During the morning conversation, Maina and King'ang'i went down memory lane and talked about how the Kenyan high school diet hurt a lot of people.

Maina described the typical Kenyan high school diet as a cup of transparent tea, watery cabbage, uncooked ugali, and weevils or paraffin in Githeri.

Next, he asked his audience to provide details on their school's meal menu and how they felt about it.

"Weevils and Kersone in Githeri, a cup of transparent tea, watery cabbage, and uncooked ugali. What was your school diet like?" Maina asked.

Mwalimu King'ang'i asked Maina whether he had encountered a similar situation when in high school.

"Hamkuwahi ekewa?" King'ang'i asked

Maina made remarks that he had never encountered such a situation and queried whether or not parents ever inquired about their child's diet in school.

"Hapana, when your child is in school do you inquire about the diet?" Maina asked.

According to King'ang'i, people who ask about their children's diet attend schools in Nairobi but schools in the countryside are more akin to the military way of things.

He gave a description of how he used to see the githeri glistening with paraffin but eventually grew accustomed to eating it.

"Za Nairobi eeh, unajua shule za upcounry ni millitary school. Ulikuwa unakula mpaka unazoea , kwanza hio githeri  ya saa saba inameremeta," Mwalimu King'ang'i said.

Maina then asked his audience why they didn't complain about the food having paraffin or weevils.

"Why didn't you complain can you imagine food that you can literally taste the parrafin?" Maina asked.

A caller described how food in government schools was a nightmare because it was often infested with weevils.

In order to survive he came up with a solution of mixing it with avocado to add flavor.

Caller: Food at Govt High School was pathetic, most of the time it used to have full plate weevils, and the remedy was Avocado ndio zipotelee ndani.

Vincent Nguna Our Githeri had the smell of a fuel product ,can't tell whether it was kerosene ....Why did they decide to put that in our food,so unfair.

32Ann Njenga If you never eaten paraffin in Githeri my friend you had a good diet, I just hate whatever we eat back then weeeuh.

Jennifer Kanyiri As a parent if you dare complain about something not going well at school that's the beginning of your child mistreatment and being talked badly by some teachers.
