and it’s almost inevitable you will forget things, whether it’s the timings of events, to collect old shoe boxes for school projects, or even whole sentences.

They aren’t your new best friends

If you’re looking for company, join a book club. You can have fun with them, but you’re there to help them become decent adults and keep them on the straight and narrow.

Kids always need feeding

It’s not just the producing of three meals a day, it’s working out how many they need, and whether there’s a good mix of protein, carbohydrates, fat, and fruit and veg (and the odd treat!).

You’ll know the school holidays are over because you can go to the loo without flushing it first.

Children are chaotic and messy. If you leave a room looking tidy, the superpower of anyone aged from eight months to 18 years is the ability to trash it within five minutes.

Children can be – whisper it – a bit boring

You think that being in an office is tedious? None of your colleagues make you play Snakes and Ladders fifty times in a row.

Study : The Way To A Woman’s Heart Is Through The Stomach

Just like the old saying goes “the way to a man’s heart is through the stomach” has been used to show how one can get close to a man, the same saying now applies to women.

According to a research published in the Journal for appetite, a woman is more likely to respond well to a man’s romantic gesture while on a full stomach than on  an empty on.

Researchers at Drexel University explored brain circuitry in hungry versus satisfied women who were past-dieters and those who had never dieted.

The study’s first author Alice Ely, PhD, said that they found that young women both with and without a history of dieting had greater brain activation in response to romantic pictures in reward-related neural regions after having eaten than when hungry.

As per the data, eating may prime or sensitise young women to rewards beyond food. It also supports a shared neurocircuitry for food and sex.

Specifically, the researchers looked at whether the brain’s reward response to food differed significantly in women at risk for future obesity versus those who had never dieted. All of the study participants were young, college-age women of normal weight.

Ely said the data suggests historical dieters, who longitudinal studies have shown are more at risk for weight gain, may be predisposed by their brain reward circuitry to desire food more than people who have not dieted.

While both groups’ reward centers responded more to romantic cues when fed, the historical dieters’ neural activity noticeably differed from the non-dieters in one brain region that had also turned up in the earlier food studies.

The pattern of response was similar to historical dieter’s activation when viewing highly palatable food cues, and was consistent with research showing overlapping brain-based responses to sex, drugs and food, said Ely.

Foods To Avoid While Curing A Hangover

So you were out last night and you really outdid yourself on the shots of tequila , vodka , whisky or whatever your poison is  and now you are paying the price with a nasty hangover.

Well the bad thing is that you swear not to drink but you will do it again, the good thing is I will tell you the foods to avoid when hang-overed.

Orange juice: If your hangover has bypassed your tummy and is only brewing up a storm in your head, then orange juice is safe for you. Otherwise, even though you may be tempted to rehydrate with a glass of orange juice, try to resist. The sourness of the citric acid will only upset your tummy further, rather than soothing it.

Coffee: You might think that coffee will stimulate your system and help you out of the doldrums, but actually it will just make your hangover worse. Hangovers are the result of severe dehydration, and coffee being a diuretic will just dehydrate you further. Instead, drink plenty of water, fresh fruit juice or herbal tea.

Greasy food : Greasy food is better at preventing hangovers than curing them. If you dig into a big burger or a pack of fries before you start drinking, the grease will line your stomach and lower the alcohol absorption rate (while also loading you up on unhealthy calories, so watch out). However, this same theory doesn’t work the next morning, since greasy food irritates your stomach when it is already sensitive.

Meat: You can eat a little bit of meat if you want, but avoid eating a whole lot of it, even if your system is suddenly craving it. Your blood sugar is probably low after drinking, so eating a lot of protein without much carbs will lower it even further, causing your headache to ratchet up considerably.

More alcohol: Many people claim that you can cure a hangover by drinking more alcohol. In fact, there is a Norwegian phrase called ‘hair of the dog’, which means that the cure for whatever problem you’re facing involves the thing that did the damage in the first place. Drinking more alcohol will make you feel better for a short while, but it will eventually dehydrate your system even more, intensifying your hangover.

Chinese Restaurant “Locks out” Africans after 5pm

A Chinese restaurant located at the junction of Galana and Lenana roads has been accused of locking out Africans after 5pm. According to the Daily Nation, their reporters were turned away when they visited the restaurant at 7pm. The guard informed them that time for Africans to access the restaurant had lapsed.

