Burundian-Kenyan singer Kidum, a man of profound experiences, has gleaned invaluable insights from his journey through life.
Remarkably, he encountered the taste of alcohol for the very first time at the age of 40.
In a candid conversation with Dr. Ofweneke on the show "Lessons @30," Kidum revealed that his initiation into the world of alcohol occurred in 2014. "I harbored a deep fear of alcohol," he admitted, "having witnessed its destructive impact on families. I loathed it."
His aversion to alcohol was deeply rooted in the struggles of his father, whose battle with alcoholism resulted in a series of accidents. "He was constantly in and out of hospitals, losing his teeth. This only intensified my disdain for alcohol," he recounted.
When he eventually chose to drink at 40, Kidum felt a sense of control. "I realized it was powerless over me. I can manage it now; I indulge merely for pleasure," he said with newfound assurance.
Kidum's personal life has been marked by two failed marriages, and he is now in his third. He is the proud father of seven biological children.
"Don’t call it a first marriage," he said with a chuckle. "We had children. Look at me— even now, I could still attract women, but I remain devoted to Christina. I became a father while still in school. My eldest son is now 30, and he’s like Schwarzenegger— a true terminator. Kidum, the high priest," he joked with a smile.
Reflecting on his past relationships, Kidum shared, "I met a Congolese woman here while I was a refugee, then another. That's three. Then came a Burundian—it was like a movie, full of drama, you know, those who thrive on it."
He attributes the turbulence in his relationships to the absence of a father figure, though he carries no regrets about his numerous marital experiences.
Adding to his family, Kidum has adopted an eighth child. "I lost my father early, missing out on essential guidance. I was alone in a foreign land. Never deceive people by claiming love if you don’t mean it. If you don’t love, don’t commit," he advised sagely.
