I didn’t think this would end properly for Femi One and I was proven right. Femi recently spoke about the knock-on effect that Azziad Nasenya had on her huge hit, “Utawezana”.
Femi was asked whether she had paid Azziad any money considering the huge influence she had had in promoting the song, thus making it well-known among the masses.
Her standpoint was that Azziad was one of the people who had participated in the “Utawezana” challenge and in essence devaluing the huge contribution the Tik Tok star had made.
Femi’s viewpoint hasn’t been well-received by Kenyans on Twitter with many calling her out saying that they didn’t know about the song until they saw the viral clip of Azziad dancing to it.
To them, the campus student deserved to be paid or at least thanked for supporting local content and making Utawezana gain international recognition.
The concerned Kenyans cautioned Femi against being ungrateful and putting her pride ahead of everything else. They urged her to be thankful that Azziad’s famous waist and remarkable dancing skills drew men and women from all over the world to Kenyan content.
Even Twitter bigwig Bravin Yuri weighed in saying, “Fact is, whenever you start playing Utawezana, Azziad’s face will likely come to your mind and not Femi One’s. That is how you know who actually made the song big.”
Others had a different point of view saying that Femi deserves all the credit for the song’s success as she had put her blood, sweat and tears into the song and that Azziad was piggybacking on someone else’s hard work.
Those making kelele mingi #azziad needs to get paid should go through copyright law. Is she co-author of the song in any way? Is she in MCsk, Prisk or Kamp records. If she dances to Drakes song today and u get to like her moves, Drake should pay her. As who? Did he force her? 🤣 pic.twitter.com/t2FVN8idP6

While I see the second point of view my question is can’t the two standpoints be mutually inclusive. That while Femi deserves credit for the song’s popularity, Azziad’s contribution shouldn’t be discounted.
