Nollywood actor Junior Pope has hit headlines since Wednesday evening when news of his drowning in the River Niger reached the public. 

Nigerian media pundits report that the talented actor was taken to the mortuary after being rescued by divers.

The mortician at the mortuary is reported to have confirmed that the actor was still alive and directed he be taken to the hospital. 

At the time, the National President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Emeka Rollas confirmed to the public that the actor was alive.

"What God cannot do does not exist. Junior Pope is alive. He is taking treatment in the hospital," wrote Rollas

On Thursday morning, Rollas announced that the actor had died while receiving treatment.

 “It is so so sad that our joy was shortlived. My first post was out of excitement when we noticed his tingling fingers. Two notable hospitals tried their best to revive him but to no avail," he wrote

Adding “God knows the best. We finally lost him."

His real name is Pope Obumneme Odonwodo,

He was born in Bamenda, Cameroon, on May 7th, 1984 and later moved to Nigeria while he was still young. 

He made his acting debut in 2006

He and three others succumbed as a result of drowning at Anam River while returning from a film shoot via boat

Hours before the accident, he shared a video asking the captain to slow down as he is the only son and has kids who depend on him. 

He was shooting a movie titled 'The Other Side Of Life'

He is survived by his wife Jeniffer Awele and three sons.

He died aged 39.
