Former Nairobi County Governor, Mike Mbuvi Sonko, has volunteered to assist a 22-year-old woman claiming to have a child with the late athlete Kelvin Kiptum in her fight for justice.

In his statement on Friday, the controversial politician revealed his intention to attend Kiptum's funeral to advocate for Ms. Edna Awour. However, his flight was delayed.

He emphasized that Edna's child, whom she claims is Kiptum's, should also benefit from government support, similar to other children of the late athlete.

"My concern was to advocate for the rights of this child, and for Edna to get justice, just the way I fought for justice for the late Kibra MP Ken Okoth's son, who received all the benefits from Parliament and insurance," Sonko said via his Twitter account.

Edna's child should also be a beneficiary of the money and the house the government provides.

Considering my previous advocacy for the late Kibra MP Ken Okoth's widow, who underwent a DNA test and was later recognized by the family along with her child, I am also committed to advocating for the rights and recognition of the child of our hero, Kelvin Kiptum," he added.

"I personally will fund and support the necessary legal processes to ensure that the child gets the justice and recognition they deserve from the athlete's family.

The rights and dignity of everyone must be upheld, and I am committed to seeing that principle implemented in this case," Sonko stated.

The former governor claims that he had planned to advocate for Edna's child's rights at Kiptum's funeral if he had succeeded in attending the event.

Along with his statement, he posted pictures showing the late Kiptum with Edna and their child, suggesting that she has a legitimate claim for support.

Earlier this week, the High Court in Eldoret rejected a bid to stop Kelvin Kiptum's burial following claims by Edna Awour that she has a child with the late athlete.

Edna asserted that they have a 1-year and 7-month-old child, and their rights could be violated if the burial proceeded without addressing the matter.