Taxi drivers accompanying the Chinese, European and Indian patrons are the only Africans allowed into the compound after the hours stated. According to the management certain ‘loyal’ Africans are allowed to dine there. Senator Mike Sonko and Raphael Tuju who are allegedly friends of the owner are also admitted after sunset.

According to The Nation, Ms Esther Zhao the restaurant’s relationship manager says that the ‘no-African after 5pm’ policy is strictly for security measures as Africans pose a threat to their Chinese clientèle. “We don’t admit Africans that we don’t know because you never know who is Al-Shabaab and who isn’t,” she said.

How to prepare a quick brunch (recipe)

If you are employed in Nairobi with an 8-5 job plus Nairobi traffic which makes it 6-6, it is hard to prepare an extravagant breakfast for family especially if you do not have a househelp. But you can always make up to your family in case you don’t work over the weekends by fixing them a delicious brunch. Thanks to Gatwiri of, whose blog has been nominated for the best food blog in the annual BAKE awards 2015 we have the perfect recipe for you.

8 slices of brown barrel bread
2 slices of brawn, cut in quarters
2 rashers of bacon
1 white onion sliced
1 tomato sliced
Apricot jam – or whatever kind of jam you have on hand or even honey
Mozzarella cheese pieces
2 tbsp dried parsley
1 tbsp vegetable oil
Salt to taste

Start by frying the bacon in the pan. Toast the bread on one side then apply butter on the other side

Add a tablespoon of oil in the pan and fry the onions. The next step involves assembling the sandwich. Apply jam on the four slices then on the other four slices, put the mozzarella cheese pieces. According to leotunapika you can pop them in the microwave for one minute to get the cheese melting.

On the cheesy side add the brawn then the tomato slices. Finally on the other slices with the jam, pile on the onions and the bacon.

For the potatoes heat some oil add the potatoes, parsley and salt. Keep turning to ensure they don’t burn. Cook until hot and crispy.

The worst eating habits revealed

They are the things we do without thinking twice – but could have an adverse effect on our health. From eating lunch at a desk to skipping meals, these and other bad eating habits have been revealed in a new infographic.

Not planning meals in advance, taking the weekend off from eating healthily, drinking a glass of wine before bedtime, not drinking enough water, overeating on the days you work out and adding salt to everything also feature on the list of what not to do.

The infographic, which was created for website, advises to start planning the week’s meals on a Sunday and ensure that the kitchen cupboards are stocked with healthy items such as whole grains, eggs and yogurts. When attempting on a healthy diet always plan your meal in advance as putting together a meal when you’re hungry is not a good idea.

Break the habit of the pre-bedtime glass of wine by replacing it with a low-calorie drink such as tea. Or you could just ease yourself into it by swapping to a smaller glass.

Hungry in the morning? Choose a high protein breakfast such as eggs instead of a bowl of cereal to start the day as the latter contains high-levels of sugar which will only make you hungrier as the day goes on. Whole grains, artificial sweeteners, crisps and fruit juices are also on the list of foods to avoid.

Watching what you eat but still want to dine out? Remember to check the restaurant’s menu before you leave home to find out what the healthiest options are. Also ask for water when ordering drinks or choose low-fat milk, unsweetened tea or drinks without added sugars. Start your meal with salad to help control hunger and order grilled, steamed or broiled dishes instead of those which are fried or sautéed.

When you are at the restaurant, always ask the server what’s in the dish and how the meal is cooked. And try not to reach for the bread basket before your meal starts or opt for a buffet option as they can both make you consume more than you intended to.

Finally, to keep on the straight and narrow, steer clear of all desserts and just have healthy options like sorbet or fruits.

Meet the man who tastes dog food for a living

When you meet someone and ask them  what they do for a living , you expect answers like lawyer, teacher, banker etc .

Thats not the case for Mr. Philip Wells  who is paid and works as  a dog food tester.

According to the Metro,  Mr. Wells eats dog food for a living every single day and  is passionate about it.

He says ‘Dogs’ palates are different to humans’ – but taste is an important quality check to ensure each different ingredient is perfectly balanced in just the right proportions,’ he says.

Philip’s  official job title is not actually Dog Food Taster but Technical Director at Lily’s Kitchen, says he likes the Lovely Lamb with Peas and Parsley best.

‘It’s always a pleasure to quality check this one as the recipe is one of the best, but it’s also great for this time of year – it’s our lowest fat dry food so perfect to tie in with a healthy start to 2015.’

