A 36-year-old man was killed after a police officer stabbed him to death over love affairs with a barmaid.
Alphonce Owiti was killed at a bar in Nguku market, Ndhiwa constituency on Monday night.
Owiti who is a contractor, was stabbed by the administration police officer attached to Nguku police post.
Eyewitnesses said the drama began when Owiti found the police officer drinking with a barmaid and talking to her in a manner suggesting that they were an item.
Owiti felt betrayed by the woman and asked why the police officer invaded his love territory.
“They began by insulting each other before it culminated in wrestling where Owiti overpowered the officer. The police officer drew a knife and stabbed him in the stomach when he (police) was lying down,” a witness said.
It forced the barmaid to call locals who were watching the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) match between Kenya and Senegal to quell the tension.
When they arrived they discovered that Owiti was bleeding profusely in the stomach after the police officer had stabbed him.
“Those who rushed to the scene found Owiti complaining that the police officer had stabbed him,” the witness added.
Owiti died on his way to Homa Bay County Referral hospital.
Speaking on Tuesday after the incident, Owiti’s family led by cousin Dan Odhiambo called for an arrest the officer to accord them justice.
“Police officers came to guard civilians but not to kill them. It is wrong for an officer to walk with knife and stab a citizen even if they fought over a woman,” Odhiambo said.
The suspect had not been arrested by mid yesterday.
Homa Bay County Deputy Police Commander Samuel Obara confirmed the incident.
He said a team of investigators have been sent to the area to found out what transpired.
“The matter is under investigations to enable us know what transpired,” Obara said.
He said the team is composed of officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) who will later compile a comprehensive report over the incident.
The body of the deceased was taken to Homa Bay County Referral Hospital mortuary.
