Meet The Kenyan Photographer Who Was Chosen To Do Concept Art For Marvel’s Black Panther

Kenya is a hotbed of talent! By now, you know that Oscar award-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o starred in Marvels’ latest big budget film, Black Panther.

The cast of the film has been doing trips around the world promoting the film, with the most recent being a stopover in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Before the original film launch in UK, Marvel Studios reached out to a Kenyan creative to create exclusive concept art.

US media Complex outlet did a feature on Macharia, revealing how the project came about.

‘Prior to the launch of Black Panther in London, Kenyan photographer Osborne Macharia was commissioned by Marvel to create an “exclusive art piece” in conjunction with the film. Macharia created a project titled Ilgelunot, which translated in the Maasai language means “The Chosen One.”‘

The feature also delved into the idea behind the creation:

“The project tells the story of three elders who were saved by T’Chaka during World War II after attempting to seek shelter while venturing across North Africa. The two men and one woman were exposed to Vibranium, which gave them supernatural powers, but left them blind. The elders eventually became the Black Panther’s most trusted advisors.”

Hol’ UP: KOT savagely attack Lupita Nyongo for saying she has never acted with ‘so many black people before’

The first black superhero movie, Black Panther, is setting several box office records this past weekend, after premiering across the world.

The cast has been making several appearances and among them was Lupita Nyongo who was in South Africa for a promo screening. She was joined by her father Kisumu governor Anyang Nyongo, who has written an opinion piece about the movie.

Lupita has revealed in an interview on the New York Times how she has never acted with such a large cast of black actors and actresses.

In the interview she is quoted as saying: “I had never been on a set with so many black people before and we were all so focused and I could feel a vibration in the air.”

She goes on to say, ’I’m even more excited about the celebration of pan-Africanism, because this movie is really about a contemporary Africa relating very intimately with a contemporary America via the characters of Black Panther and Killmonger. We’re talking about some really deep issues that we don’t often voice but we all feel.

“A moment when I really felt a vibration was when we were shooting [the waterfall scene]. There were hundreds of extras and we were all in these traditional clothes and there were all the tribal colors and drumming, and between takes, the drummers started riffing to [Snoop Dogg’s] “Drop It Like It’s Hot.” The whole crowd started to go [sings the melody] and we were all dancing as Ryan figured things out below.”

In that moment, I was like, “This is big.” I had never been on a set with so many black people before and we were all so focused and I could feel a vibration in the air. We all felt so privileged to have an opportunity to be a part of this moment in history.

This interview has not gone down well with Kenyan fans who have taken to twitter to express disappointment with her remarks.

Just read the comments below, and also leave your comments as well. Are KOT justified in attacking her for her remarks?
Rachel “hey auntie” Gichinga‏…Lupita grew up in a majority black country, acting with black casts and performing to black audiences. She did Queen of Katwe, shot in Uganda. There’s so much she could have said to enrich this conversation.

Troy Onyango‏..It’s actually possible that the statement is true. I mean, the production scale alone of Black Panther, I imagine, is bigger than all of Shuga combined. If you count everyone there, you could have more black people than she has, truly, ever worked with.

Desmond Bagaka‏…I think I understand her sentiments. When on set, the whites domineer you so much you feel like an outsider. Queen of Katwe was shot at home, she’s talking about her experiences out there

Noel Amoit‏…She is aiming to be or relate to African Americans now and she needs a moving back story. Kenyans and your Shugas, sorry it never happened

#MuthoniDrummerQueen‏…Yo! I have so many feelings. It makes no sense. Its terrible. It’s such a wasted opportunity.

lupita and black panther crew in seoul

Betty Waitherero..I mentioned once on FB that Lupita doesn’t have a back story so invented one. Si I was lynched. Wololo. But see. I was right. Tea time!

Protas Nyabuti‏..Maybe she was colour blind when she was acting Shuga…

Biko Opondo..Context. It’s rather obvious to have majority black cast in a wholly Kenyan flick like Shuga or a movie with Ugandan setting like Katwe. Both don’t apply to BP’s context or generally her post-Shuga Hollywood experience, hence the statement. My two cents.

Lupita Nyong’o’ wore a tight tangerine dress during Black Panther promo in South Africa

She’s been trotting the globe to promote her new film Black Panther.

And starlet Lupita Nyong’o looked stunning as ever while sporting a skin-tight orange dress on Saturday in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The Mexico-city born actress, 34, struck a pose with her equally lovely co-star Danai Gurira, who donned an off-the-shoulder black and white dress.

Lupita’s stunning Narciso Rodriguez dress fit like a glove, even offering a peek of her taut tummy with a flirt cut-out atop her abs.

The Academy Award winner styled her hair into a short ponytail while masking her eyes with chocolate brown cat-eyed shades.

The Star Wars voice actress smiled as she leaned on co-star Danai, who turned heads in a monochrome Edun frock featuring a leaf design.

Her dress added a splash of color with thin red straps and a matching pair of sculptural heels on foot.

The Walking Dead star’s hair was shaved short with an elegant design on her temple.

She accessorized with white sunglasses and bold gold earrings.

Lupita captioned the photos: ‘Here for the Movie-ment!’ adding the hashtags ‘#BlackPantherShowingOut’ and ‘#WakandaForever.’

Though the film has yet to even finish its opening weekend, the Marvel is already set to shatter box offices record.

FASHION: Lupita Nyong’o among celebrities who wore their best African look to the premier of Black Panther (Photos)

If you weren’t already excited for Black Panther, the latest Marvel film, you’ll be counting down the days until it hits theaters February 16 after taking a look at Monday night’s Los Angeles premiere purple carpet.

The theme of the night was ‘royal attire’ and the many celebrities in attendance looked the part from head to toe.

Stars like Lupita Nyong’o, Yara Shahidi and Janelle Monae celebrated African culture in statement make-up and opulent hair accessories that complemented colorful gowns.

Lupita Nyong’o, who plays the spy Nakia in the film, always serves up head-turning red carpet beauty looks, but this might be one of her most memorable yet.

‘I wanted Lupita’s make-up to feel glamorous and fierce’, said her make-up artist Nick Barose. ‘With a high neckline and a lot of face-framing embellishment, it’s important to draw attention to the eyes and lips.’

The pro achieved this by creating a smudgy black smoky eye using Lancôme Ombre Hypnôse Stylo Longwear Cream Eyeshadow Stick in Onyx and the brand’s Drama Liqui-Pencil Longwear Eyeliner in Noir Intense. On the Lancôme ambassador’s lips, he applied Le Lipstique in Sheer Chocolate, a brown pencil, and Color Design Lipstick in Fashion Foward, a rich matte berry.

Hairstylist Vernon François created a sculptural updo topped with a thin gold headband that pulled the regal look together.

Perhaps the most majestic look of the night was seen on Janelle Monae, who came out to support the film wearing a gold-embellished kufi cap that looked like a literal crown.

As with her tri-tone Christian Siriano gown and jewelry, the singer/actress opted for vibrant make-up with a powerful red lip and bright blue underliner.
