The number of bizarre videos going viral of Pastor Nganga doing the most have caught our attention. We all have opinions about why he would touch a womans titties, or blast another for having cheap shoes.
So let us take a look back at all the most ridiculous things Pastors in Africa have asked congregants to do in the name of a miracle.
The church in Kenya is as famous/infamous as most of the excellent politicians this country has produced. For some, it is a beacon of hope and change while for others it a symbol of wealth, greed, fraud and entitlement by the clerics who run these institutions.
Over the last decade or so, the church as a collective has been faced by many scandals, some that have made many questions the moral superiority that the institution claims to have.
But that isn’t the reason I am writing this article. Mine is to look back at some of the most sordid scandals that have occurred in the past.
Pastor Deya and his miracle babies scam
This pastor who has more lives than a cat will always be remembered for his infamous miracle babies scandal where he had been accused of kidnapping children.
After being extradited from England where he had run to, Deya was imprisoned in Kamiti for a time but was able to post a Sh. 10 million bond. Now he is back preaching just like he never left.
Thomas Wahome of Helicopter of Christ Church in Kenya
His scam was so obvious I don’t understand how people could beleive him!? But I digress. The Bishop as he was known, started charging members of his congregation about Sh1,000 shillings to tell them if their names were written in the Book of Life.
For those who aren’t aware, the Book of Life is where God records the name of all who are destined for heaven. And that isn’t the only scam he was running, he had previously told his followers that they could be healed of their diseases just by touching his clothes. The catch? Each congregant had to pay Sh1, 200 to get the chance of touching his clothes.
Prophetess Lucy Nduta of HIV healing
Healing is clearly an area where many church-goers are in dire need of. And as such desperation materialises. Evangelist saw HIV/AIDS sufferers as perfect marks for her grift.
Lucy who proclaimed that she was a prophetess, convinced HIV/AIDS patients into purchasing prayers that would cure them of the deadly disease. She promised her followers that she could heal HIV/AIDS through prayers.
Kanyari and his miracle scam
His is probably the most famous church scandal ever. Why? Kanyari was exposed by KTN’s famous investigative show, Jicho Pevu, and put the man of God in the spotlight.
The show exposed Kanyari for perpetuating that he could heal and bless people. The catch was that one had to send Sh.310 to him for them to get their miracle. “Send Sh310 to my number and get your blessings”. That was the easy pitch that engulfed many Kenyans.
It was however found out by Jicho Pevu that his shows were scripted, including the miracles. Since then Kanyari has rebranded and calls himself Pastor Mwangi.
Pastor Ng’ang’a has to make it on this list. His are too numerous to enumerate but there are some honourable mentions. Last year, Pastor Ng’ang’a was at the center of controversy after Tanzanian singer Rose Muhando attended his church.
The issue wasn’t her attendance but the exorcism that occurred on the beloved yet troubled musician. The exorcism became the talk of town as it was recorded on video for all to see.
Many wondered how Muhando had ended up at the church in the first place. But as with many things in his life, the incident hasn’t stopped the pastor from making eye-raising statements-In fact, it seems to have emboldened him.
Finger of God Church
This church was popularised by former KTN TV presenter Esther Arunga who brought into light it’s founder, musician Joseph Hello and Quincy Timberlake who became her husband.
The church wanted to form a political party and vie for the presidency, something many called them out for but they said that it was a call from God.
And that wasn’t the end of scandal for Arunga and Timberlake as trouble followed them to Australia where they had decided to relocate.
This man convinced his followers that he was a God. The man is said to have died Chemororoch village in Soy Constituency but that hasn’t stopped his widows and children from believing that he would come back. “Our God is not dead. He is just on a long journey,” is what they say.
Gospel artists have featured in a number of scandals in the last few years. The likes of Bahati, DK Kwenye Beat, and Hope Kid have been caught up in less than holy situations.
But they don’t shock me. The scandals are representative of the modern-day church. My personal experiences with the church have soured me and taught me at the same time. Call it making lemonade out of lemons. The root cause of the church’s problems is the false doctrines being preached.
Let me explain why the church is the reason some gospel artists are always in scandals.
The “gospel” taught in most churches is a perversion
The modern church is teaching a doctrine that is based on a mixture of grace and law. The law and grace are fundamental but disparate aspects of the word of God. The law being God’s unbending and perfect rules and grace his unmerited and unearned favour.
The perversion preached in most churches is that one gets saved by believing that Christ died for them on the cross. The error is that good works are a prerequisite for one maintaining that salvation, meaning someone can lose their salvation.
One’s salvation according to this “gospel” is that it is maintained through works such as confession of sins and following the ten commandments after one is saved. This is an error that the apostle Paul speaks about in his book of Galatians.
What is the true gospel?
In Paul’s gospel, one’s salvation is a gift and is received by grace through faith. One cannot lose it no matter what they do. Meaning they are eternally saved, something most churchgoers do not know. (Galatians 1:11-12, 1st Corinthians 15:1-4, Galatians 2:16-21, Ephesians 2:8,9)
Why is this distinction important and why does it matter for the gospel artistes?
