Eric Omondi comes to the rescue of mothers affected by recent govt demolition in Mukuru kwa Ruben

Kenyan comedian turned activist Eric Omondi has come to the rescue of Mukuru Kwa Ruben residents who have been affected by recent demolitions.

In a video, shared online, Omondi was able to pay three-month rent for at least 10 victims plus buying the household items after they lost everything in the demolitions.

Through his “Sisi Kwa Sisi” initiative, Omondi was able to raise sh237K –the money he used to help the victims.

We picked 10 of the MOST AFFECTED FAMILIES in Mukuru kwa Ruben who was Homeless after the Demolitions and Paid Three Months Rent for Each, Two Months House Shopping, and Gave Each Money to Start a Small Business. GOD WINS!!! GOD BLESS EVERYONE WHO SENT ANYTHING,” Eric Omondi shared. 

The families were left homeless after the government demolished their houses under a directive given by CS Kithure Kindiki.

“These helpless Kenyans do not deserve this CRUELTY!!! Their Houses were Demolished yesterday and they were left in the Rain, Darkness, and Cold with Children. We have Chosen these Four Families who Spent the night out in the Cold with Children in Mukuru Kwa Ruben. We are Going to Move them into new Houses and Pay Six Months Rent for each as they collect their lives together...All their belongings were destroyed in the Demolitions. Interior CS Kithure Kindiki  ordered demolitions of structures and buildings illegally constructed near Nairobi rivers.

The directive affects all those living within 30 metres of Ngong, Mathare and Nairobi rivers.

The CS said the order extends to all Kenyans living within 30 metres of riparian land in rivers and other water bodies across the country.

On Thursday, Kindiki directed the Nairobi Regional and County Security Teams to work with the Nairobi City County Government and the National Disaster Operation Centre (NDOC) to ensure immediate vacation of people living along the rivers.

"The Nairobi Regional and County Security teams are directed to work with the Nairobi City County Government and the multiagency team under the auspices of the National Disaster Operation Centre (NDOC) to ensure the immediate vacation or mandatory evacuation of all persons within the 30-metre riparian land along the Nairobi Rivers (Mathare, Ngong and Nairobi Rivers), and thereafter oversee the removal of all buildings and structures within the riparian land as well as the planning corridor," Kindiki said.

Following the order, bulldozers prevailed upon buildings and structures Friday morning and flattened everything on site within the marked riparian areas.

This followed the lapse of a 24-hour altimatum for owners and residents to move to safer places.
