A Missionary school in the United States in the state of Kansas has been forced to close completely following the controversy of supporting the LGBTQ, contrary to the Bible.
Urban Christian Academy is a private, K-8 school with an enrollment of 100 students that describes itself as providing "a tuition-free, high-quality, Christ-centered education for low-income students." – ABC reported.
The school's mission statement has always emphasized inclusion in general terms, noting that following Jesus "opens doors and offers a place at the table."
But last year it added a paragraph to its website, which read in part, "We are an affirming school. We stand with the LGBTQIA+ community and believe in their sanctity.
We celebrate the diversity of God's creation in all its diverse and beautiful forms." According to the school, the update caused donors to stop donating, many of them citing their interpretation of Christianity as the reason.
Now, UCA has announced that it will be closing at the end of the school year due to the loss of financial aid.
According to ABC, Kalie Callaway-George, executive director and co-founder of UCA, said this new language "is kind of what started the backlash from our donors, which we expected.
It's just that we expected a 50% loss of funding and made adjustments We had an 80% loss of funding and that was too much to overcome."
Large donations came quickly. Soon after the new language appeared on the school's website, eight churches dropped their support.
Although these foundations were responsible for only 2% of the school's funding, church members were the main donor base that provided much more.
