At least eight policemen were injured in Yumbis Fafi sub-county, Garissa County after Al-Shabaab militants ambushed their vehicles. Earlier unconfirmed reports had indicated that at least 20 officers were feared dead.
According to three officers who escaped the ambush Monday night four police vehicles were burnt by the attackers. The police convoy was heading to Yumbis to rescue some of their three colleagues who had been injured in an earlier attack after their vehicle drove over a land mine.
The gunmen ambushed the police convoy and shot at their vehicles before setting them on fire.
These attacks come a day after Kenyan security forces said that 7 Al-Shabaab members were Monday killed during a KDF ambush.KDF spokesman David Obonyo says 2 soldiers were injured during the incident and are being treated at Dhobley.
