Mugithi maestro John De Mathew was yesterday laid to rest at his Gatanga home in an event attended by politicians, fellow artistes, among others.
The colourful event was more of a celebration with artistes such as Ruth Wamuyu, Hezeh Ndungu, John Njagi, Peter Kigia, Jimmy Wa Yuni (Eunice), JB Maina and Timona Mburu entertaining mourners with performances.
John was praised by his family for being a supportive husband and father throughout the years.
‘I will mourn the loss of my husband, my best friend, my soul-mate, my everything. But, I will find comfort in the knowledge that he loves me to the very end.’ Sarafina his wife said.
His second wife Caroline also paid tribute praising her late husband for being God’s gift to her.
My husband was such a wonderful man. I’m not sure I can really express just how much I will miss him. Not only was he a wonderful husband, but a wonderful father, musician, best friend, colleague …and so much more.
John’s ability to make everyone feel comfortable, secure and loved were his greatest strengths- He was a man of the people. For all the time we have been together, I look back over those joyful moments with so much happiness.
He was my soul mate and my inspiration – my steadfast rock that helped me through thick and thin. John supported and loved us all, and was always there to help navigate through life’s challenges.
Below are photos of the life and time of the late John that prove he was loved by all.