He doesn’t just get stuck straight in though. First he  looks at the food  to  make sure there are  enough blueberries or green beans for example’ – and gives it a good sniff.

‘The aroma of food tells you so much,’ he says. ‘If it smells bad it probably is bad. Our recipes use only freshly prepared meat and botanical herbs so it doesn’t smell like normal dog food. Trying the food is the best way to pick up on the nuances of the cooking,’ he says

Taste and mouth-feel along with “crunch” tells us so much about the baking process,’ he says.

Would you handle this kind of job?

Study suggests brain could coach body to burn fat

The brain could be a powerful fat burning tool, say scientists at Monash University in Melbourne who discovered that two naturally occurring hormones interact to convert energy-storing white fat into energy-burning, “good” brown fat.

“Turning white fat into brown fat is a very exciting new approach to developing weight loss agents,” says lead author Professor Tony Tiganis from the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. “Eventually, we think we may be able to help people lose weight by targeting these two enzymes.”

One of the enzymes, leptin, is an appetite suppressant that’s generated in fat cells and the other is insulin, which comes from the pancreas when levels of glucose in the blood start to rise.

Professor Tiganis’ research shows that the two hormones act together and persuade a group of neurons — called proopiomelanocortin (POMC) neurons — in the brain to convert the fat from white to brown, thereby igniting the fat-burning process.

“These hormones give the brain a comprehensive picture of the fatness of the body,” says Professor Tiganis. “Because leptin is produced by fat cells, it measures the level of existing fat reserves — the more fat, the more leptin. Whereas insulin provides a measure of future fat reserves because glucose levels rise when we eat.”

If all this has you wondering why you can’t just think your way skinny, chances are enzymes called phosphatases that inhibit the actions of leptin and insulin could be working against you.

Man threatens to kill mother after she refused to prepare him a meal

A 26-year-old man has been arraigned before a Narok Court for threatening to kill his mother who allegedly failed to prepare his evening meal.

The man was before Narok Resident Magistrate Zainabu Abdul charged guilty of threatening his mother Sarah Ngoyo with a panga on Christmas day this year in Narok town.

Davis Ngoyo is said to have come home drunk and became violent towards his mother and further went ahead to cut his own hand dripping blood on the face of his frightened mother.

Ngoyo pleaded guilty to the charges but the mother who was present in court pleaded with the court to deal with her son as she had become a threat to the family.

Sarah said his son would go into fits of violence whenever he was drunk and told the court that he had threatened to kill family members on several occasions.

His case will be mentioned on Tuesday.

4 Of The Most Outrageously Expensive Dishes From Around The World

Most people don’t mind paying a little extra for a really good steak, especially if it’s made from delicious Kobe beef. Sometimes you may even be willing to fork out a little extra cash for a gourmet lobster dinner… but would you still do it if that lobster came with flakes of edible gold leaf and set you back more than a thousand dollars? Read on to learn more about some of the world’s most outrageously expensive dishes.

1. Chocolate Pudding — Lindeth Howe Country House Hotel, England

This one is made with the best quality chocolate on the planet which is moulded into the shape of Fabergé egg and served with layer upon layer of champagne jelly. It’s then topped with edible gold leaf and served with champagne and caviar. The whole thing is then topped off with a diamond. Don’t think you can order this à la carte though… you’ll need to pre-order this dessert at least two weeks in advance.

PRICE: $ 35,000

2. Golden Opulence Sundae — Serendipity 3, New York City

his creation from Serendipity 3 on New York City’s Upper East Side is definitely not for children: this opulent dessert is decadent Tahitian vanilla ice cream infused with Madagascan vanilla beans and chunks of rare Chuao chocolate from Venezuela. It’s then drizzled with one of the world’s most expensive chocolates from Amedei Porcelana, and decorated with gold-covered almonds, chocolate truffles, marzipan cherries, and covered with 23-carat edible gold leaf. Then, let’s not forget the mother of pearl spoonful of Grande Passion caviar and gilded sugar flower. Think all this is served in a regular sundae glass? Think again… it comes in a Baccarat crystal goblet with an 18-carat gold spoon.

PRICE: $ 1000

3. White truffle and Gold Pizza — Margo’s, Malta

A few years ago, Margo’s Pizzeria in Valetta, Malta, set the world record for the most expensive pizza on the planet.
