Obama Administration Employs First Transgender Woman At White House

President Obama’s administration employed the first transgender woman at the White House. Raffi Freedman-Gurspan was appointed as the outreach and recruitment director for presidential personnel in the white House Office of Presidential Personnel.

Speaking to Huffington Post National Center for Transgender Equality Executive (NCTE) Director Mara Keisling said, “President Obama has long said he wants his Administration to look like the American people. That the first transgender appointee is a transgender woman of color is itself significant.”

Raffi Freedman served as a staff member at the NCTE working as a policy adviser for the organization’s Racial and Economic Justice Initiative.

Raffi Freedman-Gurspan demonstrates the kind of leadership this Administration champions,” Valerie Jarrett, a White House senior adviser, echoed Keisling’s sentiments. “Her commitment to bettering the lives of transgender Americans, particularly transgender people of color and those in poverty, reflects the values of this Administration,” Jarett added.
