A female Reddit user named “oopscest” took to the online site to tell the harrowing story of one heck of a family affair. In a post titled “I found out yesterday that my fiancé and I are related. He’s known for a year,” oopscest (who conceals her identity for obvious reasons), opens up about how she stumbled upon a secret her half-brother/fiancé had been sitting on for 12 months.
Oopscest first describes how she met her partner roughly two years ago at a role-play group, and they’ve been dating since. And here’s where we get the first tip-off of what’s to come: while her father was perpetually absent from her life, she notes how her partner’s family had always been very close, and she “always thought they were perfect.” She didn’t realize the man who seemed to be her fiancé’s father was actually his stepfather until she began working on wedding invitations. (And you thought planning your wedding was stressful.)

“While working on wedding invitations – my future MIL [mother-in-law] mentioned that my fiancé’s dad is actually his stepdad. I asked to see a picture of his real dad and I nearly passed out when my MIL showed me a pic of my dad,” oopscest wrote.
At that point, the poor bride-to-be realized she was betrothed to her own half-brother, panicked, vomited, and later confronted him. Surprisingly calm upon receiving the news, he “admitted that he’s known for a year but didn’t want to lose me. Since we always planned to be child-free, he didn’t see the problem with just keeping it from me,” she wrote.
She has been very surprised by the responses of Redditors, with many encouraging her to stay in the relationship. Those taking issue with the relationship did not criticize the incest factor, but the violation of trust in that her fiancé could keep such a tremendous secret from her. Her post received more than 3,400 comments in just nine hours.
However, she remains unsure of how to proceed with her wedding. “I gotta say. The majority of you seem to be totally cool with the idea of brother-sister incest. I know the internet is kind of a depraved place; but I wasn’t expecting that AT ALL,” she wrote. “Unfortunately, I don’t think that same attitude would be mirrored in the offline world. And, even if it was, I’m not sure I can go through life as the girl who married her brother.”
Despite thanking fellow Redditors for their support, oopscest wrote that she is considering deleting her post, and is also considering reaching out to her father and talking to him for the first time in 10 years about this, which I imagine will make for a very interesting conversation.
