Poor Hygiene Could Lead To Infertility, Claims A Lead Gynaecologist

Did you know that using sanitary towels and tampons for long increases the risk of infertility? Western Kenya lead gynaecologist Aggrey Akula said most women are unaware that having dirty pads could result in infections that may block tubes and lead to barrenness.

Dr Akula said if the pad or tampon is not changed within¬† five hours, fungus may form on the blood, get into the uterus and cause blockage. In an interview with a daily newspaper, he said that using tampons or pads for long causes an infection known as ‘toxic shock syndrome’, which can even cause death.

The condition is caused by the release of poisonous substances from the bacteria staphylocuccus aureus found in the bodies of many women. Another gynecologist and obstetrician said once the blood leaves the body, it gets contaminated with the innate bacteria, and since the pad is still dump, it will attract more organisms. When the bacteria remain in a warm and moist place for long, they multiply and lead to various conditions, including urinary tract infections and even death.

He also said if a tampon is left in the body for long, bacteria could penetrate the body, leading to sever infections and complications. Schoolgirls face a high risk of infections.
