Bob Collymore died today. The man was a once in a lifetime leader who made a name for himself in Kenya as the CEO of Safaricom.
One thing that I have seen that has emerged is that he and another industry great, American Steve Jobs had very similar storylines. Why?
Let’s take a look;
1. They both grew up in complicated family upbringings
Steve Jobs was born and put up for adoption by his mother meanwhile Bob was largely raised by his grandmother before later on going to live with his mother.
2. Both were powerful CEO’s of leading industry giants
Steve Jobs was the head of Silicon Valley technology company, Apple meanwhile Bob Collymore was the head of East Africa’s biggest company Safaricom.
3. Both revolutionised their respective companies
Jobs took over a struggling Apple in 1997 and by the time of his death in 2011 had turned it into the most profitable tech company in the world.
Bob took over Safaricom in 2010 from the very successful Michael Joseph. His time at the helm was impressive with him multiplying the Telco’s profits exponentially.
4. The two CEO’s both died after suffering from rare forms of cancer
Jobs died at his Palo Alto, California, home around 3 p.m on October 5, 2011, due to complications from a relapse of his previously treated islet-cell pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor, which resulted in respiratory arrest.
Bob died after a long battle Acute Myeloid Leukaemia.
5. Both died at home with their respective families by their side
The two had tried to fight their respective cancers for some time before they both accepted their fate. They both died with their loving families around them.
