Mama Sarah en route to Nairobi to meet grandson

Mama Sarah has departed for Nairobi to meet her step-grandson, US President Barack Obama, who will arrive on Friday night. Sarah, who said the US Embassy rescheduled her flight from Thursday, is expected to arrive with Siaya Governor Cornel Rasanga.

She spoke when she joined Rasanga in launching a county tourism and culture expo on Wednesday. The expo, and several other events, have been aligned with Obama’s three-day visit, during which he will not go to Nyang’oma Kogelo village.

The White house said Obama will spend private time in Nairobi with family members but will not travel to the village that is most closely associated with the family name. Obama, who became the first black US president, is the son of a black father from Kenya and a white mother from Kansas.

The US president is visiting with a mission to strengthen US security and economic ties, but his personal connection to his father’s birthplace will dominate a trip viewed as a native son’s return to his home. He will hold bilateral talks and dine with President Uhuru Kenyatta, and co-host the 6th Global Entrepreneurship Summit.

He will also give public addresses at Kenyatta University and Safaricom Stadium Kasarani. Obama departed for Kenya on Thursday, his first trip to his father’s homeland as US president, kicking off a swing through Africa that includes a stop in Ethiopia.

He boarded Air Force One from Joint Base Andrews, Maryland and made a stop over at Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany.
