Novelist Ngugi wa Thiong’o has been nominated for the 2014 Nobel prize for literature of which is has been named as a one of the favorites and likely to win.
Wa Thiongo is one of East Africa’s leading novelist, whose popular Weep Not, Child was the first major book in English by an East African.
His work includes novels, plays, short stories, and essays, ranging from literary and social criticism to children’s literature. His work has also been used as education material in secondary school set books.
As he became sensitized to the effects of colonialism in Africa, he adopted his traditional name .
Other nominees for the acollade include Haruki Murakami and Svetlana Alexievich. The announcement is set for later on Thursday from the Laureate of the Swedish academy.
