KIMC to hold candlelight service for slain Purity Wangechi

Kenya Institute of Mass Communication will today hold a candlelight memorial service for the late Purity Wangechi, who was a student at the institution.

The event will be held at the Maina Campus (Graduation Square) from 2 pm on Thursday 19th May 2022.

Purity was a 1st-year broadcast journalism student killed recently in Kiambu.

The 19-year-old girl was found murdered on Saturday morning by passers by in Kirigiti,Kiambu County.

 The main murder suspect was identified as John Wanyoike Kibungi alias VDJ Flexx. He was Wangechi’s boyfriend.

 His accomplices Kinaiya Kamau and Brendan Muchiri 

According to the DCI, the fourth suspect identified as Isaac Kariuki was arrested at a Nail spa in Thidigua.

“A fourth suspect has been arrested in connection with the grisly murder of Kenya Institute of Mass Communication (KIMC) student Purity Wangechi.

“Isaac Kariuki Kibui, 22, was arrested this morning at Thindigua Delish Nail bar in Kiambu county, as detectives burn the midnight candle to bring all of Purity’s killers to book,” the statement said in part.

It is alleged that the trio murdered Purity after she found out that her boyfriend VDJ Flex was involved in crime.

The 19-year-old was strangled and stabbed before she breathed her last.

In a statement by the DCI Purity had gone to collect her clothes from VDJ Flex’s place.

“Wangechi had fallen in love with the killer and they had been in a relationship for some time before she discovered that he was a thug. She confronted him about it leading to a misunderstanding between the two. She however didn’t know that her lover was determined to cover up his tracks.” The statement read in part

Kenyans are still grappling with the gruesome murder of the Kenya Institute of Mass Communication( KIMC) student Purity Wangechi, whose body was discovered in Kirigiti, Kiambu County.

Many are heartbroken and in pain at a promising life that was unjustly cut short.

Below are some things you didn’t know about her.

She was born on 18/09/2002

Purity died aged 19, she was gruesomely murdered just 4 months before her 20th birthday.
Sadly she won’t be present to eat that cake.

She was studying for a Diploma in Broadcast Journalism

Purity was a student at the Kenya Institute of Mass Communication. According to her TikTok account, she would have probably become a great presenter.


She was stabbed and strangled

The body of Purity was discovered by passersby at Mburiria in Kirigiti, Kiambu County.
It is believed that she was murdered elsewhere and her body was dumped at the scene where it was later discovered.

According to the DCI, the body had visible strangulation and stab marks.


She was dating VDJ Flex
The 19-year-old is believed to have been dating John Wanyoike also known as VDJ Flex.
It is alleged the relationship went sour after the damsel discovered her boyfriend was involved in a crime.


She hailed from Tharaka Nithi

Going by her ID card Purity’s county of residence is Tharaka-Nithi.


She joined KIMC five months ago
When the students went on a long holiday, students are expected to carry all their belongings.
Purity carried all her stuff at the end of March 2022 and took the stuff to her boyfriend’s place in Kirigiti.
She had gone to pick up her stuff when she got killed.

Purity had picked her driving license on the same day she was murdered

Before going to her boyfriend’s place Purity had accompanied her friend to pick up her driving lisense.

VDJ Flex Mfalme has distanced himself from the gruesome murder of Purity Wangechi adding that he just has an almost similar name to the suspect.

This was after he received calls and messages from people inquiring about what happened.

Funny, how names can put one in a weird position. Leo kila mtu amekua anajua tu ni mimi nlifanya that murder but sio mimi ni Vdj Flex mwingine I am VDJ FLEX MFALME there is that #MFALME ndo inanieka tofauti na huyo single Vdj Flex.

The confusion came about because the mastermind in Purity Wangechi’s murder suspect John Wangui goes by the alias VDJ Flex.

VDJ Flex Mfalme distances himself from Purity Wangechi murder

Purity Wangechi’s body which bore visible stab wounds and strangulation marks was found by passersby, with her blood-strained clothes, ID, and student ID at the scene.

The mastermind John Wanyoike Kibungi, 24, was smoked out of his hideout at Kirigiti by DCI cops. Kibungi goes by the alias VDJ Flex.

The two allegedly assisted him in killing the 19-year-old college student and disposing of her body. 

The KIMC student had fallen in love with the killer and they had been in a relationship for some time before she discovered that he was a thug. 

“She confronted him about it leading to a misunderstanding between the two. She didn’t know that her lover was determined to cover his tracks by eliminating her,” the DCI said.

The trio was arrested as they were preparing to escape to their hideout.

“During the early morning raid, the officers also recovered a vegetable knife that was carefully concealed in his waistband and which was used in stabbing the innocent teenage student, whose only mistake was falling in love with a thug,” the DCI added.

The body is currently at City Mortuary, waiting to undergo a post-mortem.

The trio will be appearing before Kiambu court regarding the alleged murder.

19-year-old KIMC student was murdered after discovering BF was a thug

The murder suspect behind the brutal killing of Kenya Institute of Mass Communication (KIMC) student Purity Wangechi, & two of his accomplices has been arrested.

The accomplices were Kanaiya Kamau and Brendan Muchiri, The mastermind John Wanyoike Kibungi, 24, was smoked out of his hideout at Kirigiti in Kiambu County.

The teenager’s body was moved to the City mortuary, pending an autopsy to determine the actual cause of death and provide more clues on the authors of the murder.

Wangechi had fallen in love with the killer and they had been in a relationship for some time before she discovered that he was a thug.

According to the DCI, “She confronted him about it leading to a misunderstanding between the two. She however didn’t know that her lover was determined to cover his tracks by eliminating her.”

“On Friday, Wangeci left the country’s premier media institution to meet him in Kirigiti, to try and rekindle the dying embers of their once blossoming love. She did not know that she was walking into a death trap,” the DCI added in their statement.

Purity Wangechi’s body which bore visible stab wounds and strangulation marks was discovered yesterday morning by the roadside close to Mburiria estate, in Kiambu county.

The scene of the murder was preserved for forensic examination by Crime scene personnel based at the DCI National Forensic Laboratory.

Meanwhile, the three suspects have been placed in custody for the offense of murder contrary to Section 203.

They will appear in a Kiambu court today in connection to the murder.
