Member of Parliament for Kikuyu and Majority Leader in the National Assembly, Kimani Ichung'wah, has urged President William Ruto to make changes in the gubernatorial positions.

Addressing a crowd on Tuesday, January 23, 2024, Ichung'wah proposed that the position of the county governor should be reserved for women only.

According to Ichung'wah, implementing this proposal would benefit the counties because female governors perform better than their male counterparts.

"If the day comes, you can amend the constitution, I suggest you change the governorship position to be reserved for these women because they understand the governor's job better," he said.

In a recent survey, female governors were listed among the top-performing governors in the country.

According to a November last year Infotrak survey, female governors like Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga topped the list of the 25 best-performing governors with a 70% approval rating.

Other governors like Kawira Mwangaza (Meru) ranked eighth with 63%. On the contrary, Cecily Mbarire (Embu) was listed 11th with a 62% approval rating, Wavinya Ndeti (Machakos) ranked 13th with 61%, while Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru emerged 17th on the list with a 59% approval rating.

The survey was conducted in two phases between July and September 2023. During the first phase, 36,200 participants were involved, and the second phase involved 22,500 participants.

"The second survey involving 22,500 participants was conducted to increase the sample size so that each sub-county has at least 200 interviewees," the survey said.
