Homemade Chapatis are the best, especially this festive season where people are spending time with family and friends.

Chapati is a dish that completes any Kenyan celebration and below is a simple way to make the perfect homemade Chapati.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 and 1/2 cup of water
  • 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Instructions:

  1. Mix Dry Ingredients:

    • In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour and salt.
  2. Add the vegetable

    • Make a well in the center of the flour mixture and pour in the vegetable oil
  3. Gradually Add Water:

    • Slowly add water to the flour mixture while mixing with your hands. Knead the dough until it comes together. The amount of water may vary, so add it gradually until you get a soft and pliable dough.
  4. Knead the Dough:

    • Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic-like.
  5. Divide into Balls:

    • Divide the dough into golf ball-sized portions.
  6. Roll Out the Chapati:

    • Take one dough ball, flatten it with your hands, and then roll it out into a thin, round disc using a rolling pin. Use additional flour to prevent sticking.
  7. Cook on a pan

    • Heat a pan over medium-high heat.
    • Place the rolled-out chapati on the hot pan.
    • Add preferred amount of vegetable oil
    • Cook for about 1-2 minutes until bubbles start to form on the surface.
  8. Flip and Cook:

    • Flip the chapati and cook the other side until it puffs up and gets brown spots.

      Repeat:

      • Repeat the process with the remaining dough balls.
      • Serve:
        • Serve the chapati warm with your favorite beef stew, chicken stew, Ndengu or preferred curry.
