Russian professional tennis player Maria Sharapova has returned to the grass of Wimbledon for the first time since 2015 following her doping ban.
She played against compatriot Vitalia Diatchenko on Court Two on Tuesday afternoon.Sharapova lost to Diatchenko 6-7 7-6 6-4.
Sharapova had not played a match on grass since losing to Serena Williams in the Wimbledon semi-finals in 2015 following her doping ban and injury last summer.
Sharapova, who won Wimbledon 14 years ago, has missed the last two years at Wimbledon;the 2016 tournament due to 15 month suspension after testing positive for banned drug meldonium and in 2017 because of an injured left thigh.
According to Daily Mail, ‘She overcame gusting winds and a tumble on Court One’s manicured lawn to outclass tricky opponent Arantxa Rus 7-5 6-3 in the first round on Monday.
But former world number one Mats Wilander believes Sharapova is close to playing her best tennis and could win her second Wimbledon title this year.’
