Najib Balala, Lupita Nyong’o and Naomi Campbell have been on many Kenyans lips the past few weeks. The reason for that? The announcement that Naomi had been named as Magical Kenya’s international ambassador.
Many asked the ministry of Tourism headed by Najib Balala why they had decided to use the British model while Kenyan export Lupita Nyong’o was someone they could reliably use?
Najib answered that Lupita had been unavailable with Balala claiming that his ministry had unsuccessfully tried to get in touch with Lupita Nyong’o for five years now before opting for the British supermodel.
“I know everybody is asking why not Lupita. Lupita has commitments and her managers cannot allow us to access her. We’ve spent the last five years looking for Lupita,” Mr. Balala said.
But in a quick rejoinder, Lupita retorted sarcastically on her Twitter page, writing;
“Me when I hear the Kenyan Ministry of Tourism has been looking for me for fives years. #Imrightherebaby #alternativefacts #NikoWakanda.”

Two different stories. Who is telling the truth? I believe then it is somewhere in the middle. I believe that the Tourism ministry did try to contact Lupita after her famous Oscar win but were most likely unsuccessful in getting a response from her.
And who can blame the actress? The offers she was probably inundated with after the win (and her subsequent fame) didn’t allow for most people who wanted access to her to get it.
A good manager is normally a gatekeeper for their client and is the one who analyses what offers their busy client should see. In this case, I think that her managers might not have apprised/given her the offer from the Tourism ministry.
For Lupita’s manager’s the priority list for her at the time would most likely have been great movie roles to capitalise on her win. So any other offers (like the Tourism ministry offer) would be rejected or not even considered by her managers.
So it is possible that what Balala and Lupita are saying is true. One offered and the other most likely didn’t know an offer had been made.
But that is my opinion. Who do you believe?