Because what someone believes will guide how they live. Believe right and you shall live right. As a man thinketh so is he. DK Kwenye Beat, Hope kid and Bahati are all victims of a wrong belief system fuelled by wrong teachings.
The trio has in the past asked for forgiveness from God when they were caught in a scandal. This betrays a wrong belief system taught by most churches. Why is it wrong?
God has already forgiven them. Colossians 1:13-14 and Colossians 2:13 speak of God’s perfect forgiveness. This means that Colossiansthe trio is living in perpetual fear of going to hell while the good news states that their salvation is guaranteed and eternal. (Ephesians 1:11-13).
I am not saying one should not ask for forgiveness from someone he or she has wronged. That is fine (Ephesians 4:32).
My issue is that these gospel musicians attaching forgiveness of their sins to confession of their sins to God betrays a fundamental misunderstanding of the gospel.
A misunderstanding that is taught in most churches.
Why is this an issue?
Paul speaks of how the law cannot make one righteous in Romans 7. He explains that the law is perfect but that cannot make the sinner good.
In fact, he says, it’s purpose is not to make one good but draw out the bad in you, so one can see the need for God’s grace. The more one tries to follow it the more sinful they become(Romans 3:19,20).
When the pastors teach this bad doctrine (of following the law to maintain their salvation) to their flock (which might include the gospel musicians) the more sinful they become. (Romans 3:19,20, Romans 7:15-19)
What is the end result of these bad doctrines being taught?
The more the artistes follow the bad teachings, the more sinful they become. A result that can be seen plain as day, something the artistes are struggling with but don’t know why?
A poster by a Kenyan pastor has caught the attention of KOT, who are rather amused by it.
The poster implies there will be a special service just for the new currency.
The new generation bank notes were unveiled by the Central Bank of Kenya back in June and Kenyans have until October to exchange old noted.
There will be no extension of the October 1, 2019 deadline for the withdrawal of the old 1,000 shilling banknotes.
The crazy poster reads:
‘Carry two notes of the same denomination of the new currency.’
The new denomination special service will be held on Sunday July 7th.
Can you already spot the scam here or is it just me?
The theme of the service is financial breakthrough.
But ask yourself, for whom? The followers or the church.
Will you be going to bless the new currency? Let us know by dropping your comments below. Also don’t forget to update us next week after attending. We want to know about your financial breakthrough.
God bless you all.

This comes barely a month after he resigned as a pastor from Neno Evangelism Center. While giving his last speech at the Mombasa based church, Bishop Wafula said
MAY GOD REMEMBER YOU, DADDY, WHEREVER YOU ARE, FOR WHAT GOD HAS DONE FOR ME. MY DAD, APOSTLE NGANGA WE HAVE GONE PLACES WITH YOU. I HAVE LEARNT THIS GIFT OF ORATORY FROM YOU. I SALUTE YOU, SIR, I RESPECT YOU. YOU WILL REMAIN A TREASURE IN MY HEART, I WILL NEVER FORGET YOU WHENEVER I GO.
This followed by controversial city pastor James Ng’ang’a lashing out at servants of his church calling them ‘idiots, arrogant and rubbish.’
Well, last weekend Bishop Wafula launched his new church Shalom Miracle Church. He held a crusade at Tononoka Grounds in Mombasa, which was attended by hundreds of worshippers.
Taking to his official Facebook page, he shared a verse from the book of Job 42:2 – I know that you can do all things; no purpose of yours can be thwarted.’
MAKUSUDI YA MUNGU HAYAWEZI KUZUILIKA. WAKATI WA MBINGU KUKUINUA UKIFIKA HAKUNA WA KUZUIA. ILIKUWA IBAADA YA JUMAPILI YA AJABU SANA KATIKA UWANJA WA TONONOKA. SIFA NA UTUKUFU ZIMURUDIE MUNGU MILELE.
His wife congratulated him on his new move and her message read,
Oh yes, what a powerful message we had from ye servant of God Bishop Robert Eliyah Wafula of Shalom Miracle Church Mombasa. Hakika makusudi ya Mungu hayawezi kuzuilika, my friend With God it Works, Watapigana na wewe lakini hawatakuweza!
Here are photos from the crusade, that is still the talk of the town.
A clip of controversial Pastor James Nganga abusing people went viral.
An angry Nganga speaks terribly to the congregation, and KOT can’t handle it.
Classic 105’s Maina Kageni responded saying it’s shocking, but was even more perplexed by peoples somewhat relaxed reaction saying it’s a normal thing from Pastors to talk to the congregation like that.
Nganga in the clip is heard saying
if you are not going to respect my wife I will kick you out of my church
In the six-minute clip widely shared online, an upset Pastor Ng’ang’a insults and threatens un-named individuals for disrespecting his wife.
“If you are not going to respect my wife I will kick you out of my Ministry it doesn’t matter who you are. This time I will show you my power. If you don’t respect her, leave my Church and go start your own wajinga hawa,” he yells in front of his congregation listen.
“You have become rich in my Church; stupid, arrogant, useless people, taka taka, rubbish. There is nothing you can tell me.”
