Driver arrested after viral video of him assaulting cop

Nairobi's head of traffic, Vitalis Otieno, stated that the suspect will face multiple charges, including attempted murder.

A driver has been arrested after a viral video landed him in trouble. He was seen assaulting a police officer on Sunday morning along Kamiti Road at Mirema Junction.

Njoroge was flushed out of a house in Jacaranda Estate. Apparently, he was reportedly looking for help to move from his house after he discovered he was wanted.

Nairobi's head of traffic, Vitalis Otieno, stated that the suspect will face multiple charges, including attempted murder.

The incident started when the police officer, Corporal Jacob Ogendo, was on duty managing traffic at Mirema Junction.

The officer spotted a motor vehicle that was making a U-turn on the road, causing obstruction to other road users and decided to take action.

He approached the said motor vehicle but it suddenly hit the road kerb and got stuck. In the process, the officer managed to enter the vehicle on the front passenger's seat and instruct the driver to drive to the police station.

As they reached around Quick Mart Roysambu, the driver unexpectedly stopped and drew a sword from under the seat.

For his own safety, Corporal Ogendo jumped out of the vehicle for his own safety, and the driver followed him with blows and kicks.

He fell into the trench, and in the process, the driver took his police pocket phone battery and left with it.

The officer was rescued by members of the public and later sought first aid at Crestview Mother and Child Wellness Centre Kasarani and was referred to Mama Lucy for further treatment.

"Ilikua ni hasira kidogo tu. Leo ndio ilikua mara ya kwanza kupiga polisi," Ian Njoroge, youth who assaulted a traffic cop on Sunday says, as police engage him in a 'small talk'.
