A viral social media video has stirred concern among Nigerians, revealing the deteriorating health of Nollywood comedy legend Amaechi Muonagor and his desperate plea for financial assistance.

Displayed lying in bed with a bandage wrapped around his chest, Muonagor struggles to articulate his words, illustrating the gravity of his condition.

Beside him, another actor elucidates Muonagor's urgent need for funds to undergo a kidney transplant, underscoring the dire circumstances.

This revelation compounds the recent grief felt by Nigerians following the passing of Nollywood luminary John Okafor, popularly known as Mr Ibu, who also grappled with health issues.

In the distressing footage unveiled on Monday, Muonagor, with evident anguish, addresses his Igbo community: "Igbo people, I greet you all," before his voice trails off.

Taking over, actor Kingsley Orji elucidates the veteran performer's battle with kidney-related ailments.

"He has been enduring this ordeal for months. The need for a kidney transplant is pressing," Orji discloses. "Just a few days ago, he was discharged from the ICU after a stint of treatment. However, his recovery has been slow.

Financial constraints compelled us to bring him home, though it's far from ideal. His ability to communicate has been severely hindered. We implore for your assistance."

The emotional response to the video has been palpable, with an outpouring of sympathy and pledges of financial support for the ailing actor.

Muonagor's health crisis, coupled with Mr Ibu's recent demise, underscores the pervasive healthcare challenges confronting Nollywood actors.

Remunerated on a per-project basis, many lack access to health insurance or the means to make regular medical payments. While efforts by the Actors Guild of Nigeria to secure industry-wide coverage have seen some progress, not all performers are enrolled.

Throughout his illustrious career, Muonagor has graced numerous films, notably portraying the father figure in "Aki and Paw Paw," a role that resonated widely with audiences.

Despite the burgeoning competition from international film industries, Nollywood endures as a cultural cornerstone, captivating audiences across Nigeria and beyond.
