RIP: Similarities between Bob Collymore and Mastermind CEO Wilfred Murungi

The business community has this year mourned the death of two CEO’s, namely Safaricom’s Bob Collymore and Mastermind Tobacco’s Wilfred Murungi.

Many have eulogized the tow saying the country has lost valuable assets. We take a look at similarities between the two gentlemen.

10 things Bob Collymore taught wife Wambui when he was alive

1. The memorial service of Mastermind Tobacco founder Wilfred Murungi took place on June 13 at All Saints Cathedral, just like Bob Collymore’s. Both memorial services were open to everyone.

2. They were CEO’s of top companies in Kenya

Wilfred was at the helm of the company for more than three decades. The late Murungi founded Mastermind after learning the ropes of the cigarette industry during a stint at BAT Kenya, which he left in 1985 having held the position of technical director.

Bob held the position of CEO of Safaricom Limited since November 1, 2010.

In various interviews, Collymore revealed that he started earning money at the age of 12 while living with his grandmother in Guyana.

He would make art pieces from plastic moulds and also little brooches from coconut shells which he would sell.

3. Their funerals were strictly for family and very simple at that

None of them had those elaborate ceremonies associated with the who’s who in Kenya where tens of speakers bore people with speeches (or politics).

Only 8 people attended the funeral of Murungi, while Bob’s immediate family asked Kenyans to respect their privacy.

“They began by insulting each other before it culminated in wrestling where Owiti overpowered the officer. The police officer drew a knife and stabbed him in the stomach when he (police) was lying down,” a witness said.

Ivy Wangechi’s friend writes emotional letter: ‘Your friends love you’

Kenyan writer and violinist Muthonib has penned a touching letter to the late Ivy Wangeci.

Ivy, a sixth-year medical student at Moi University was hacked to death by Naftali Kinuthia on the eve of her 25 birthday.

Muthonib’s letter read;

Dearest Ivy Wangeci,

I’m so sorry for the systems and failures in our society that allowed this man to exist, the man who hacked your life away. I’m sorry for all the gossip sites and news outlets calling him your lover, elevating him to a status undeserving of a queen like you.

I’m sorry for all the slander, for all the ways people have dragged your name in the dirt. As if there’s a scale somewhere, of acceptable reasons to kill a woman. To kill anyone. And so they come up with all sorts of stories, to justify the crime. How vile and twisted is this country? Where is the compassion? Where is the empathy?

I cannot even imagine what your family and friends are going through right now. To, first, receive this shocking news followed by the ugly stories.

I want to know about you, your hopes and dreams. I want your story and everything you stood for/hoped for/ dreamed to be what lives on. I wouldn’t want your name to only be associated with this murderer.
Your friends love you, Ivy. They’ve told us who you were and it breaks my heart further that you won’t be here to build the world you dreamed of. The one you have worked so hard to be a part of and contribute to.
May your memory always be love.
May your memory also be justice.

Her letter has touched many and below are touching comments from Kenyans on Ivy Wangeci’s death:

Suzanna Owiyo For heaven sake, life has been lost and you are busy talking about kufunga nunu. Kichwa maji wewe. Let us not be reckless on such matters. I can only imagine what the family is going through now. #RIPIVY

Bervelyn Kats So heartbreaking 💔💔💔

Hon Esther Passaris My deepest sympathies go out to the family and friends of Ivy Wangechi. There’s absolutely nothing Ivy did or didn’t do to deserve the inhumane violence meted on her. I pray justice prevails. Over to you @DCI_Kenya #RIPIvy #EndFemicide #SayHerNameKe

Suicide does run in families – study

Highlights of the study

– Scientists think that whether or not someone can become suicidal is tied to their genes, environment and experience

– Previous studies have suggested, separately, that psychiatric disorders like bipolar disorder increases suicide risks and run in families

– New National Institutes of Health research found that families with a pattern of suicide attempts also tend to have social anxiety in common

– The researchers believe that these tendencies could help identify at-risk people who would otherwise slip between the cracks

Suicide may run in families that tend to suffer from mental illnesses, a new study finds.

