President William Ruto last weekend left congregants of the ACK church in Nyeri in stitches after mentioning the gift he would buy for a retiring bishop.

Ruto was among the hundreds of ACK faithful who thronged St. Peter's Cathedral in Nyeri for a celebration honoring Bishop Joseph Kagunda, who is retiring.

Kagunda has served as the ACK bishop for the Western Mount Kenya region for 20 years and was celebrated as he prepared to hand over the church's responsibilities to a new leadership, which has been the subject of much controversy.

During his speech, President Ruto joked that he had planned to buy Kagunda a car as a retirement gift but upon learning that the congregation had already fulfilled that, he said he changed his mind and decided to buy him a wheelbarrow instead.

"Thank you very much to my friend Bishop Kagunda. I was thinking of buying him a car, but you have done a great job buying him one. Now, the task remaining is for me to buy him a wheelbarrow," Ruto said as the congregants laughed, prompting him to laugh as well.

The head of state continued to tell the bishop that he should visit him next week, jokingly adding that by then he should have prepared himself well for his wheelbarrow gift.

Here is the video of President Ruto making that promise.
