“To say Azziad is the one who made ‘Utawezana’ big is a lie” Femi One

Kenyan rapper Femi One was the villain in the story for many after the emergence of Tik Tok star Azziad Nasenya who had become popular after dancing to the rapper’s famous “Utawezana” song.

Femi at the time of the song’s release, urged fans to participate in Utawezana Dance Challenge as a way of boosting its popularity.

The song which featured rapper Mejja took a life of its own after Azziad’s wonderful viral video dancing to it became the biggest thing on East African social media.

The chicken and egg debate among many online was whether Femi should pay Azziad for boosting the song or Azziad should be grateful to Femi?

Some fans, who also supported the Tippy Toe singer, said that Azziad was also popular courtesy of the hit song while others thought the reverse was true.

Femi has finally spoken on the topic during an Interview with Massawe Japani on Radio Jambo, with the rapper saying she reached out to the influencer and thanked her for doing the challenge and even had her back when some people unfairly criticised her.

“To be honest, I started that challenge and anyone who participated in it, whether on the first or last day is very important to me. They helped build the song and the fans were free to choose who they liked the most and they chose Azziad. To say she is the one who made the song big is a lie as she did her challenge the fourth day after the song was already a hit,” she said.

Femi observed that both her and Azziad had a big break through the song. “Azziad got famous, and I got more streams on my song,” Femi argued. She also mentioned that she reached out to Azziad and thanked and even tried to meet with her, but she told her she is swamped doing interviews.

2020 was arguably the best year in rapper Femi One’s career. The lady released the mega-hit, “Unawezana” with singer Mejja one of the biggest songs of the year.

The song spawned a lot of challenges on TikTok showing just how catchy it was. But fame wasn’t the only thing that increased in  Femi’s life, she became more popular but in a more nefarious way-men were sending her nVdes.

The 26-year-old admitted that many men were sending photos of their private parts to her. In an interview, Femi One says that the photos were sent to her with most captioning them with “nitawezana”.

”Ah, izo nazipata sana, especially time nili release ‘Utawezana’… Ona hii, ona hii. Niliona vitu, niliona mbaya… Hio time ilikuwa mbaya. Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya…”

And the nVdes were not just limited to Kenyan men alone, even men from Tanzania and Uganda sent the disturbing photos. It became so bad that she even stopped opening her messages.

Femi One or Azziad? Kenyans argue about who made “Utawezana” song a success

I didn’t think this would end properly for Femi One and I was proven right. Femi recently spoke about the knock-on effect that Azziad Nasenya had on her huge hit, “Utawezana”.

Femi was asked whether she had paid Azziad any money considering the huge influence she had had in promoting the song, thus making it well-known among the masses.

Her standpoint was that Azziad was one of the people who had participated in the “Utawezana” challenge and in essence devaluing the huge contribution the Tik Tok star had made.

Femi’s viewpoint hasn’t been well-received by Kenyans on Twitter with many calling her out saying that they didn’t know about the song until they saw the viral clip of Azziad dancing to it.

To them, the campus student deserved to be paid or at least thanked for supporting local content and making Utawezana gain international recognition.

The concerned Kenyans cautioned Femi against being ungrateful and putting her pride ahead of everything else. They urged her to be thankful that Azziad’s famous waist and remarkable dancing skills drew men and women from all over the world to Kenyan content.

Even Twitter bigwig Bravin Yuri weighed in saying, “Fact is, whenever you start playing Utawezana, Azziad’s face will likely come to your mind and not Femi One’s. That is how you know who actually made the song big.”

Others had a different point of view saying that Femi deserves all the credit for the song’s success as she had put her blood, sweat and tears into the song and that Azziad was piggybacking on someone else’s hard work.

While I see the second point of view my question is can’t the two standpoints be mutually inclusive. That while Femi deserves credit for the song’s popularity, Azziad’s contribution shouldn’t be discounted.

Will you pay TikTok star Azziad for promoting “Utawezana?” Femi One asked by fan

Femi One and Mejja’s song “Utawezana” will forever be remembered as the song that trended, whenever we reflect on quarantine times in the future.

The song was and is still a banger for some with the catchphrase, Utawezana being used in texts and hashtags online as people “tune” each other.

One person that many attribute with the success and awareness of the song is Tik Tok star Azziad Nasenya. The petite 19-year-old burst onto the scene dancing to the song in a clip that went mega-viral.

The clip spawned many copycats in Kenya and abroad and popularised a song that had hitherto been an underground hit.

Now the song is a certified hit with Femi One revealing that it had crossed 5 million views on YouTube – a mean feat for a song that was released barely a month ago.

Considering this, one curious fan asked the celeb whether she would be sharing in the profits of the song with Azziad considering what she had done? “I hope Azziad received some sort of payment for her efforts,” an Instagram user named Raphmckers wrote.

Femi’s answer was capitalistic to the core, replying that Azziad was a part of a group on TikTok who popularised the song while participating in the Utawezana challenge after coming across the hit on the app.

“The song was already trending on Tik Tok and that is why she did the challenge because she came across it,” Femi explained.

I disagree with Femi’s point and here’s why; Of all the people who participated in the Utawezana challenge, who else can Kenyans easily remember apart from Azziad?

Azziad’s influence in the popularity of the song cannot be overstated and while Femi might not want to admit it or pay her (she isn’t owed anything by law), at least the Tik Tok star didn’t walk away empty-handed from the deal.

It seems that the hype that came with “Utawezana” will not die as Ugandan socialite Zari Hassan has decided to join in.

For those who can’t remember, the song gained traction after Tik Tok star Azziad Nasenya danced along to its catchy lyrics in a widely circulating video that took the internet by storm.

After her viral video, many others tried to capitalise on the popularity of the song boosting it to heights it most likely wouldn’t have reached without Azziad’s rendition.

And it has now crossed the Kenyan border to Zari – who lives in South Africa at the moment. Posting on her Instagram stories, the mother of five shared a video of herself singing to the Kenyan song.

We Weren’t Ready!!! This Is How Femi One Looks Beneath All That Make Up (Photo)

Many times, we hear men complain about women’s makeup to a point they confess how traumatized they are when they see them without makeup.

Last year, there was an article that caught the eye of many, of a man who sued his wife after he saw her face the next day without make up. Many people found it really funny, even though some thought he took the situation too far.

Femi one has finally showed her real face and what she hides under all the layers of make up she puts on. It’s pretty evident that she’s really pretty, I even wonder why she has to hide all that beauty with make up.