The new study, conducted by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), suggests that families in which social anxiety is more common may also be at greater risk for suicide attempts.

The researchers believe that this knowledge could help doctors catch at-risk individuals who might otherwise slip between the cracks of prevention efforts.

In the grander scheme of health research, it’s only recently that we have discovered that a handful of rare diseases are caused by a one or several specific genes.

And it is even more recently that we’ve begun to gain a rudimentary understanding of mental illness.

Suicide risks are still poorly understood and often overlooked.

As best we can tell, mental illnesses are predicated on a perfect storm of genetic and environmental factors.

The NIH recently discovered that major depression, bipolar disorder, autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and schizophrenia all share some genes that put some at higher risk of the disorders than others.

And some of these mental disorders can be predictors of suicide attempt and death risks, too.

They also tend to run in families.

To investigate whether suicide runs in families, researchers at the NIH conducted the largest study to-date interviewing family members of 119 adults and their families about their histories of mental illness and suicide attempts and deaths.

Prior research has shown links between various psychiatric disorders and suicidal tendencies, and psychiatric disorders themselves do tend to run in families.

But the new study uncovered new patterns common to members of the same families.

The researchers found that when suicide seemed to run in a family, so did feelings of social anxiety – a trend that hadn’t been established previously.

Links between the two were even more potent when family members also had a psychiatric disorder, most notably, bipolar disorder.

These parallel tendencies suggested to the scientists that ‘people with these traits could have greater reactivity to social loss or disruption.’

Because social anxiety is fueled by difficulty processing negative emotions, the finding suggests that both shared social conditioning and inherited brain functions may be at play in introducing suicide risks into a family.

Or, these family members could have shared an outsize amount of trauma and stress in their shared pasts – making them more vulnerable to suicidal ideation.

Family patterns are hardly a one-size-fits-all diagnostic tool, however,  the researchers wrote.

On the other hand, their discovery suggested that including a finer analysis of family histories, personalities and experiences might help doctors catch individuals at-risk for suicide that otherwise would have slipped through the cracks.

‘The broader association of mental disorders with familial environment suggests that risk research that focuses solely on individual-level biomarkers, susceptibility genes, or neural architecture may be unable to identify suicide risk without accounting for the contextual association with vulnerability to proximal life challenges,’ they wrote.

Nandi man hacks wife to death at chief’s home and then commits suicide after domestic quarrel

A 38-year-old man from Nandi County hacked his wife to death using a panga before hanging himself, following a domestic quarrrel.

The man from Kapkatet village had seperated with the woman who had gone to  live at her uncle’s home near Ndalat three kilometers away.

The man lured the woman to a home near Ndalat and hacked her several times after which he fled and was found hanging on a tree at his parent’s home.

The woman was identified as Ednah Kurgat, a mother of three children and she had gone to live with the uncle Philip Songok, who is an Assistant Chief.

Residents said the two lovers had separated last year after a domestic quarrel and efforts to reconcile them had failed.

Emily Sawe, who is an aunt to the woman, witnessed the incident and narrated how she pleaded with the  man to spare the woman, but the assailant turned hostile.

“She slashed her several times on the head and other parts of the body as I pleaded but he went on and killed her”, said the aunt.

The man later jumped over the fence and disappeared into the bush after the attack.

Villagers later found the man’s body hanging on a tree at his father’s compound.

Sawe said the assailant who was hiding on the fence, jumped in the compound after the deceased came out of the house and started to cut her with a panga.

He said the attack was sudden and shocking.

“She was loudly pleading but he cut her on the hands and neck and head with a panga causing her to blead extensively after she fell down”, said Sawe.

The assailant did not utter any words during the attack.

Police were called to the scene where they found a jacket, a mobile phone and  bottle of Vodka alcohol left behind by the man.

Area MP Vincent Tuwei and Deputy County Commissioner Sammy Makhanu visited the scene and condemned the attack.

“We have very high incidents of domestic violence in this area and that is because of high consumption of alcohol and drugs among the couples” said Makhanu.

Tuwei and the administrator asked residents especially couples to involve elders  and church leaders in sorting out domestic quarrels.
